5.0 out of 5 stars ROMEO MUST DIE DVD REVIEW: Very cool!, Aug 10 2000
This review is from: Romeo Must Die (Widescreen) (DVD)
When I heard that Jet Li was going to be a lead in an action movie produced by Joel Silver, I was very excited. Before I give a review, I'm not biased to Jet Li because our crew interviewed him and promoted his movie online. I'm not biased to liking this movie because I have been a big fan of his work. I loved this movie because it features wonderful action scenes, an interesting focus on using the African Americans and Asians working together and it features a lot of cool people in the movie.

The storyline is pretty cool and purists of Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat are going to be angry at the US movies because such movies don't do justice to what talent they have demonstrated on the HK movies they have been in and I truly understand that.

Another thing is people might feel the MATRIX style fighting hurts this movie. I don't think so. Personally, some fight scenes are a exaggerated and I agree with that but a lot of the other fight scenes are very awesome such as the scenes in the stairs, the football scene, the fire hose scene...awesome!

Others maybe upset that the interracial relationship was not strong enough and were upset there was no kiss scene between Alliyah and Jet. We asked Jet about that and he said that in the end (without spoiling the movie for you), after a bad situation happens to a family member, should you be kissing a girl you just met. So, Jet had a good reason for that. [Note: You can our interview with Jet Li at AsianConnections.com]

So, however you felt about the movie, to each their own. I really enjoyed it! In fact, at the theater in San Jose/Santa Clara, it was packed and people gave it a standing ovation. I'm happy to see Jet's first debut in a lead role for an English movie.

What didn't I like about the film? I didn't dig the use of the X-RAY scenes in the violent parts. That was the major thing I didn't like but everything else, I enjoyed.

Now, the DVD. The colors were very beautiful for this movie. I don't recall any major artifacting. The audio for the film is very good as well but what makes this DVD shine is the special features. Not only do you get the regular trailer, the international trailer but you get two Alliyah music videos, the making of the music video "Try Again", you get many short documentaries, the HBO featurette and the behind-the-scenes vignette. The insights to how the film was filmed is so interesting, if you are a Jet Li or Alliyah fan, the extras are also a major reason to buy this DVD. Really interesting information from each actor and from those who worked behind-the-scenes. So, the DVD will definitely keep you busy for awhile.

So, you can't go wrong with this DVD. Very cool!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sailor Moon R DVD Review: A good reason to buy the DVD ver., Aug 6 2000
This review is from: Sailor Moon R the Movie (DVD)
I have been an avid watcher of the "Sailor Moon" series for a long time now and I just had to check out the DVD version of the series which includes the Japanese uncut edition which I was happy about.

I must admit that I liked the dubbed version that was on TV but when watching this DVD, I didn't care for the dub...because Sailor Moon is much enjoyable watching it in Japanese with the subtitles (if you don't understand Japanese that is).

So, that out of the way, let's talk about the movie. The movie is actually pretty good. Touching in some areas and it'll maybe make you want to cry. When people buy this, they may think they can just buy this for their kids but if you want to explain to your children about homosexuality references and so forth, then go ahead and buy it.

The only disappointing thing for me is the sound. Why is the movie done in mono? Oh well...

The special features features the image gallery and character information which is something that should be on most if not all anime DVD's with a large character cast. I am glad they included both languages for the purists and the dub fans.

Check out Sailor Moon R, you'll most likely dig it!

1.0 out of 5 stars The Enforcer DVD Review: What did they do to this movie?, July 24 2000
I remember when I first saw this movie (subtitled) and I really enjoyed it a lot. I really enjoy Jet Li films but since I already have the movie, why would I buy this version? Well, due to Jet Li's popularity, I wanted to see what Dimension Films had up their sleeve. I just had to checked out how a dubbed Jet Li movie would be. Now, all I can say to Dimension is... Please add the original language version with English subtitles.

The first strike was the lack of features and the second major strike is the lack of the HK soundtrack and only released dubbed. Sure, I could buy the Tai Seng version but this was upsetting because I am not a big dubbed fan but then again, I have seen a few good dubs in my life and possibly, this movie might be one of them....wrong.

This really cool movie was replaced by horrendous dubbing, a bad transfer where you can see the film scratches and the DVD has no major extras. I'm just lucky to hear the 5.1 surround.

I could still watch through the movie and enjoy it but I like the movie and the storyline. Why they changed the name to "The Enforcer", I don't know. Maybe they felt, "My Father, The Hero" was weak...not sure.

So, if you had to buy a certain version, spend a little more for the Tai Seng version of this movie. This movie deserves to be watched in its original Chinese language and if you can't understand it, watch it with English subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars GO DVD REVIEW: Entertaining, funny and very interesting!, July 24 2000
This review is from: Go (DVD)
Before I started watching this movie, I heard so much hype of how cool this movie is. I was watching a movie directed by a friend called "Yellow" and people described it as the Asian version of "GO". Well, I enjoyed "Yellow" thus I had to check out this movie called "GO" which many people have been raving about. I was impressed!

At first I didn't know what to think about it. I thought it was OK in the first 30 minutes and then next thing you know, it got better. I liked how there were different storylines which were all connected and it was pretty cool.

As for the video, the colors were nice and colorful. I don't recall major artifacts. As for the sound, since it's a dialogue movie, not much sound effects but the music is was is utilized the most. Really good music in this film.

As for the special features in this movie, I was impressed how many deleted scenes were included in this DVD. I wonder why some of them were taken out but I still have to watch the director's commentary on that. Also, cool music videos were included especially the popular Len music video. The featurette was also cool to watch.

The movie was pretty good. A good opportunity to sit back and watch young actors go to raves, experiment with drugs and alcohol and have some fun while some face certain consequences. Very entertaining with the variety of characters in this movie. Check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars RONIN DVD REVIEW: Riveting but special features....where?, July 24 2000
This movie is known as one of the best car-chase movies ever! I agree! This movie is known to be expensive to create and you'll be at the edge of your seat from beginning to end. It's that cool!

De Niro and the others were great in the movie. I was just really hypnotized by the action. The audio was digital 5.1 and some areas sound real good. Especially the engine rev's! The color was pretty good as well. If there was any problem with the movie, I saw some editing cut-to-scene problems like four or five times.

In the extra's department, this is where this DVD is lacking. It comes with a commentary and also an alternate ending. An ending that I'm glad was not included in the movie. But that's it....no trailer, no deleted scenes (aside the ending) and we are left with an awesome movie missing some really cool stuff that should be there...

Oh well....the movie is definitely worth getting on DVD. The color and sounds are brilliant. The store is riveting and I'm really impressed. If you want to own a movie with the best car chase scene ever (some say "Corruptor" has a great car scene chase), then check out "Ronin".

5.0 out of 5 stars Chasing Amy DVD Review: Very cool!, July 24 2000
I have to admit that I didn't really understand the hype about Kevin Smith's first movie "CLERKS" aside it being low-budget and unique, the storyline didn't appeal to me. But after watching his fourth movie, "DOGMA", I had to check out the other movies he has done and his third movie, "CHASING AMY" is quite intriguing.

I must admit that at first I didn't know what to expect from Kevin Smith in this movie but after seeing the performances between Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams, all I can say is powerful.

I've read that this movie was low-budget ($200,000) to make, I think Kevin Smith and crew did a great job! I was impressed they had a digital 5.1 soundtrack and the video had certain spots especially during the end of the rain scene and afterwards but again, this is a low-budget movie and I'm not going to hold them on that. This is a very awesome movie and I have more respect for Smith and his work now. Awesome!

As for the extras on this DVD, this is a CRITERION COLLECTION and it has a lot of extras. But the extras are from the Laserdisc version. In fact, the introduction included on this DVD is Smith addressing a certain quote on the beginning commentary of the movie regarding DVD on the LD commentary. So, since I don't own the LD, I'm not disappointed, although others maybe. What I enjoyed about this movie aside from the deleted scenes and the powerful acting is the commentary. Very fun stuff from the guys this time and you can hear them! Something I bitched about on the CLERKS DVD.

What I like about this DVD is that it covers something that I don't see in other movies, how to deal with a relationship with someone who has had certain sexual situations in the past.

An interesting movie! Check it out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ninja Cadets DVD Review: 2 OAV's...that's it? We want more!, July 24 2000
This review is from: Ninja Cadets [Import] (DVD)
Ninja Cadets! aka "Ninja Mono" in Japan is a story that combines the sword busting of Ninja Scroll with the wackiness of Tenchi Muyou. My only problem with this DVD is that there are only two OAV's and that there will be no more OAV's afterwards. In other words, you are left with a storyline that begs to have more afterwards. You watch and enjoy the anime but are left saying...I want to watch more!...but for now, there are no plans for more.

As for the video, the quality is really colorful and the video, I'm guessing is only stereo because I didn't notice anything major ala 5.1.

The extras are pretty interesting with about 11 trailers to other Media-Blasters anime releases and the outtakes are very fun to watch. Also, a 5-minute art gallery. I hope Media-Blasters adds them to all their DVD's. My only problem is the dubbed voice when you enter each menu. It's very childlike and it's obviously the voice for Sakura but I felt I was going to watch a children's animation and this anime is far from that.

I'm glad they offered the series both in dub and in original Japanese with English subtitles for us purists.

A good DVD but disappointed that the story ended like it did with no future episodes planned at this time.

3.0 out of 5 stars POCAHONTAS DVD REVIEW: What happened to the video???, July 4 2000
This review is from: Pocahontas (Widescreen) (DVD)
I suppose this movie has a more meaning for me due to a past romance and the this to be the movie we shared, so I enjoyed it. Sure, Disney knows how to take some part of history and make it so fictional but one of the things I like about this movie is the detail they put into Pocahontas facial expressions. That feature always caught me.

Anyway, you either like the animation or you don't. The audio is very well done. No major sound effects but the music and the dialogue is the main things for this film. What about the video? The video is a shock. Where Tarzan bursts with a radiance of colors, not Pocahontas. What happened during the transfer? It's like a transfer from a video tape seen 10 times before. Not acceptable with a DVD! I can't believe the colors aren't superb.

Extras...well, I guess after the fans were upset that Disney didn't include any extras in their previous releases, now they are with their "Gold Collections". I like how the DVD has the two music videos especially "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams. There are a lot of trailers before the movies which you can fortunately skip over, a trivia game and DVD storybook like the Tarzan DVD and a fun with nature booklet which they should of added to the DVD. Otherwise it's better than what we got before from older Disney DVD's. So, we have the movie at above average, the special features in the C to C- range and the DVD Overall probably a B-/C+.

Otherwise, for a DVD from Disney, this movie deserved better. A better video transfer and they could at least added the making of Pocahontas or something. (sigh)...

Anyway, if you want to watch Pocahontas, get the DVD version. Even those it's VHS quality, you get those extras and good sound. If you don't care about the extras and just want to see the movie, then the VHS might be your thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars gen-X-cops DVD Review: Absolutely Awesome!, Jun 25 2000
This review is from: Gen:X Cops (DVD)
Absolutely awesome! This is how I felt about "Gen-XCops". A story about three rebellious generation-x cops hired toinfiltrate the underworld. I recall several director's discussing about the current situation of HK films and how there is not enough originality and they tend to copy or redo something that was popular on many other films.

Gen-X Cops is different. Police Academy this is not. You get three talented young no-named actors who really kick ass in this film. Notably Nicholas Tse who plays the character of Jack. In the featurette included in the DVD, Jackie Chan even gives respect to the man because he also does his own stunts. There is one scene where he comes out of a swimming pool with gasoline on top of the pool on fire and he emerges out of the pool. These are just a few scenes that you see Nicholas Tse do. Pretty boy? This guy is not afraid to take on risks and this person is definitely a rising star to keep your eye on.

One of the things that makes this movie rock is the dedication of the director Benny Chan (Big Bullet, Who am I?). Although he admits that it was difficult to film the movie because the three gen-x actors loved to play around the set and are loud, he knew that was the chemistry that made these guys click and the way the movie turned out, he definitely clicked with them.

Sam Lee who plays the character of Alien is so weird and very funny, you can't help but like his character. Then there is the "playboy" Stephen Fung who plays the character of Match. According to Tse, a person playing himself...a playboy. These guys get along so well and are a perfect click which makes this movie even more enjoyable. One scene has the three friends outrunning blasts in a building. A scene that they can only shoot once with no mistakes. The only time the three were ever quiet on the set according to Chan.

The movie also features our favorite gangster guy, Francis Ng who is a great gangster guy in movies such as "Young and Dangerous" and comedy movies such as "Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Star". It was a pleasure to see him in this movie as Lok.

You'll notice that three languages are used in this movie (Btw, I watched it in Cantonese in English subtitles, I'm not into dubbed in English movies): Cantonese, English and Japanese. The Japanese star in this film is Toru Nakamura. Popular for his awesome work in Japanese dramas such as "Nemureru Mori" (The Sleeping Forest) and "Ko-ri no Sekai" (The Ice World). He speaks in English and in Japanese in this movie but I think it was pretty cool they included him in this movie trying to attract Japanese viewers. In this movie he plays Akatora. The bad guy! For those who followed his works, he can definitely play a hardcore bad guy! The man is definitely a talented actor.

It was also a pleasure to watch Grace Yip who plays Y2K and the introduction of model, Jaymee Ong (who plays the character, Haze) of Australia. Last, you can watch the special cameo of martial arts star, Jackie Chan.

It also helps that you have people involved in this movie such as the special effects team that blew up the White House on Independence Day and a professional aerial team who worked with Chan to make one hell of a movie.

Some people might get upset about the use of English. It's not the best and if you watch a Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat American movie, you are either used to it or your a person that moans about the English. Just sit down and watch the movie without zoning in on the language, let the story and the action be the main thing you are watching this movie for. I'm sure this movie was expensive to make as well and Gen-X Cops in my opinion has a much more of an interesting storyline.

I think one of the reason why I like this movie is because I can identify with the three actors and I like how hip this movie really is.

The video quality in the film is pretty good and I was happy top see the widescreen version done anamorphically! YES! Also, the sound is presented in 5.1 (Cantonese and also in additional languages) and trust me, it was a great experience to hear those sounds from all sides of the room.

Are there many extras on this DVD? At first, I quickly glanced at the menu before the movie and I said to myself...probably not. I was wrong! After enjoying the movie so much, I then checked out the extras included on the DVD. Bare in mind it was 10:30 p.m. when I finished the movie. It was cool to see the trailers but then I watched the deleted scenes and oh my! It's about 40 minutes long? Well, ok...it's mixed with parts of the film, so I guesstimate that it was 30 or so minutes of extra footage. Most movies with deleted scenes are about 5-10 minutes long or even shorter. It was a pleasure to see the extra scenes. Some I felt would have been nice for the movie but I wish there was a director's commentary to explain why he took it out...but what the heck, they jammed some scenes into this deleted scenes segment already. Very cool to watch!

Now, it's almost 11:30, I have yet to watch the making-of documentary. This one was pretty long and it was very...I mean VERY awesome! You actually get to see Nicholas Tse perform those risky scenes and you also get to see/hear the comments by the director and by others of each other. Also, a comment at the party by Jackie Chan who says something about Nicholas Tse. Overall, the extras are pretty damn good! To end the documentary, you get the music video performed by Tse, Fung and Lee.

It's almost 1 a.m. now and I'm just pumped up! This movie was very awesome! It was definitely much more than I expected. Also, it is pretty cool to see a DVD out in department stores with Asians on the front cover. I hope Media Asia Films releases another DVD and I can't wait for Gen-X Cops II.

This DVD is highly recommended for action movie viewers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clerks DVD Review: A very entertaining movie, the DVD..., Jun 25 2000
This review is from: Clerks: Collector's Series (DVD)
I saw this movie as a recommendation as one of the best written comedy/movies of the all time.

Well, I wouldn't say it's one of the best but it's pretty good. First, hats off to Kevin Smith for the unique perspective of a movie about clerks. Also, a hats off to the actors because I don't know if regular actors can do something like this. These actors are a lot more believable than say if you get big name actors to play the characters parts. Last, hats off for making an entertaining movie without the big budget.

That's where "Clerks" is a winner. It's not big-budgeted, you get non major names to play roles. The acting is not top notch but they look as if they do fit those parts. The more believable these actors are to their characters, the more humorous the movie was for me.

As for quality video and audio, this was a low budget movie, so I wasn't going to expect any major video/audio at all. As for the special features, the audio commentary was funny but terrible in a way that you can't really hear the actors speak. It's like one microphone was being used. This was a big minus for the DVD. Why put it in there if you can't hear it that well. The alternate ending was a shock and it's very good they didn't include it in the final release. It would of made the movie very depressing. The Soul Asylum music video rocked and how it stays with the "Clerks" theme made watching the music video that much more enjoyable. If there was anything very negative about this DVD, it's that this DVD continues to be one of the most expensive ones out there. Otherwise, thank God for DVD coupons.

So, if you want to see a fun movie, "Clerks" will definitely make you laugh.
