3.0 out of 5 stars Alright musical soundtrack... not bad, but also not great, Nov. 20 2011
This review is from: The Wizard of Oz (Audio CD)
The songs which were in the original movie, such as "Over the Rainbow", are capably sung and produced.

However, I was also looking forward to the new songs that Andrew Lloyd Webber has added to "complete" the story, and they are hit and miss.

The extra song Dorothy gets at the beginning, "Nobody Understands Me", makes her seem whiny and annoying. The Witch's song is alright but mostly forgettable. Glinda's ballad "Already Home" is nice, and Professor Marvel's song at the beginning is fine too.

More of a personal pet peeve, but I'm not a huge fan of talking and dialogue on soundtrack CDs, and this CD has too much of it included, some of it annoyingly over-acted.

Overall, I think I will listen to the CD and an interesting addition for "Wizard of Oz" fans, but not as good as I was hoping it would be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome series, Aug. 27 2011
This review is from: Wind at My Back S1/2 Comp (DVD)
"Wind at My Back" is a great Canadian family drama about a family torn apart by the Great Depression of the 1930s.

In this first season, Jack and Honey's hardware store goes bankrupt, and they are forced to relocate to Jack's home town, where his domineering mother still runs the silver mine. This show is great for family viewing, with stories about Jack and Honey's two boys which also appeal to younger viewers.

The show originally aired on the CBC, as well as in the US on WAM! TV, the Hallmark Channel, the Odyssey Channel, BYU TV and INSP TV. It has re-run in Canada on the W Network and Bravo! Canada.

This was recently re-released, and each season should have 4 single-sided discs. It might be better to purchase from Sullivan Entertainment's shop to ensure it is not the older double-sided disc set. The series didn't really have the budget to have too many behind-the-scenes, so the only extra is a short featurette with brief interviews from the cast members which aired when this show first premiered.

Despite the lack of extras, I think the 13 episodes themselves are worth it, as I have watched each of them many times.

This show was made by Sullivan Entertainment, so periodically check their online store for possible specials. It's rare but does happen once in a while and could very well be cheaper if you buy there. If you can afford it, it might be best to buy all the seasons in one go for a discounted price.

Sullivan Entertainment has put the first episode on YouTube if you wish to see it first:

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Second Season, Aug. 27 2011
This is the second season of "Wind at My Back", which follows the Bailey and Sutton families in the fall of 1933 and into 1934, as Honey begins her life with Max Sutton while May deals with troubles with Silver Dome Mines and Grace tries to get a job.

This was recently re-released, and should have 4 single-sided discs. It might be better to purchase from Sullivan Entertainment's shop to ensure it is not the older double-sided disc set. The series didn't really have the budget to have too many behind-the-scenes, so the extras are minimal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Final reunion movie, Aug. 27 2011
This is a reunion movie made after "Wind at My Back" was abruptly cancelled after five seasons. It takes place in 1938, two years after Season 5. Unfortunately, neither Shirley Douglas (May) nor Kathryn Greenwood (Grace) were available when the movie was filmed so neither of those characters appear in the film, which made it difficult to provide any closure to the series.

Nevertheless, it's a moving story about a girl who Hub meets in college, and involves Canada's refusal to accept Jewish refugees in the year before World War II. It is worthwhile to see as it is the final glimpse into the lives of these characters.

There are no special features on the DVD, just the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Match of Story and Beethoven's Music, Aug. 21 2011
The magic of this CD is that it is a story that perfectly blends together Beethoven's best known pieces with a moving and engaging story that sheds light into the composer's life. It is as enjoyable for adults as it is for children, which sets this disk apart from many of the others in the Classical Kids series, which unfortunately can be grating for parents to listen to with somewhat obnoxious characters aimed to generate laughter from young kids. I highly recommend this CD to introduce children to classical music and Beethoven's music and life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Season 2 of "Emily of New Moon", Aug. 21 2011
This series was filmed on Prince Edward Island and featured beautiful scenery, but for some reason, the picture quality is a bit fuzzy and rough in this release, and I'm not sure if it was meant to be that way, or if it was a bad transfer onto DVD.

The second season deviates from the books significantly since the actress who played Aunt Elizabeth left and was written out of the show. There are a few good episodes, and all the actors are excellent, but the storyline isn't very enjoyable with the new relatives who move to live with Emily, Laura and Jimmy. I thought the third season was much better, so it might be worth it to stick with the show during this transition season.

The musical score is haunting, and that was a big reason I liked this series, along with the good cast.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing final season, Aug. 21 2011
This review is from: Wind at My Back: Season 5 (DVD)
There are several reasons for Season 5 being disappointing. First of all, the head writer changed and the stories and the characters feel a bit different. Secondly, the season was unexpectedly cancelled by the CBC after this season, so the ending is abrupt and feels incomplete and unfinished. The CBC did allow one reunion movie meant to tie up some of the loose ends, so look for that after seeing Season 5. It is called "A Wind at My Back Christmas", and aired in 2001.

Nevertheless, some people might like the plot of this season, and the main cast is the same and they try their best with this new material. I personally prefer to think of Season 1-4 as the definitive set for this show.

There are 4 DVD discs. The extras include some bloopers, and a clip of the director Stefan Scaini running through scenes with Tyrone Savage (Fat) from the Season 3 episode "Life on Mars".

It is a bit tough to find this series in stores, while online, the prices are often high. This show was made by Sullivan Entertainment, so periodically check their online store for possible specials. It's rare but does happen once in a while. If you can afford it, it might be best to buy all the seasons in one go for a discounted price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good fourth season, Aug. 21 2011
This review is from: Wind at My Back: Season 4 (DVD)
This is the fourth season of "Wind at My Back", which follows the Bailey and Sutton families from the summer of 1935 into 1936, as Max struggles to keep the family running, Hub deals with the return of an old friend, and Grace tackles the challenge of radio journalism.

Season 4 is as enjoyable as Season 3, and I have watched the 13 episodes many times.

There are 4 DVD discs. As with the other releases, the series didn't really have the budget to have too many behind-the-scenes, so the only extra on this disc is a short interview from 1998 with Dylan Provencher (Hub) and Tyrone Savage (Fat). It's quite interesting, but I wish it were longer.

Unfortunately, it is a bit tough to find this series in stores, while online, the prices are often high. 5.0 out of 5 stars A very good third season, Aug. 21 2011
This is the third season of "Wind at My Back", which follows the Bailey and Sutton families in the fall of 1934 and into 1935, as May decides what to do after what happened to the mine at the end of the second season, Honey deals with Hub growing up into a teenager, and Grace navigates the choppy waters of romance.

There are 4 DVD discs. The series didn't really have the budget to have too many behind-the-scenes, so the only extra on this disc is a short tour of the show's set from 1998 with Dylan Provencher (Hub) and Tyrone Savage (Fat). It's quite interesting, but I wish it were longer.

Despite the lack of extras, I think the 13 episodes themselves are worth it, as I have watched each of them many times.
