5.0 out of 5 stars Technology can be comforting, Feb. 14 2015
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
I have only used this a few times on my back BUT it is a godsend! It is worth in terms of therapy more than it costs.
If you don't mind the twingling sensation of the electrical current, it's like having a masseuse in your home on call.

4.0 out of 5 stars Radical Common Sense, Feb. 14 2015
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
This book should be read in conjunction with Lovelock's book on Gaia. However, if read alone, this book is very radical as you read it but becomes common sense as you ponder it. Margulis proposes an alternative to traditional Darwinism in that evolution may have taken place by organisms cooperating with one another - to the point of creating new organisms! It not only forces us to look anew at life on Earth but also our own political and economic structures that might do well by cooperating and merging rather than competing and destroying one another. Survival of the fittest may be those who can get along with one another.

4.0 out of 5 stars A challenging thesis, Feb. 14 2015
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
The idea that Lovelock raises is somewhat dated now but it is still not well received by many, including the scientific community. However, if Lovelock is wrong, then how is the Earth regulated in order to keep life constant, even in the face of many extinctions? Even, in the end, you don't agree with him, the book is well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars a primer in fly fishing, Nov. 29 2014
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
This is an interesting book on many levels.
It is about fly fishing in England in the 17th century.
It is about the lifestyle of a gentleman in this days.
It is somewhat about theology.
It might be a polemic regarding Cromwell and the Puritans.
The language of the times might be a problem for some.
It does make you want to go fishing though....

5.0 out of 5 stars Canadian Heroes at war, Nov. 28 2014
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
An historical recounting of an amazing group of soldiers
in the War of 1812 whose march in the dead of winter
from Fredericton to Kingston to stand off an American
attack on Lake Ontario is little known, under appreciated
but should be better understood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Know your history!, Nov. 28 2014
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
I live in New Brunswick and this makes the War of 1812
accessible to the present generation in ways that show
the character and determination of the people of this
province to stop the advances of the US - as well as
their loyalty to the Crown for the second time in less
than 40 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars CANADIAN history, June 12 2014
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
If you hear about the War of 1812, it's usually from a US POV.
Well, the British fought the US in that one - and it was the
Canadians and the First Nations that helped the Brits WIN it!
I say that because the objectives that the US started the war over
were never reached - therefore, they lost.
Mostly, it was a stalemate but Canada defended itself and became a nation
asa result. The real losers were the Native Peoples (once again) as
they lost land and were never even considered in the negotiations.

3.0 out of 5 stars FX trumps storyline, June 12 2014
Achat vérifié(Quest-ce que cest?)
Peter jackson has made billions from the LotR trilogy and now the Hobbit trilogy.
Trouble is, special effects seem more important than Tolkien's words and images.
It's way too long and too violent.
I didn't like the first one and I doubt if I'll like the third one.

Cadfael is your typical British detective except that he is in the 12th century.
It's usually about murder and intrigue but he works it out in the end.
An interesting sidebar is how religion is dealt with: Cadfael is always about
love and forgiveness while the Church is about rules and doctrine.
