4.0 out of 5 stars Victor Va Va Voom !!!, July 19 2004
My son gets up early!! But it's never monotonous because I get a healthy mix of getting up early and his crankiness. Milk just won't do anymore so I've learned to turn on the "boob tube". Now I have to get creative , because the news , really doesn't get him out of his moods , so I turned on the Noggin channel. He loves the Noggin shows. But the only thing that he loves more is this red pants lady who plays a guitar and can't dance. But she sure is entertaining and fun to watch. I intially saw Laurie Berkner on the Noggin Channel , singing "Victor Vito". My son and I were inbetween shows , suddenly , this lady comes on with red pants and a colorful shirt and is singing chidren's songs and playing a guitar. My son was amazed and couldn't take his eyes , of the screen. I couldn't either because , although she's got no rhythm.....she ain't hard on the eyes. Shortly , after that initial viewing , I found myself anticipating her videos , inbetween shows. I guess it was destined that I visited her website and saw that she had released a video. Although , it's poor format , and not put together , incredibly creatively...there's no denying that she's got the stuff , to make the kids happy. She's like a female Mr.Rogers. But I'm only speaking comparatively , in terms of her attraction , for the kids. Because I never got a video of Mr. Rogers and I grew up with him. My son loves the video and I highly recommend it. To be perfectly honest.....I kinda like it too. Because she's hot and I can't get in trouble for entertaining my kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Southern perspective , on a south paw, named Balboa, Jun 4 2004
I'm not going to bore you with the storyline details , because honestly....there's noone who hasn't seen a Rocky film. However , if for some unknown ,and unforgivable reason , you haven't seen the first installment, of the Rocky series , then I highly recommend that you see this one. Whether you're into great acting , interesting characters , love stories , or just a plain old a.. whupp'in film , this is your class A ticket to ride. People have said that Rocky's sequels don't measure up to the first one , and I think it depends on your prospective. I will say, that the first one ( Rocky ), wasn't written for a sequel. Sylvester Stallone , got inspired to write a story and he took his time , writing it. Therefore , the story line and charater building was one of the script's, most important aspects and it created a buildup to the eventual fight , that's unforgettable and you'll find yourself holding onto the edge of your seat and swinging your fists in the air. This particuliar dvd version is extra special because it takes you through , scene by scene , with commentary from the original cast. Even old sly did a special , opening presentation. This is not only one of the best boxing films of all time , it's one of the best films of all time. If you liked any of the Rocky films , you'll love this one. Great acting , great script , great direction , great cinematography , great action choreography , great editing , and an unforgetable musical score will make you believe that this underdog and south paw , can really "do it" !!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pryor Genious and previous talent, Mar 9 2004
This review is from: Bustin' Loose (Full Screen) (DVD)
Richard Pryor has become an icon , in the comedic world , of standup. However , his film work displays sheer emotional and electric moments , that can be compared to catching a tornado and training it to turn , only when you photograph it. In lamens terms , he portrays his characters with an emotional depth that only an individual who's been through the ropes of life , can show....and come across as spontaneous and believable. From , Lady Sings The Blues , Some Kind Of Hero , Which Way is Up ? , Stir Crazy , and Bust'in Loose , we get to see Pryor double as a comedic talent and dramatic actor. Whereas , Bust'in loose doesn't display the raunchy humorous side of Pryor , it does give us some very funny scenes and dramatic ones as well. Bust'in Loose , can be appreciated for two reasons. One , if you've seen Pryor's infamously hilarious raunchy stand up , or earlier works , you can apprecite seeing him in a role that doesn't call for over the top profanity and innuendo's. Second , the film can stand on it's own merits , because Pryor and Tyson light up the screen and provide so much chemisrty , that even if you've never heard of them before , you'd still enjoy the film. Bust'in Loose is written and acted fantastically. The only downside , is a scene in which , it becomes a slapstick farce , which takes away from the film. I mean , c'mon ? Cicily Tyson , making a light bulb , light up , in her mouth ? Ridiculous. That's why this film gets a three star rating , instead of a five. I felt betrayed by the writer or director , for even going there , after I've invested over an hour , getting to know the characters. Whoever stuck that in the film....it was a bad choice. Probably the ( obviously )insecure director , because that idiotic , buffoon-riddled, scene didn't get edited. I guess they wanted to reach all audience levels. Even those with IQ's lower that two.Anyhow, the film , luckily , returns to it's believability. The, current dvd edition offers nothing except providing an abitlity to choose a scene. But , I loved the movie as a kid , and I was willing to settle , just so I could enjoy the film on a lazy Sunday or something. Hopefully , they'll re-release it soon. I'd like to hear commentary and updates on the "kids". Great soundtrack and cinematography ( especially , the shots of Washington state , as they're driving through the mountains ). I highly recommend Bust'in Loose. It's just as enjoyable as the first time I saw it , when I was nine.

4.0 out of 5 stars From alcohol to the alps, May 20 2003
This review is from: Continental Divide (DVD)
John Belushi is forever connected to the alcohol abusing, self depricating , and party animal charators that he 's reknowned for playing in other films. Luckily , before his untimely demise , he participated in this project...Continental Divide. It totally seperates him against typecast and shows just how much diversified acting ability , he had .Whereas , alot of people (typical Belushi fans)didn't appreciate this effort, I think it was extremely refreshing. It only took me about five minutes to forget that it was John Belushi portraying Ernie Souchak. A top dog columnist who's forced out of town to do a safer article , at the request of his boss , to save him from danger. Blair Brown's Nell Porter, provides the perfect opposite, for Belushi's Souchak. The film has a very basic "boy meets girl " formula. However ,the script and actors take this film to an all time high. It is a very special film that provides very special and cinematic moments. I enjoyed it when I was a teenager and I hated love story's. But there's more to this tale than just a typical spin. Definately not a film to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars mmmm.................juicy fruit, Feb 20 2003
What can I say , that could be different from every other review ? Probably nothing that would deviate too far from the positive reviews. This "Cookoo's Nest" dvd is one of the few that I've purchased twice , for my home collection. Actually , I bought it originally for my vhs collection and then snatched it up for my dvd , as soon as it came out. Now , they came out with a two disc version. I bought it two days ago. I watched all of it's special features and was spellbound and transfixed on it's content. Honestly , I felt like they gave me more than my money's worth. The "extras" section of the second dvd was worth the money in itself. Thanks, to all who put this package (2-discs) together. I guess they saw that the original dvd needed to be updated and treated with the same love that the fans have given the film , over the years. The remastered sound is excellent. The deleted scenes are wonderful to watch, especially if you've been a fan of this movie for years. It's also a pleasure to hear and see some of the stars relive the making of it , in the "making of" segment. The commentary from Milos Foreman and Michael Douglas provided pearls of info. and the gathering of details was placed together with utter perfection. The two disc series, covered every aspect from : the passing on of the screenplay, casting , filming activities , cast and crew information, and everything else that had to do with the production of the film ,that garnered several Academy Awards in '76. As for the movie , itself ? Jack Nicholson is a his best and is highlighted by all of the contrasting and equally estounding cast members.Particularly , the "discovered ,regular guy" turned actor that played Chief Bromden. Milos Foreman had the belief and foresight to give all of the actors improv space that provided a total creative freeforall. One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest provides modern cinema with some of the most unforgettable images ever captured on film and offers a pelithera of flawless acting, around a simple story ,that will take your attention and engulf you to the point of no return. This movie will effect you and leave you thinking about it ,for days afterwards. Am I gabbing too much ? Okay, well let me wrap my perspective of this movie, with a line uttered from the character of Aide Washington......"outta sight , man. Outta sight. "

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent acting / great script / good extras, Feb 13 2003
This review is from: Training Day (Widescreen) (DVD)
Training Day, as an entire film is great. The dvd extras make this dvd extra special. You get deleted scenes , dir. commentary, music videos , and an alternate ending. Most times the "alternate ending " , added to newer dvd's, motivate me to buy it. Although, 9 times out of 10, you get an instant idea of why it was deleted ,in the first place. However, just to have that viewing option , it's worth the investment. Anyway, the film's actors deliver phenominal performances and catipult a simple script ,into a film that not only ,studies the motivations and psychology of people dealing with the corruption and life on the streets, but entertain and shock the viewers. As you should already know, Denzel Washington took home an Academy Award after his portrayal of a corrupt undercover police officer,in this production. Ethan Hawk, also works through his role as a rookie cop , with excellent believability and intensity. Although , this film has valuable lessons to learn , I don't recommend that you view this with the little ones. It contains scenes of drug use , very foul language, and graphic violence. Despite those aspects , Training Day offers a rare glimpse into the harsh realities of crime and deseption. Definately a dvd to buy. Even if you're not into the bad cop /good cop movies, seeing Denzel play a charcter that's as evil as his best good guy roles were , in the past, makes it worth your while. Alot of people I know were shocked that he could play bad, so good. But if they'd noticed , he gave a fantastic sinister performance as the younger juvenile Malcom X , in the Spike Lee movie. Anyway.......order Training Day and buckle your seat belts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film......bad dvd, Feb 12 2003
This particular dvd version does Bruce Lee an incredible injustice. Not only , is it converted to dvd in the worst possible way (cheap), but it's a widescreen version that leaves alot of the actors off the screen. I have this same film on vhs , and guess what ? It's alot better , and a studio version (Fox). I was highly dissappointed in this one , put out by a noname distributor. But that's what I get for trying to save a few bucks. If you stick with the Fox (20th Century) version , you can't lose. Once again , this version comes off as a cheap bootleg copy without any extras (commentary ect.). As for the film itself , excellent. It has Bruce taking revenge for his teacher's death. So what, if the plot's simple and a transparent effort to show off it's lead's ability to kick .... This movie , in particular , has the famous back yard brawl (hint's of Muhammad Ali's boxing influence on Mr. Lee are prvalent , here), and the dojo fight scene (with the num-chuck's). Plus , you get to see Bruce go undercover , as a nerd and an ending that is very special, because it never happens in any other Bruce Lee movie. His "Hollywood" charisma and intense acting skills have improved tremendously from his previous roles, and his presence is as hallucinating and electric ,as ever. Based on the fact that it is a great, Bruce Lee film , is the only reason I gave it three stars. I highly recommend the studio version , because you'll get your money's worth and will see it in a format that I'm sure Mr. Lee would've been proud of.

4.0 out of 5 stars The bomb diggidy version !, Feb 12 2003
Finally !! This two disc version of True Romance is excellent.I found the bonus info. , as entertaining as the film itself. Bonus commentary (from the director, the screenwriter, and actors), alternate ending, and the deleted scenes are the reasons that I found myself purchasing this particular dvd twice. I originally bought the director's edition , not knowing that there was this special two disc version. but it was well worth the investment. If you're a true Tarrentino fan, you know what it means to have the extra stuff that was edited out, and there's several interesting scenes...expecially, the first appearance of Drexel ( Gary Oldman), in the apartment. As for the film quality , great !! I love it when you can pick a scene , and while you choose , the pictures are moving in the little boxes. It lets me know that the people who made the dvd are saying to me.."hey , thanks for buying this old movie. here's a little something for you". It sounds corny , but hey. The movie itself , is spellbinding. Tarrentino's script plays out like a stage production on film , and the casted actor's bring life to an already imaginative and dramatized characters. Plot : A nobody named Clarence falls for a (lonely ,but spirited)prostitute. Dissatisfied with their existance and becoming exuberated with one another, they begin a quest for "a better tommorrow". But it's what happens in the middle of that basic plotline, that the excitement lies. This film exemplifies why Tarrentino became one of the hottest directors and screenwriters of the nineties. Excellent dialog , creative action sequences, fantastic actors, nice budget , and enough directorial insight..to allow Brad Pitt the freedom,to steal his scenes , as Floyd, are the reasons why I love this movie. It's definately worth the money. So don't cheat yourself and treat yourself to a little romance....Tarrentino style.

This review is from: Fists of Fury (Widescreen) (DVD)
First and foremost , I'm a devoted Bruce Lee fan. As for the movie , "Fists of Fury" , itself ? I give it 5 stars. How can you give anything less to the man that perpetuated all the kung fu movies, after him ? You can't . I certainly wouldn't. There'll never be another like him. The film , itself is flawless ... kicking. It's got the famous ice factory scene, the yard scenes , and Jackie Chan performing the longest fall in kung fu history on film , at that time. This film is very significant. But this rating , I give to the dvd "cheap" version. Check this out : I have all of his movies on vhs , as well. However , I've recently converted to dvd's. With that in mind , I wanted to purchase all of Lee's movies on dvd. Fists of Fury is one of Bruce Lee's finest movies and I appreciate it's importance to the kung fu genre. However , I figured I'd save a few bucks and get the version that costs less than , say , an official version ( with an actual picture of Bruce on the cover , instead of a cartoon or painting). In my cheap version , it is intirely in fullscreen. So much , in fact , that parts of the film run off of the screen. It was painful to watch. From that point , I ordered the normal versions of his other movies , and found the format phenominally different and I could start watching the Bruce Lee films , the way that he would want any of his fans to. Just stay away from the cheap versions and stick to the official studio ones. You can't lose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenominal !!!, Feb 10 2003
The Return of the Dragon , although dated , in one of the best Lee movies filmed. The plot is rahter silly , but what do you want ? Terms of Endearment or Bruce Lee being forced into dilemmas, that make him kick, major...? Exactly. regardless of the plot , however , the viewer can't helped but become entranced in Lee's convincing and dedicated performance as an out of town relative, that comes to work for his uncle , who's being forced into selling his restaurant, by a gang of violent thugs. as you would expect , Lee won't stand for that. I mean that literally , because he's always off of his feet , kicking someone in the face. The alley scenes are hilarious and cleverly shot. But the definate highlight of this film is the showdown in the greek colosiums with a very young Chuck Norris. The filming was clever and imaginative , and there's an early attempt and a dolly shot (when Bruce is walking through the colosium). As for the showdown ? It's a classic fight that ends with even more class. I won't spoil it for you , but it goes to show that respect for an opponant is just as important as the actual fight itself. Ironic, that these philosophies are highlighted in Mr. Lee's overseas films , but not so much in the american one(s). I could get political and go into who decides what should be edited and why, but I won't get into a buch of rhetoric. i'll just say that this is a must have for any collector and a must see for any kung fu fan that hasn't.
