4.0 out of 5 stars surprise, Dec 18 2003
I don't particularly like Ringo's voice. His drumming, although fully competent, does not really impresse me that much. His songwriting has been laughable to mediocre in the past: the curiosities, usually providing hardly needed relief from excellent pop songs written by other Beatles.
However he is a great guy to hang out with, as is evidenced by his excellent All Starr Band compilation from a few years back. He helped the Beatles stay together, and he can get some famous friends to join him on stage and play classic rock songs.
No, this is not a masterpiece like Forever changes / Pet sounds / White album or, more recently, OK computer / Yankee Hotel Foxtrot / Sound of lies. It's however a very well crafted collection of songs, well played, a joy to hear.
He has assembled a good party band for the nostalgically-inclined, he has a co-writing credit in all the songs and does not sound exhausted in the least. From a songwriting standpoint this is better than Driving Rain, and as far as the number of different moods on one cd are concerned, it's more varied than Brainwashed.
Try this!

3.0 out of 5 stars UNOBNOXIOUS..., June 25 2003
This review is from: Bryter Layter (Audio CD)
This is so totaly relaxing that it takes actually a few listens to notice a few annoying things:
- Nick can only sing in one voice
- Nick can only write lyrics that convey one kind of feeling
- Nick can only play the guitar in one particular way, and in one (quite particular) tuning
He has basically one style. I you like smooth, romantic but somewhat sad music, as I do once a year, this is a rewarding listen

The title of the cd says it all. This is where they came from , although the jugband roots are hardly present here.

I do not care a lot for the studio albums Shakedown st and Go to heaven, but this very well done. From the same time I much prefer Dicks Picks 5, with the best uncle john's band EVERT, but it is very well played, more energetic than I expected

5.0 out of 5 stars The best for a long time, but not anymore, June 14 2003
Blues, country, trippy spychedelic jamming, pop; it does not get better than this easily, and it took the Dead decades to produce a better release (although, since I refer to archive releases, they actually date from the same time for some part).

Although somewhat overrated in my opinion (Live in Leeds it's not), it's one of the best live RS records available, in my top three with Love you Live and Stripped.

5.0 out of 5 stars expensive but very good, June 14 2003
Comprehensive, so bound to include non favorite songs or periods here, BUT!
- A great overview over time
- it shows what the dead were good at: improvising, improving / recreating the song in a live context
- Some classic versions (other one, Shakedown street, Watkins Glen, Scarlet, So many roads)
- I even like most of the studio try-outs on the last disc
- You gotta love Whiskey in the jar. They were friends up to the end

DP's from this era tend to dissappoint me (same with DP 9)
Vault releases like Dozin' and Nightfall seem to work better for me.
On this cd, we find a great Eyes, a fun that would be something and generally the two keyboard attack is effectively used (Vince is somewhat high in the mix)
