5.0 out of 5 stars It was all building to this., Nov. 19 2007
This review is from: Confessor (Hardcover)
Goodkind has succeeded where so many other authors have failed. He delivers a flawless finale to his series. Satisfying, meaty, and mind expanding.

His story at last comes to a close, not with a whimper or an abrupt rushed conclusion, but with life affirming authority. A complete triumph of storytelling.

Goodkind has a message, and he wraps the finale in all that has been learned from the previous 9 books. His message is absolute, and crosses from the world he created to our own without tainting it's meaning or veracity.

Goodkind's book becomes a Sword of Truth, cutting through the readers perceptions and piercing the heart. More than Rolling with Harry Potter, or Tolkien with Rings, Goodkind's story is resolved in a way that is at once completely satisfying, and disturbingly prescient for our times... for all time. His message is one all people everywhere can benefit from. His story is ageless and heart-wrenching.

In my most creative and brilliant dreams I could not hope to approach the mastery and skill with which Terry Goodkind wields his pen. Better than anything I could have imagined. Confessor is simply perfect.

Join the characters of Richard and Kahlan in their final adventure. And, prepare yourself for their world... and yours, to never be the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars A jem of a movie, Oct. 31 2007
This review is from: Blood Diamond [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
Not usually my type of movie, this one impressed me. I don't as a rule go for the big message heavy flic. I was concerned this movie would do what most OSCAR(tm) movies do, and go for the depressing ending that makes you feel like crap for being human. "Blood Diamond" does not fall into this trap.

The movie is devastating in it's depiction of the hardships of the African people. It makes it real with astonishing performances, and brilliant direction. The scenes of war, strife and turmoil will shake you to the bone. Yet, the overall movie and it's inevitable ending remains hopeful, and makes the viewer feel like they can make a difference.

The High Definition transfer here is a little soft, and some scenes have an overall red tinted hue. I'm not sure if this was choice of the director, or a sub-par video encode, but for this reason "Blood Diamond" loses one star.

The sound is lively and urgent. Despite being subtitled to help with various tribal accents, the sound remained easy to understand even without them, due to the clean and tight audio. The action sequences are where the sound really comes alive. The sound alone is a terrific reason to recommend this title.

The special features are plentiful and informative. This title makes wonderful use of the In-Movie Experience that has become HD's signature. Online content is also choc full, taking this movie to a whole new level.

I recommend "Blood Diamond" and encourage those who are hesitant to give it a watch. You wont be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reloaded for a media Revolution!, Oct. 31 2007
Highly anticipated, and well worth the wait. This collection is a triumph to the filmmakers, and a welcome boon to the fans of great movies and High Definition.

The benefits of this collection are too numerous to mention. Everything you want is here. Special features galore. So many, they nearly drip from the packaging. In-Movie experience, commentaries, behind the scenes, Making of's, interviews, etcetera, etcetera. Nothing is ignored.

The High Definition sound and picture quality are off the charts. Bullet-time slow-mos, and Sentinel death swarms erupt out of the screen. The sound-scape is totally engrossing and immersive.

I found only two complaints to the otherwise perfect experience that is "The Matrix: The Ultimate Collection [HD DVD]".

1) The often mentioned lackluster ending of "Matrix: Revolutions"

and

2) In some instances the 1080p transfer is TOO clear. On occasion you can detect blue-screen edging that was concealed in past poorer quality SD transfers to DVD. Though a tribute to the quality of HD DVD, it is somewhat jarring to see on an otherwise perfect image disrupted by a clumsy special effect shot.

My complaints here are minor, and only contribute to the loss of 1 star. This collection remains one of the best arguments for HD DVD. "The Matrix: The Ultimate Collection [HD DVD]" is a worthy addition to any movie fan's library.

4 out of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy Cop Action at it's best!, Oct. 31 2007
This review is from: Hot Fuzz [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
This movie is pure Action entertainment. The makers of "Shaun of the Dead" do it again. This time they do for Action movies what "Shaun" did for horror.

Tough as nails Constable Nicholas Angel is transferred from his preferred London Police Force to the sleepy town of Sanford. At first, an idyllic piece of British country paradise, Sanford soon unravels with a string of mysterious deaths that lead Angel into the tormented underbelly that is Sanford's dark heart. But first he must capture the resident fugitive swan, deal with renegade hedge trimmers, and pick up some crisps from the shop.

In terms of video quality, "Hot Fuzz" is simply fantastic. This High definition transfer is spot on. Every blade of grass in the gorgeous countryside can be appreciated, every cobblestone, and leaf are clear and bright.

The sound will floor you. Primarily a comedy, the dialog in Hot Fuzz comes through loud and clear. Explosions and gunfire are igniting to the senses without subduing the crisp dialog and plentiful one-liners.

The special features on this HD DVD will keep you busy for days. Packed with goodies you'll get plenty of mileage from this title. Also, presented in dual format HD DVD + regular DVD you can take this movie wherever you like.

This movie makes "Lethal Weapon" and "Rush Hour" look like drowsy naps in the afternoon. The laughs don't stop, and the action will take your breath away. Out of 5 stars I rate "Hot Fuzz" an 11

God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything
God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

5.0 out of 5 stars A serious argument!, Oct. 27 2007
I hesitate to recommend this book to those of the religious persuasion. It WILL challenge your beliefs. It WILL make you angry. And the biggest reason it will do so, is because it is well thought out, well researched, and well reasoned.

Once begun, I was unable to put this book down. If there is a flaw in his argument I was unable to find it.

Hitchens lays out in a reasoned, methodical manner how religion, from the most benign local church, to the biggest organized machines of modern doctrine, disrupt and bespoil the lives of everyone they touch. This is not a book for the faint of heart. Preconceived notions will be shaken, if not shattered.

He uses historical references, and multiple examples of modern practices of all the major religious institutions. He opens the readers eyes to what is really going on in their local church. It is a disturbing read. This author does not steer away from controversy.

Hitchens arguments are sound and inescapable. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to be challenged. And I caution those readers who will be easily offended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transforming expectations!, Oct. 27 2007
Top notch movie.

This is why movies exist. Citizen Kane it's not, but that's okay. Not every movie has to be melodramatic and teach you a lesson. Sometimes a movie just has to be fun.

Legions of fans aside. Toy-line and cartoons ignored. This movie rocks! In fact, I found nothing to complain about at all. This is a beautiful popcorn flick that is a joy to experience.

The video transfer to HD is simply the best I have seen. Every detail is on glorious display. This movie is bright and sparkling. The huge robots are seen in full sunlight, and never once do you doubt they exist. Every frame of this HD DVD glows with a spectacular clarity unparalleled by any other title.

The sound is simply amazing. Every whir and click of the robots function can be heard. No wallop of the battle scenes are left without a visceral punch to the guts. And, even amongst the cacophony of slamming metal and grinding gears, the dialog remains clear and vibrant.

If special features are your thing, then you wont be disappointed here. There is simply too much included on this two disc set to watch in one sitting. Fantastic replay value.

For pure fun, Transformers 2 disk HD DVD gets a perfect 5 out of 5!

1.0 out of 5 stars Copyright Violation in Disguise!, Oct. 25 2007
This review is from: Transmorphers (DVD)
Wait, this copyright infringement isn't hiding at all. From the company that brought you titles like "Pirates of Treasure Island" "Snakes on a Train" and "An Ant's Life" comes this newest abomination.

This company seems to make a living hoping people don't read too closely, or pay too much attention to their purchases. They prey on well meaning relatives who buy movies for their children without knowing the exact names of the movies their tots want.

This film is a double rip-off. Like "TransFORMERS" an intelligent alien robot culture descends to earth. They can change their shape and are greatly technologically advanced. This is where they switch it up. Ala "The MATRIX" the intelligent machines drive the humans underground, from where they must mount an offensive to re-take the surface of their post-apocalyptic world.

How this company isn't sued into oblivion is a mystery to me. To add insult to injury, this movie is horrible. Terrible acting. Horrendous special effects that looked like they were ripped from a bad 1990's video game. And an even worse story-line that should never have been allowed to exist. This DVD is an absolute insult to anyone that views it.

Sometimes there is joy in watching a bad movie. I often love to have a "Bad movie night" for me and my friends. Sometimes the gem of a good movie is lost to poor production values, and can be great fun. This movie isn't one of those. It is terrible, and a waste of the plastic it was made from.

Buyer beware!

4.0 out of 5 stars Innocence and heroism makes a comeback., Oct. 25 2007
Superman II was always confusing for me, as a fan of the Superman Mythos. It seemed too corny, and threw in powers that Superman just shouldn't have. The Richard Donner cut helps to clarify and restore what should have been. The story seems tighter and less cluttered. Changes in the angles from the Lester cut give more weight to the emotions involved. The restoration of the late Marlon Brando's scenes are a sigh of relief. This is a much more serious film, but still lightened up with touches of humor.

The transfer to HD is spot on. Depth, clarity, color. All the elements for a great home theater showcase are here. The sound is sublime, and as good as it gets. When Supe and Zod and his cronies are ripping up Metropolis during their benchmark battle, you'll feel like ducking to avoid debris. It places you in the action. Makes you feel like you can soar.

The special features do a good job of letting you understand how this version came to be. They are informative, and engaging. My only complaint is that there were just too few of them.

The movie can feel a bit jarring at times. Especially when Donner includes a shot he only filmed during rehearsals. Overall, however, this film does a great job of restoring the vision of Richard Donner, and repairing the reputation of Metropolis City's favorite son.

I might have preferred an even darker vision, with a more serious tone, but the innocence of this franchise is to be revered. The heroic nature of this film is preserved and enhanced. I rate it a must own, must watch experience for the whole family, and kids of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reimagined and Bad to the Bone, Oct. 24 2007
This review is from: Hellboy: Sword of Storms (DVD)
Having never read but a few Hellboy comics, I had no preconceived notions on how Hellboy should be portrayed. What I got was a swaggeringly cool superhero that acts like a regular Joe, and fights a supernatural world of baddies.

Hellboy is very at home in this world. He himself is a creature of the underworld who has aligned himself with the fragile world of the humans. His assortment of allies are fleshed out and dimensional. Watching Hellboy: Sword of Storms feels like a piece of a greater movie without making the casual viewer fell left-out.

Thoroughly enjoyable for all fans of superheros, and kick-butt cartoons everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Somehow... I relate., Oct. 13 2007
Have you ever been stuck in a rut? Stuck in a dead end job? Tired of dealing with all those brain dead Zombies? Then this is the movie for you.

Shaun wakes up one day to find he's screwed up his life, lost his girlfriend, disappointed his mum, oh, and the world's been overrun by the Undead!

This movie is pure comic/horror genius from start to finish. A perfect Halloween treat.

The transfer to HD is top notch. This movie truly benefits from the image depth and clarity this format presents. With this much detail, I feel I could easily navigate through north London by the movie visuals alone.

The sound was simply excellent. Heavily dialog driven, every word comes through crisp and clear. When the action really heats up, the Zombie hoard feels like they are shuffling and groaning through your living room. (Darn Zombies. Always shambling through my living room. And I just vacuumed!)

The special features are all here, and highly fun to watch. It's clear this crew had a blast making this film, and all the extras are there to invite you along, and include you in on the joke.

Absolutely worth the purchase!
