A compelling, thoroughly researched account of the events of 20 April 1999 at Columbine High School. I cannot recommend this book highly enough if you have even a smidgen curiosity or interest in the topic. Even if you're simply a fan of solid research and how the media 'runs' with a chosen narrative without the facts. 'Where Men Win Glory' by Jon Krakauer is another terrific example of the last point.

Dave Cullen is a heck of a journalist and writer, I'd love to read something else by him.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, written, unklikable characters, April 16 2011
This review is from: Freedom (Hardcover)
Freedom is very well written. Jonathan Franzen is obviously a talented writer. Having said that, none of the characters in the book were remotely likable for me. I have not read his previous novel (The Corrections, if I'm not mistaken), but I recall a relative of mine saying the same thing regarding the central characters. It can be hard to 'stick' with a book so lengthy when you dislike the people who's tribulations you're reading about. Mr. Franzen's talent kept me aboard. I finished the book, appreciated that it's a good one, and happily left the characters behind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horrifying, Nov 5 2010
I found this to be a terrifying novel. I read this book a few years ago, and there are scenes described in it that I will never forget. Many people will say this book inspires debate on nature vs nuture in developing someone's character. While in general I believe this to be true, there was no question for me that the evil that is Kevin was due to 'nature' alone. No one, his mother least of all, made him this. The last bit, as the nature of Eva's communications with her husband are revealed was, as my title says, horrifying. Great read, it shook me to my core.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Nov 5 2010

What a great read. I don't really see how anyone could have trouble following the narration. The story unwinds beautifully; Small reveal by small reveal. No big, overdone dramatic moments, no one dimensional 'bad' characters. Despite the title, this is Amanda's story. I alternately despised and felt enormous sympathy for her. I was sorry to see it end. It's been awhile since I really enjoyed a solid novel. The House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubuis III comes to mind.
