4.0 out of 5 stars who could ask for more?, March 23 2006
This review is from: Enjoy The Silence (Audio CD)
one of my fave songs ever,
it has incredible atmosphere
& the lyrics have a wonder sensitivity, speaking of someone who just wants the truth, the real, & peace & contentment........
also, the goldfraff mix of "halo" from the "gone pete tong" movie, is a culmination of two top creative musical minds.
great stuff!

2.0 out of 5 stars when's someone gonna release a REAL one?, March 18 2006
This review is from: Women & Songs the '80s (Audio CD)
the '80s were in my opinion, the biggest centrepoint for music,
there was such a culmination of styles, old and new, hip-hop & techno were born, as well as the evolution of rock & roll, combined with punk, new romantic, reggae, ska, soul, disco, you name it!
so therefore, i feel this decade warrants something a bit special in terms of a compilation. for me, my list of faves from this era is almost infinite, i loved the '80s, the fashions, the music, the way the world was before this so-called "revolution" -
it felt like a time of anticipation, a promise of things to come, before someone killed the dream! - & therefore deserves to be honored, fittingly!

4.0 out of 5 stars a treasured collection., March 18 2006
i bought this in times square, whilst holidaying in new york:
i've always loved steve's voice, as is so warm, emotional, & quite sexy too!
my fave song of his is "go away" as his vocals soar high & low, & is a touching love song.
here, i also love, "when you're in love" 'specially the steel drum beats & also "once in a lifetime" for it's whirling musical sound, which aptly describes the emotional theme of the song.
i also really like "summer of love" as is a nice feel-good tune.
"melody" is a beautiful piano song with gorgeous harmonies, "i stand alone" from camelot is a really nice song, very humane.
i love the other inclusions from "street talk" & the beautiful "missing you" is perhaps the best song from "strange medicine".

The Astrology Kit: Everything You Need to Cast Horoscopes for Yourself, Your Family and Friends
The Astrology Kit: Everything You Need to Cast Horoscopes for Yourself, Your Family and Friends
by Grant Lewi
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars whoooooooooooo! - spooky!, March 17 2006
this kit is fun to use,
i hate to say this, maybe it is just really cleverly done, or it's fluke, but i casted a variety of charts for friends and family, & there was some spookily accurate descriptives in the conclusions.
it is not suitable for a party piece, as requires quite a bit of plotting & mundane note taking & page turning, not to mention long-winded interpretations, but for all that,
i enjoy using this as a basic character study guide if i want to basically try to suss someone out in a hurry!

CHARLOTTE GRAY
CHARLOTTE GRAY

4.0 out of 5 stars loss & love...........?, March 14 2006
This review is from: CHARLOTTE GRAY (Paperback)
i have just read this book, it was described as "harrowing" but this was not exactly my experience.
it kind of took you along on charlotte's adventure, amidst war-torn france, right into the heart of the resistence.
it was essentially i think, a love story, leading throughout to her reunion with gregory, i however felt that the bitter-sweetness of the outcome was not conveyed as well as i felt, & whether intentional or not, i couldn't help finding these 2 characters to be selfish & insensitive in their celebrations, in light of the experiences & situations that they had been transported from. however, not being a party to this kind of reality myself, perhaps i am ill-equipped to judge this, maybe you do get a euphoric relief after such an escape.
i felt myself feeling a depth of sadness & pity for the children, as well as all the other people that were "lost".
must also add that i loved the description of daisy's personality - whatever happened to such characters? they were once rife but sadly you never hear people speaking like that in this day & age, a sad loss!
this story seems to me basically middle-class, & shows how privilege was gained within such circles, even during hard times, & this is still the case, so i did find it difficult to sympathise with the characters on some occasions,
the book also raises questions about reasons to fight for your country, as war always does, & it looks, as here, often for selfish reasons(?)

Practical Magic
Practical Magic

Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 12.27

5.0 out of 5 stars top plot, top creative writing, from a top author!, March 11 2006
This review is from: Practical Magic (Paperback)
like returning to an old friend, to re-read this book, love the movie, love the soundtrack
the only problem i had was the difference in storyline, after the film, everytime i read a piece of antonia's or kylie's character, realising they had switched the two over, & also made their screen characters younger,
however, after reading this, i noticed that the crossover from book to film had been undertaken with care, & preserved a lot of the original quotes written
the film also evoked much more warmth, or at least the screen characters did, than those originally in the book.
this really is one of my fave stories ever, & my fave movies also. it really is totally magic. & one of my faves from alice hoffman, along with here on earch & turtle moon.

Solitude Standing
Solitude Standing
Price: CDN$ 8.42

5.0 out of 5 stars subtle, haunting, & mesmerising., March 8 2006
This review is from: Solitude Standing (Audio CD)
i like this slightly more than the first album.
it has some really strong songs & beautifully played music.
"gypsy" is a lovely, romantic song, & i adore the spanish guitars & overall feeling of "calypso".
"ironbound/poultry" is lovely musically,
"solitude standing" i also love.
"wooden horse" is i think the strongest track here.
i enjoy suz's songs as they have such a gentle vulnerability expressed within them & such a simple thread runs through the songs, but is very effective & mesmerising & also inspiring, imaginative & visionary......

Suzanne Vega

4.0 out of 5 stars the queen of subtleties., March 8 2006
This review is from: Suzanne Vega (Audio CD)
i bought this when first released on vinyl, as i loved the folky guitar playing & the gentle, poetic, beautifully crafted lyrics.
suz was a very rare & understated talent, absolutely adore "the queen & the soldier" for it's strong but subtle political statement, as well as it's tragically romantic one.
also, "small blue thing" was always a fave for it's beautiful sensitivity. "some journey" is also a wonderful romantic song.
mostly love all the songs, a great collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars '90s soul classic, March 7 2006
This review is from: So Close (Audio CD)
this album is for me a classic soul collection from the '90s, & the single releases from here include: so close, ain't no man, don't be a stranger, express, special kind of love & this time.
my favourite track is "falling" as is gorgeous, but every song here is good,
dina had a big & soulful, amazing voice, all the songs are really pretty with brilliant production, and still sound really funky & upbeat.
one of my top fave albums from the '90s that i still enjoy spinnin'!

5.0 out of 5 stars a '90s soul masterpiece., March 6 2006
This review is from: So Close (Audio CD)
this for me is perhaps the best soul album of the '90s & is choc-ful of hits: so close, special kind of love, express, don't be a stranger, ain't no man, & also the amazing "falling" - my fave track.
dina's vocals are amazing here, & the production is top notch.
there is not a bad song here, & is really up-tempo.
i have a copy, & tho for most people this album is long-gone, i still love to listen to these tracks, really pretty songs, & great funky grooves, soaring soulful vocals & brilliant instrumental backing. just wonderful!
