Excellent book for animal lovers, April 22 2000
My preschool son is a real animal lover and I had been searching for a book like this for ages. It has photos of heaps of animals and not too much text, so is just right for younger kids. My little boy got it out of the library and wanted to take it everywhere with him, learn all the animals' names and draw them. I would highly recommend this book for any animal loving child.

Crazy book, Feb 2 2000
This book is wonderful, very funny and so imaginative. I recently read it to my 3 1/2 year old son, who sat captivated for more than an hour at a time. The story is completely mad, but that is the best thing about it. We loved reading about what happened to the four horrible children. A classic book which every child should read!

An enjoyable movie, but still a disappointment, Jan 7 2000
I think few people who, like me, had read the book by Pat Conroy would be satisfied with the movie version. On the positive side, it was well acted, well cast and the script did not stray too far from the novel. However, so much was left out that the power and drama of the novel were lost. Particularly disappointing was the fact that Luke and Savannah, two of the main characters in the book, barely featured in the movie. Focussing so much on the romance between Tom and Lowenstein, only a secondary storyline in the novel, may have made the story more straightforward but also more ordinary. Nick Nolte was great as Tom and I did enjoy the movie, but after reading the book and knowing what the film could have been I feel a bit disappointed. Probably this book would be better adapted for a mini-series, where more time could be allowed to develop all aspects of the story.

Wonderful wartime story, Dec 17 1999
This, along with "Anne of Green Gables", is my favourite Anne book. Rilla is a great character, quite unlike Anne and quite recognizable as a teenager, even if the historic setting is very different from today. As well as developing the characters of Rilla and her family and friends so strongly, this book provides a real insight into life for those left at home during the war. I cried and cried when Walter died, and over Dog Monday. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it is the last in the series.

Beautiful story, Dec 17 1999
I am a great fan of L M Montgomery and read this book several times in my teens. While I haven't seen it for several years, I would love to buy it and enjoy it again as an adult. "The Blue Castle" is definitely not a children's book. It is a beautiful novel, very funny and romantic, in an understated way. I love the character of Valancy and the transformation she goes through, and Barney Snaith is great too. This book shows a side of early 20th century life which isn't really shown in other L M Montgomery books. I didn't know anyone else who had read "The Blue Castle", it's cool to find out that so many others have.

One of my favourite books, Dec 15 1999
My sisters and I discovered this book years ago and loved it. One of my sisters virtually knows it off by heart! The chemistry between Cathy, Dev and Chris just jumps off the page, it gave me shivers. I have never read a book that deals with rape in this way. Liz Berry has managed to portray the people and surroundings in the book so vividly, I feel that I can see the characters and even Cathy's paintings! I only recently discovered that there is a sequel. I haven't seen it anywhere but intend to hunt it down. I am lucky that I found a copy of Easy Connections on a library discard shelf.

Loved this book, Dec 15 1999
I first read this book quite a few years ago, and I thought it was so good that when I finished it I read it again straight away. The characters seemed so real, and I loved the close relationships between the three brothers and the friends. This is a really short book so would be good for teenagers who don't like reading. Despite the cast of future big stars, the movie wasn't as good as the book. I have read all S.E. Hinton's later books and also enjoyed them.

Lovely story, Dec 15 1999
This would have to be my favourite of all the Little Bear, Big Bear stories. My three year old loved hearing about the adventurous little bear, and the relationship between the two bears is so lovingly drawn. I would definitely recommend this book.

Just right for toddlers, Dec 15 1999
We discovered this story in a large compilation book I bought just as my son was beginning toilet training. This story immediately became his favourite and he asked for it over and over, able to relate completely to the little princess' ups and downs with toilet training, and her eventual little accident on the floor. The sense of humour is exactly right for two and three year olds and our big story book is still known as "the potty book".

One of the best by Dr Seuss, Dec 15 1999
I bought this book for myself as an adult, I just loved the crazy rhymes and drawings. Some of the pages in particular really grab the imagination, like the wacky Seuss house with the bathroom up there and the bedroom up here. I'd love to have my own Dr Seuss-inspired home! The rhymes in Dr Seuss' books are always spot-on, it really is poetry. Now that my son is three, he can appreciate "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think" with me. Overall, one of my favourite picture books.
