4.0 out of 5 stars Spy movie with calculating revenge as the focal point, Aug. 5 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It is a while since I first saw this movie, but as I watched realized why it was so memorable. The acting is very good and the plot reasonably good. It is an entertaining drama. If you have never seen it before, it has great suspense. Based on a novel by Ludlum and has Hopper, Hurt & Lancaster in leading roles. It is a stylistically an 80's movie- at the centre of the plot is the cold war with Russia; so it could be classified and typed-caste as a spy movie although it is more about revenge. Blu-ray format did not really add much quality to the movie- still quite grainy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shoot-em up Mexican Revolutionary Movie with superb acting..., July 28 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Set in the early 1900s in Mexico depicting the revolutionary conflict. It was a bit over the top but still credible for this genre of movie. The story is about as complex as you can get (or maybe want) for a western-style movie without making it ridiculous. The two main characters are unlikely comapadres, but it works on several levels. The flashbacks add another dimension to the film plot and character development. As a watcher it is hard to either relate to, or identify with either character- which really is strangely beneficial because it leaves the door open to unpredictable events & outcomes.

Another highly stylized Spaghetti Western largely filmed in Spain. It does not feel like Mexico but has that Spanish underpinning that gives it credibility. Leone is an expert at creating psychological drama especially with close-ups on the faces of the actors and uses added focus on the eyes to give greater depth to characters.

Overall I liked this movie.
There are moments of inertia but it is generally an action packed movie with good special effects for the period it was made. It was good that Clint Eastwood did not find his way into this movie- using Rod Steiger and James Coburn provided a fresh view of Leone's work and this character pairing is magical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Musical with good acting- good for all ages., July 25 2015

Not a high octane movie and really no sophisticated special effects- optimizes "less is more" concept. However a good solid musical and despite its age, weathers well. You will not be riveted to your seat, but the plot - such as it is- still sustains your interest. Great choreography and has a very talented cast. My first watch and I enjoyed every scene. Personification of animals with humanlike qualities is fantastic and you do not have to be an ozone ranger, vegetarian, or armchair naturalist to enjoy this movie which is excellent for all ages and personalities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie that sustains interest and good for intergenerational audiences.. if not a classic already, should be., July 24 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It is a wonderful movie with great acting and characterizations- refreshingly it is more sophisticated humour than most movies of this ilk... perfect in every way. My 7 year old grandson has fallen in love with it and recites lines and acts out the story, after only watching it once- obviously is a good watch for those wanting to watch suitable for an intergenerational audience. And, it could be viewed several times without being boring!

3 songs (2 versions of 1- Let Me Be Free). Expensive so value for money is questionable; however it is the quintessential 80's glam female rock song- in my opinion. Catchy song and beat!

2.0 out of 5 stars Described as "High Octane" - hmm, maybe, but not great execution., July 19 2015

The cinematography was fabulous, however; the plot was weak, the acting poor even from the normally strong performer, Bruce Willis. The special effects were just too simple and awkwardly incorporated into the storyline. At the beginning it seemed ponderously slow. I even fell asleep waiting the plot to get going.... there are much better films of this type of genre. I think rather than having this as part of my collection, I will pass it on to someone else; hopefully it will find a fan because I definitely am not one!

Very Impressive accomplishment- the soul of the songs really comes through on this album. Good job by the family, directors and producers... really displays Glen's gift as a musician. He is a remarkable person.

It shows remarkable resolve to produce this album with Glen obviously struggling with his affliction of Alzheimer's Disease. Unfortunately despite my sympathy and his still obvious wonderful musical talent, the album I think is vocally weak. Still, I admire his passion and tenacity.

4.0 out of 5 stars American Sniper- three intertwined plots make it a very intresting picture., July 4 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: American Sniper (Bilingual) (DVD)
Three intertwined plots which makes the film a bit disjointed. I understand why it would be produced that way, but it was not as seamless as I would like. That being said, the acting was great- the story is very compelling, real and hard hitting as well as heart wrenching. It shows the brutality of war. Even though it is based on the current conflict in Iraq you find yourself not seeing the contemporary conflict context (save for obvious advances in military technology) so much as a focus on the personal sacrifices soldiers and families made throughout history- this serves as an ever-present risk of exposure we all face. Interestingly, even though one sub plot is a sniper to sniper dramatic conflict, I was caught up on the impact of the carnage on many peoples lives-. The other plot revolves around the at home experience- a bit like "We Were Soldiers" (- a great movie)... but much more compelling and well rounded in this picture.

Whether you like the West being involved in Iraq or not, those soldiers face incredible risks and hardship (psychological and physical) to keep terrorism away from our shores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonamassa is brilliant- captivating music, July 4 2015

Live or not- Bonamassa is brilliant- captivating music.

He is a very accomplished musician. While having a distinctive rock/bluesy style he shows amazing diversity using some interesting and complex musical arrangements. He has played with the great guitarists (he is recognized as one too) in the world. I find his music is less soulful and pop; rather, more hard on rock for the most part. Each song takes you on a magical journey of its own- very unique and intriguing. This requires the listener to pay attention to his musicality. Sit back and listen and get absorbed; you will not be disappointed.
