5.0 out of 5 stars DVD review, Oct 13 2000
This review is from: The Private Eyes (1981) (DVD)
Just finished watching the DVD and am pleased. Still a great flick even better on DVD!! The picture is great as are the extras. I did have a problem with the audio. Throughout the entire movie, there is a high pitched frequency interference that 'pops' in and out periodically. I'm wondering if this is a bad disc or just a poor source transfer. Future posters please comment. Thanks!!

Great movie that still holds up today. Chevy Chase and Anthony Michael Hall make the film with superb performances. As far as the DVD, don't buy this thinking you are 'upgrading' your collection to DVD because the quality is just not there. The disc picture quality is NO better than the VHS and is still pan-n-scan. I did a side by side and I think I almost prefer the VHS picture over the DVD, seems to be clearer. The sound is in MONO, which really takes away from the viewing enjoyment. The only reason to upgrade to DVD on thid one would be for the theatrical trailer or convience of chapter search. There also are a few cast bios but nothing more. I'm almost positive that Criterion or someone will re-release this as a special edition SOMEDAY, as this is a really disgraceful handling of an American Treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harryhausen's finest work!!, Sep 25 2000
Just finished watching this box set. It has a very clear picture with good two channel sound. Great to see these films looking so clean. It did seem to display a greater contrast between the dynamation and the real actors on DVD as opposed to VHS but overall wothr the upgrade to DVD!! It don't get any better than Harryhausen!!!

A most excellent transfer! Colors and detail are crisp and clear, sound is magnificent. Funny how some old movies look great on DVD and some newer movies don't. Don't miss this one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great performances but falters near the end....., Sep 19 2000
This review is from: Tombstone (DVD)
Great performances, especially Kilmer, why Paxton was cast I'll never know. Good movie until near the end. Russell walks out to the center of the creek and just stands there without getting hit in the middle of a major gun battle?!?!? And Doc is too sick to get out of bed but then gets up and rides 4 miles to 'finish' the job?!?! Why montage a bunch of brief action clips together? If you took the time to film them, show it!! It just gave me the feeling that they were rushed into wrapping up production or the director disappeared from the set or something. Overall, some GREAT lines , an authentic look, and great performances even if the script is weak towards the end. A great effort for the western genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ferris on DVD...., Sep 8 2000
Of course this is a great film, so I will comment on the DVD. The picture is very good compared to others I've seen from this timeframe. It is made for widescreen!! Sound is great and the commentary by John Hughes is very enlightening(I wish he'd done one for Breakfast Club!!). Interesting to hear how much character development he planned for and you get secret info, like the fact that all the leaves on the trees outside the glass garage at Camerons towards the end of the movie had to be painted green as it was summer when they took the car and was into fall when they filmed the car busting thru the glass. Overall a great buy, don't hesitate to upgrade to DVD on this one!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chevy Chase in his Prime!!!, Sep 5 2000
This review is from: Spies Like Us (DVD)
I just picked up the DVD of this flick as I had seen it years ago in the theatre and remember it being funny. Well, it still is. I laughed out loud the whole movie. This is Chevy Chase in his prime!! Reminds me of his perfection in the first Vacation movie. As for DVD quality, I was quite pleased with the picture after reading alot of negative reviews on the quality. It was everything I expected from a 1985 movie of this caliber. Clear and bright colors with an occasional artifact from a lousy transfer print. The audio was a different story. It is just 2 channel which is ok on a $9.99 disc, but there was an annoying hissing sound through most of the movie. After fifteen minutes I started playing with the options on my stereo and got rid of it on the 'Cinema C' setting. Yes, it is pan-n- scan and the scene selection menu is nothing but the Warner Bros Logo(can't beleive they couldn't even load the picture that was on the case!?!?)and there is not even a trailer, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. The colors are brighter than the VHS and if you have a decent sound system, you can dispell the hissing sound(or just pretend you're watching it in the forest with the wind blowing thru the pine trees!!) Still a VERY funny movie. I would say the scene with Chevy taking the 'Spy Exam' alone is worth the price of this disc!! Get it already!!!!!

I just picked this up on DVD and what new life this transfer breathes into a comedy classic! Great picture and colors complimented by a GREAT sounding score by the all time great Elmer Bernstein make for lots-o- repeated viewings. My 9 year old watched this for the first time Friday and watched it again 3 more times that same weekend. Still funny after all these years!

1.0 out of 5 stars "I pity the fool..." that thinks this is funny!, Aug 25 2000
What a let down. Even my 8 year old said it's not funny. Good news, though, is that I heard that Disney is planning a new Pee Wee movie that charts the life of Pee Wee Herman from his childhood to adulthood(? ), if you can call it that. With good direction, it might turn out. Nevertheless, Paul Ruebens has created a classic character who will live forever in 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure'!

A beautiful transfer with sharp detail and great color. Film is an overlooked 70's classic and it is good to see it get the transfer it deserved. Kelly's Heroes got a equally great transfer too. Widescreen, baby!
