Schools That Learn: A Fifth Discipline Fieldbook for Educators, Parents and Everyone Who Cares About Education
Schools That Learn: A Fifth Discipline Fieldbook for Educators, Parents and Everyone Who Cares About Education
by Peter M. Senge
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 34.65

5.0 out of 5 stars Length appeared overwhelming--but well worth it, Mar 13 2004
Having been given the instructions to select a book of vision for a reading group in a graduate class, I didn't expect to choose one of over 500 pages. The length, however, is indicative of the power this book has for changing minds about schools and the way to structure them for learning. I found myself often reading passages aloud to other educators and anyone who would listen. Instead of stifling my curiosity, the book inspired me to dig deeper on the five disciplines. A great book for creating a vision of education that includes schools where students are learning. I may purchase another one to loan out!

Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith
Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest and moving description of faith and grace., Dec 16 2003
Anne Lamott speaks to my heart, soul, and beliefs as she talks of becoming and remaining a Christian. I began this book on a day when the hairs of my soul were rubbed backward. As I read her words, my heart was soothed as I was reminded of what truly is important. It is difficult to remain a liberal, intellectual Christian at times. Lamott reminds us, in an irreverent way that I love, that we are in this boat together. The love of Jesus and our higher calling supersede all of the grumbling here below. The chapter on forgiveness and the "perfect mother" is one that I will turn to often when the feelings that I am in competition return.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone who finally gets it, Dec 7 2002
This review is from: Testing Miss Malarkey (Hardcover)
I purchased this book in preparation for a presentation on standardized testing. It definitely added some humor to the dull subject.

How amazing that a "children's" book can get the idiocy of high-stakes testing, but we in education can't do enough to lower the stakes.

A must for any educator trying to make the point of how silly the tests are--or anyone trying to lower the anxiety level just before test time.

I Don't Know How She Does It: The Life of Kate Reddy, Working Mother
I Don't Know How She Does It: The Life of Kate Reddy, Working Mother
by Allison Pearson

4.0 out of 5 stars I only thought I felt guilty for doing too much, Dec 6 2002
I was immediately swept into the book based on the fact that Kate was up in the wee hours trying to make bakery bought goodies look homemade. (As a Southern woman, I am more likely to be found dusting paprika onto the deli-bought potato salad, but the similarities were there.) I found that Allison Pearson could reach into the deepest fears I have as a working mother and do it with humor and understanding.

I found myself often chuckling and reading passages to my husband. He also chuckled.

This book is being purchased for women on my Christmas list.

I loved it--and look forward to an agent provacateur bra this holiday season.
