Gentlemen and Players
Gentlemen and Players
by Joanne Harris
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars the darkness of schooldays personified., April 10 2006
This review is from: Gentlemen and Players (Hardcover)
i have just finished this, my first joanne harris book!
(i'm still on "coastliners")
really impressed! hugely entertaining, keeps you guessing, it has a wry humour (mostly from mr straitley "sir") & does a great "gotcha!"
it also evokes that school feeling, the smells, the attitudes, the atmosphere & the schoolboy attitudes.
it has some sad & tragic moments but doesn't waste too much time in sentiment, or nostalgia, in getting to its conclusion.
this was an excellent, witty & cleverly written story,
my only gripe really being that pinchbecks attitudes towards st ossies is really a commonplace problem whatever your particular stance may be within society, but it was wickedly portrayed here.
& has made me a fan of ms harris!

5.0 out of 5 stars what immortal can resist.........?, April 4 2006
This review is from: Thriller (Audio CD)
thriller, off the wall pt 2....
brilliant funky songs, the title track is my absolute fave MJ (& halloween) song, partly for mr price's end rap & wicked howl........
"billie jean" totally infectious, wicked beat, never really undrstood what it was about, but it was a blowaway song (& video)....
"PYT" another excellent tune, & "human nature" just beautiful.
the Michael of this time is sorely missed..........

the songs on this album, together with "thriller" hit me right there, everytime i hear "don't stop" or "rock with you" & the title track..... this was michael at his absolute peak, basically, he WAS dance music in the '80s......
totally brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars hits the spot!, April 1 2006
This review is from: Never for Ever (Audio CD)
one of my fave kate albums, there's echoes of the mad geniuus within her work, which doesn't always seem to work advantageously. my fave songs are "babooshka" as i think this is such an imaginative & creative song, another fave is "egypt" but all the tracks pretty much flow together collectively so is hard to differentiate individually, also "the wedding list" is excellent, tho at times her shrieking vocals can be a little offputting, & finally:
"army dreamers" and "breathing" are two of the most amazing & beautiful songs ever, along with "experiment IV" almost protest songs that hit the spot, some of kate's best songs.

my fave kate album, the songs have a haunting, ethereal feel,
i especially like the one dedicated to her dad, & also "love & anger", "never be mine", "this woman's work" totally mesmerising, but gloomyish, "rocket's tail" is totally wicked & far out, & the roundup track "walk straight down the middle" is totally gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars heartwarming......., March 31 2006
this, as fannie's other books, reminds me kinda of the english "miss read" stories, only set in US deep south, this, as her other stories, centres on a local tightnit community, and is funny, touching, warm, witty, humane & is about a welcome reminder of those traditional "downhome" values so rare in the current world.
i love this & her other books, "fried green tomatoes" & "welcome to the world, baby girl!"
also, fannie was originally in the movie "grease" & either she influenced the movie or the movie influenced her, as i find echoes of the "grease" persona within her stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars call the tune.........., March 30 2006

this is one of my biggest memories from my teens, on the strength of punk, they made this film outlining the pressures of being a rock star & media fodder, the highs & lows,
& i think it's time this film had a resurrection, as it's subject content is as significant today as was then,
the songs here also have some great political content, part of the anarchy invasion of the late '70s, & perhaps that has something to do with why this has been shadowed since it's heyday, i would love to hear all these songs again, hazel had a unique vocal style & i'm surprised that we have not heard more from her over the years, i bought the single "will you" & was one of my fave love songs from my teens, along with the pretenders "i go to sleep" & still love these songs, perhaps more today than then.

this is one of my fave bernard sumner (in one guise) collections, i picked it up as i couldn't get "until the end of time" out of my brain, & having done so, remembered how much i enjoyed the other songs, "forbidden city" & "second nature" being two of my faves, luverly stuf!

a rare uk single release, so i bought this single,
tho it is on the "street angel" collection, the "b" side is not - "inspiration" is a nice little tune, quite poetic & simplistic, on a par with "love's a hard game to play" -
back to the "a" side - i really like this song, is really pretty, has a bit of a country vibe to it, & a catchy beat, nice, mellow, upbeat tune.
