a great relief after pilgrim (the nadir of his career)
Nice acoustic picking, nice song selection and great backing vocals. However, it's AOR or MOR or pop, it you want to be nice to the guy. It's not the Claptom we know and love (and loved as recently as From the cradle)

Together with Let it bleed one of the most varied RS albums. Buy it today and enjoy. What actually stands out is the production: in the 70's they often soudend somewhat muddy on studio albums (except for acoustic ballads like Angie) but here they sound crisp and clean. Great!

4.0 out of 5 stars weird, June 14 2003
In a way, the dead's Trout Mask Replica.
Do not listen to this on headphones without parental guidance. It is weird, trippy, scary in places and sometimes appears to be an artistic statement just for the heck of it, i.e. Look! We can do crazy things like this!
A period piece in a way, I guess...

well played, especially considering their abstinence from playing for nearly two years (as the grateful dead, that is).
Especially organised to promote Blues for alla, their first record on their own label. An invited audience fails to go crazy, luckily the band does wit hone of the few live performances of the title track, and the only one officially released. Crazy fingers is very good as well

The studio record that turned them into a stadium live act, grossing an enormous amount of money by playing very large venues for their last 8 years.
Although quite good produced, well recorded and performed, still more strile and flat than their live records. Were they insecure in the studio or what? Most songs sound better in live versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars mellow dead, June 14 2003

somewhat comatose in places but overall nice to contrast with thundering, dynamic 1977/78 approach.
Early version of waal of sound makes for great sound quality, but I agree that the mix could have been better (well, it couldn't be repaired, otherwise they would have released it).
Nice, but not the best of 1973, get 19 or 28 first

3.0 out of 5 stars live american dead beauty, June 14 2003
nice songs, nice performances, fun bonus tracks and gret sound quality.
At this point in time GD seemed to break big.
However, this one is not particularly representative of their concerts of the period.
Also, this album has been made more or less redundant by Ladies and Gentlemen, a perfect quadruple from april 1971 concerts at the fillmore that includes some songs in oher versions from the same sessions at the fillmore in april 71.

You don't have to like the Dead to like this (it may help) but this just has got to be one of the best tributes of the 90's!
Nice selection of songs, nice selection of artists, great performances, funny liner notes and a worthy cause.
Highlight: unique Ripple by Jane's addiction

4.0 out of 5 stars somewhat deadified, but not enough, June 14 2003
I like Dylan and the Grateful Dead; I own around 100 cd's by these tw artists, most of the Dead's being doubles, triples or quadruples.
They are natural (or cultural) partners and indeed, I like Dylan and the Dead more than this.
I think the Dead is somewhat handicapped when they play covers that are basically very good songs, but do not create good improvising possibilities. They play them in their usual ramshackle way, somewhat funky, somewhat jazzy. They may make them a little their own in this way, but for me it doesn't work. A dissapointment.

3.0 out of 5 stars ambition, June 14 2003
This review is from: Live Phish 13 (Audio CD)
The white album (minus Goodnight) is well played, but ultimately has mostly rarity value. Who would prefer it over the original?
On the other hand, ambition has got to be admired; they pull it of nicely, with some ferocious solos thrown in from Trey.
However, Reba, Golgi, Divided sky and Sleeping monkey work very well for me...
