5.0 out of 5 stars interesting anecdote, Dec 30 2003
The movie is awesome. An interesting story that Tony Harvey tells in the commentary for The Lion In Winter is how he cut Dr. Strangelove while on a boat to Australia during the Cuban missle crisis. Ironic that.

5.0 out of 5 stars true to the Kleist--in spirit and text, June 2 2002
This review is from: Marquise of O (DVD)
Kleist's writing interests me because of the frailties and strengths of his characters. Is it possible to save a woman from rape, rape her yourself, seek to hide what you've done and to make ammends, and in the end still be something like a decent person? Maybe. Do good people do bad things? Yes. Is not a certain willingness to forgive weakness necessary between humans? Certainly.
Rohmer captures the feeling Kleist's story beautifully. He is careful to show the strengths of the women, they aren't passive and dominated within a patriarchal society--important in a film wherein the leading man commits rape, and the leading woman eventually forgives him.

5.0 out of 5 stars the convolutions of young love, June 2 2002
Thoroughly enjoyable. Though I found the "I've learned nothing" ending a little difficult, but probably realistic. The characters are interesting and engaging, and in the case of Margot, enchanting. Though we may not have all experienced exactly these circumstances, the youthful difficulties of sorting out love and attachment ring true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Horrific, June 2 2002
Though the movie does not dwell excessively on the pain of the 50,000 people who twice anually must trek for 48 days in order to survive, the horrors of such a journey cannot be ignored. The movie is a beautiful account of the lives of humans in the harshest of conditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars must see--really, May 30 2002
Do you think war is waged by mad men? No Man's Land shows how the reasonable actions of generally decent men can result in atrocity. The plot is a mirror of the larger events of the Bosnian-Serb war and the impotence of the UN to curb the violence. A thoroughly gripping film that is human, funny, frustrating, and sad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie! Poor transfer., Nov. 27 2001
This review is from: Maborosi (Widescreen) (DVD)
I'm very enthusiastic about this movie (see my earlier review), however it should be noted that the quality of the print is extremely poor. The movie was transferred to tape and subtitled for release in the U.S. and unfortunately the DVD was taken from this low quality tape transfer rather than being printed from the film. If a better print were released in the U.S. I'd rush to buy it. How about it Criterion Collection?

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet, Melancholy, Introspective, Aug. 7 2001
This review is from: Maborosi (Widescreen) (DVD)
With a bare minimum of action, dialogue, or even plot Koreeda reveals the delicacy and complexity of his characer's natures. It is particularly moving to watch tenderness and intimacy develop even in an apparently arranged marriage and through the unresolved grief of an incomprehensible suicide. But the grief is the focus of the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, Aug. 7 2001
The Lion In Winter is primarily the story of a family that is rotten from within, though still bound by ties of love and attachment that none of them seem wholly able to shake, hard as they try. As noted by other reviewers this movie demands that you pay attention or you'll miss the frequent twists as the characters plot, bluff, attack, and counter-attack. I would not, however, say that it is an inaccessible film. Just dont expect it to be Titanic. Many will recognize that as a compliment.

3.0 out of 5 stars My wife really loved it, Aug. 7 2001
I thought it was pretty good. The cinematography is gorgeous, of course, and the strangness of the battles half on ground and half in the air is intriguing, but ultimately I had a hard time becoming involved with the characters. My wife didn't have that problem. Maybe this is a martial arts chick-flick. It's time they made one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have, Aug. 7 2001
Lawrence of Arabia is one of the finest films ever made. I know that sounds obsessive, excessive, and cultish, but it's true anyway. If you've never seen it and feel a little put off by it being an old movie or a long movie, dont worry, you'll enjoy it. It's an easy movie to like. But it also has an incredible amount of depth to examine closer and closer on each viewing. You just may end up watching it 5 or 6 times in as many months.
