5.0 out of 5 stars the hardest halo, Jun 6 2004
This review is from: Broken (Audio CD)
There are several things about this EP you should know if you're thinking of purchasing it. If you love the sound of the Fragile, you might not like this. The Broken EP is the loudest, angriest and hardest of the Halos. Now that that is said, it is also one of the best Halos and should be in every NIN fans cd collection. The songs are as follows:

Pinion: From the first listen it sounds simple, just a minute long build up to the next song. This, however, is one of the most well made songs on the cd. The music video for it(found on Halo 12) is kind of sick, but worth a watch.

Wish: The most popular song on this cd (won a few awards as i recall) but, not the best. Very fun to listen to and you'll find yourself with the lyrics stuck in your head. (nothing too special about the video but, still worth a watch)

Last: The only song on the Broken EP that doesn't have a music video. Used to be my favorite on this cd with the lyrics. Doesn't get old, but, other songs get better. The ending is the best.

Help Me I am in Hell: The most boring track but is needed to get the entire effect. The video is that of just a man eating in a room of flies.

Happiness in Slavery: The best song on the cd. It catches you from with the intense screams in the beginning, to the creative lyrics thru the middle ("don't open your eyes you won't like what you see, the blind have been blessed with security" is one of my favorites) into the mechanical sounding hell at the end. There aren't words to describe how great this song is, so listen. Also, the video to this song is really really good, but will gross out some people. Very well made and just art.

Gave Up: Nothing too special about this track except for the great lyrics. Is unlike any other song on this cd and is a great way to finish the Broken EP.

The next two tracks are not actual songs on the Broken EP but hidden tracks that originally came on a seperate cd.

Physical: an Adam Ant cover. Fun to listen to every now and then but nothing really special. Great cover, though

Suck: Great lyrics, but, that's about it. I like the part with the lines "I'll heal your wounds i'll set you free, I'm Jesus Christ on ecstasy".

As a whole, this cd runs for a total of about 32 minutes and is a great buy if it's the type of music you like. However, as I sayed earlier, it is the hardest Halo and some of the language may offend you. Should be in every NIN fans collection though.

4.0 out of 5 stars tsk, tsk, tsk, Jun 6 2004
One thing that was a disappointment to me was that the Sin cd single does not actually have the album version of Sin. Now that that is out in the open, I'll go on to saying that this was not one of my favorite NIN cd singles, and is more for the halo collectors then casual fans. I'll go into a little bit of detail of the songs as follows:

Sin (long): I hate saying this, but, one word... weak. This track almost ruined the song for me. It's almost ridiculous. I skip it everytime this cd enters my stereo.

Sin (dub): As others have commented, this is the only track that feels like a remix. But, I still really don't like it. It would have been better an instrumental. This track has what ruined Long as it's only lyrics, the repetition of the words 'sin' and 'control'. Really terrible, is skipped like the song before it.

Get Down, Make Love: This is truely the best song on this. Before I was a NIN fan, I was a Queen fan (if you like this song, it's on News of the World) and I was not disappointed with the rendition that is portrayed onthis cd. No one can match Freddie Mercury at singing, however, Trent doesn't sing. He takes a different approuch and screams it. Bravo. (note, the sound clips are from the Original version)

Sin (short): Not as good as the original, however, it's listenable. The three remixes of Sin found on this cd all have one thing in common... a dance style drum part. I personally think that draws from the angst in the lyrics, but, some people like it. The only good thing about this track is that is doesn't go into a long annoying piece with the repitition of words that make the song lose meaning.

As a whole, I think the majority of this cd butchered one of the best NIN songs, but for the Queen cover, it's worth checking out.

4.0 out of 5 stars easily overshadowed but good, Jun 6 2004
This review is from: Day The World Went Away (Audio CD)
Most people would say that this CD is for hardcore halo collectors, and I don't disagree with this. There are three tracks on this single in which two of them can be found on the double-LP the Fragile. The songs are as followed

The Day the World Went Away: this is a great song, that most people say should have more singing. I fully disagree with this thinking that TDTWWA is a well ballanced song, with great lyrics, and all around perfect. It's easy to get stuck in your head, but isn't pop-ish either. Give this track a listen, it usually hooks you from the first listen.

Starf***ers Inc.: I completely hate this song, but I know a lot of people that love it. It's harder then any of the other songs on the Fragile, and most definitly on this cd. For the type of song it has great lyrics, and great music. It just never struck a cord with me. All around alright song, though.

The Day the World Went Away (quiet): The highlight on this cd, this track is far better then the two in which it follows. It lives up to the name, being quiet, and painting a much softer, yet just as powerful, picture in which the original TDTWWA song. This can also be found on one of Halo 15 (either pt. 1 or 2) but, I strongly advise purching Halo 13 (TDTWWA) instead because of the price difference.

I purchased this CD for 1 penny and haven't looked back. It is worth the dollar you'd have to spend to get it here Used though, and I stongly advise it. I hope this has convinced you to purchase this cd, but if it hasn't, that's cool, you'd know if you'd like it better then me.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the last good cds, Jun 6 2004
This review is from: The Fragile (Audio CD)
There is a lot to be said about this double-LP. There are 23 tracks, 6 of them being instrumentals. Some would comment that the sheer volumn of the Fragile makes it a unlistenable. If this is you that's fine, stick with something more straight forward, maybe the Broken EP or March of the Pigs. However, if you see the art in this album and that no song could be removed, well, good for you (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins might be another one to check out). As follows are the highlights of the album, in my opinion:

Somewhat Damaged: only four notes, but arranged well. Is a great opener and reminds me of a different side of Mr. Self Destruct.
The Day the World Went Away: Great lyrics, and just the right amount of music. A classic. (note, there is a great remix of this song on halo 13 or 15, The Day the World Went Away quiet)
The Frail: simply beautiful. Check this out even if you don't like NIN. (note, a great remix on Things Falling Apart)

We're in this Together: Not one of the best songs on this double-LP, however it's well made and has a great piano part at the end. A great song to listen to if you're just starting to get into the NIN scene.
The Fragile: Probably one of the best songs on this. Slow, quiet, and gives off a ray of hope. Words can't describe this song, so, go listen to it.
Just Like You Imagined: Instrumental, but, a great one. Trent knows what he's doing. This song seems to give off a different meaning depending on what mood you're in.
La Mer: God, a great song.
The Way out is Through: Has the opposite approuch of Somewhat Damaged. A great way to start the second half of the Fragile.
Into the Void: I couldn't say La Mer wasn't a great song and not say that this one isn't. A very catchy bass line with very appropriate lyrics. "Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away." If only more groups now-a-day wrote so well.
Complication: One of the best songs, i like to think of it as the pt.2 of Just Like You Imagined, even though how different they sound.
I'm Looking Forward to Joing You, Finally: written because of Trent's Grandmum that had died in the making of the album. So much emotion in it. This song means the most to me, the line "Sweet smell of sunshine, I remember some time" is just perfect.
Ripe (with decay): The best instrumental. In the background you can even hear flies. Try listening to this song with headphones in the dark. You almost feel like you are decaying.

All around this is a great album and way worth the 20 or so dollars it cost to purchase. If you like Trent's lyrics but don't like all the loud music, this is a great buy, or if you just like music that is all around art, this is the cd. I don't regret buying this, and those that do regret thier purchase should re-listen to it. As a sum up, this is one of the best albums of all time from a man that is among few that still make creative music. (note, if you have a record player get the vinyll release of the Fragile. the cd released cut out, in my opinion, two of the best tracks on it: 10 miles high and the New flesh)

5.0 out of 5 stars Trent Reznor is a musical god, Jun 5 2004
This review is from: Downward Spiral (Audio CD)
I've had this album for a long time now and decided to finally write a review on it (this is also my first review to write, so it's kind of crappy). I'm sure this has been stated many times before, however this is just a great cd (the only one i can think of that is better in my opinion is the White Album). Each song has it's own place in the cd, and if you read into the music, it tells a bit of a story (no song is filler). This cd was not meant to just skip around and listen to random tracks, the placement of the songs is one of the points in which this album is great. Now that that is stated, below is a quick sum up of the album:
Mr. Self Destruct: a great introduction to a great album. I love the shifts in style.
Piggy: One of the best tracks, and one of the craziest songs. You really just have to listen to it with headphones or you won't get how insane it is.
Heresy: Strong with the lyrics, but, kind of weak overall. Very fun to listen to around Jesus-freaks
March of the Pigs: It's just awesome, I can't really say much about it except the single to it is really good.
Closer: Probably the most well known song on it. Really good video. The only really good thing about the song is the ending.
Ruiner: I always liked this song. I don't know how I could really describe it, so, just listen to it.
The Becoming: One of the best songs Trent has ever made. About a man metaphorically turing into a machine. Also, it has a crazy time signature that you'll just freak out to.
I Do Not Want This: A lot of people don't like this song. I personally do, but, it takes a lot of listens to actually enjoy it. Give it a chance.
Big Man with a Gun: I remember the first time i actually listened to what he was saying. I happened to be in the car with my mum... enough said.
A Warm Place: I always liked this song, it always just seemed like a brief point to relax in the maelstrom that is the Downward Spiral. It gets me to sleep when i'm in an insomiac kind of mood.
Eraser: In my opinion, the worst track. I like to think of it as a build up to the best song on this cd, though.
Reptile: I love this song. Paints a perfect picture.
The Downward Spiral: Another good song, if you listen you'll be reminded of Closer. Great lyrics to this song.
Hurt: Another well known song, and this one actually deserves it. Great track, i love the wind effect.
This might not have been any help, but I just felt obligated to write a review for the Downward Spiral. If you don't already own this album, I strongly recomend it.
