1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time, July 7 2003
This movie is slow. It doesn't make any sense.

Optical Electronics in Modern Communications
Optical Electronics in Modern Communications
by Amnon Yariv
Edition: Hardcover
15 used & new from CDN$ 33.27

2.0 out of 5 stars Incoherent, March 17 2003
Yariv lacks the ability to put concepts before equations. Half the time is spent understanding what stuff means rather than learning the physics. He never really explains what quantities mean physically. I feel Yariv has serious problems with using the letter to describe several quantities (as another reviewer wrote).
I wish he would write in words what he is trying to say rather than describing everything with equations. He leaves many important concepts as homework problems to be derived.
He also has a very arrogent tone in the book, when he says stuff can be easily derived and it can't.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works better as a reference book than a textbook, May 7 2002
As a technical scholar who deals in photonic research day in and day out I have felt that the Photonics book has always functioned more like a reference than a text. Unless one already a moderate familiarity with much of the subject material it can be dense and overly generally. The book itself however covers a huge amount of topics in optics. There is an overall lack of examples and practice problems for the student. I would recommend Yariv's Optical Electronics in Modern Communications for the Senior-Graduate level student.

3.0 out of 5 stars For an informal test it's good, Nov. 5 2001
This book is good for learning concepts but bad for actually learning how to do Vector Calculus problems.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for reading but not doing, Nov. 5 2001
This is a good book if you want to understand the concepts of EM but it's lacking when you actually want to begin doing some problems. None of the answers are supplied in the back of the book. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in your professors office if you're using this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not The Best!, May 11 2001
This is a math book for those in Physics and Engineering. I found the book somewhat lacking in examples. And it very often will not even provide answers to the odd numbered problems. It's almost essential to purchase the solutions manual to this if you want to understand the first several chapters (if your self studying). The text also lacks good visual examples. It totally leaves out Systems of Differential Equations (aka Dynamical Systems).

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for an under graduate., Dec 27 2000
I've never given a 5 for anything. But this is pretty darn good for a first edition book. At my university we are without the benefit of an actual text and must resort to a booklet written by our instructor who seemingly feels his book is superior to any others. But this book is fantastic because it starts with the basics. I think this is great for any undergrad. Only 1 year of intro physics and 1 year of calculus needed to finish this book. My only gripe like the oher guy. No answers to the questions! NONE. Not even the odd questions. Needs more example problems and a chapter summary would be nice. The author needs to remember most of us are coming from Halliday, Resnick, Walker and are very used to their format. Good topic selection too. I hope we adopt this book at my department.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect, Dec 26 2000
Sure maybe you are a Math major then this book is a 5. But for us Physics/Engineering majors this book is a 4.
No Hardcover, No Solutions Manual, Format is bland, hard to write your own notes, and the physical quality is weak. More suited for a tom clancy novel than a Textbook.
All in all though if this were your only book in ODE...you would learn ODE well. Answers to most problems and good examples. Easy to follow. I think most of the problems areas are cause by the publisher trying to save money and lower the retail price than the author's ability to produce a quality text book. I hope the authors get picked up by Wiley or Adison-Wesley not a weak discount publisher like Dover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very realistic Very Dramatic, Oct. 27 2000
Very Good Movie. The characters have a real feel to them, having been in the Army you can tell the division between the Officers, NCO's, and Privates. It's also very thought provoking though the only main weak spot is Charlie Sheen who seems to overact most of the movie. The plot is very original also. But don't of this movie as a war movie. Think about it as a drama taking place during a war.

4.0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Suck, Oct. 10 2000
As A Physics Undergrad, I've Used The 5th Edition of the bookand Also the 4th. Pretty much the same material. I've gone through an entire semester of not going to lecture and just reading the book for studying and I got a B+ in my Physics 1 class. So it's not bad at all. As always you should work all the problems just like any math or physics book and the highlighted formulas are great when you don't want to bother looking at proofs or derivations. It has good chapter summaries which give you all the relavent formulas you need and the solutions manuals are decent but not very clear because it skips a lot of steps. Of course most of you are required to buy this book anyways.
