Enchanting music!, April 10 2004
I listen to a lot of 70s and 80s stuff and until recently knew about A Flock of Seagulls only through their hit song... "I Ran". I decided to buy this CD and was absolutely stunned by their music. Their songs, including the aforementioned, are an amazing mix of space age rock and synth. I particularly liked "Telecommunication" (which has a strange start but has a groovy beat to it), "The More You Live, The More You Love" (a fabulous song, as well as the extended version). "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)" is another classic song...a lovely catchy tune that is hard to forget and I just can't get enough of it. It is not uncommon that groups as these still have a following after all these years. The 70s and 80s saw a lot of great music rolled out and some of the greatest bands to ever take the spotlight. Unfortunately, it is not the case these days. The talent seems to concentrate more on how shocking a video can be or how much skin one can show or how well a one can dance. How well one can sing or compose music is not so much of a criteria. And that saddens me. I doubt the songs rolled out today will ever be remembered 20 years hence. Thus, it is not surprising to see bands as Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Dire Straits, Phil Collins, The Eagles, A-ha, U2, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and the like still having a solid and faithful fan following. These were the groups that did all the hard work themselves, from writing their own music to playing the instruments and experimenting with different tunes, and most continue to do so even today. Sadly, in my opinion, the only experimenting today's groups do is with shock value.

Charming!, Jan 12 2004
This is one of the most spectacular classic British comedies and a must-have for any Carry On fan. It is, however, unfortunate that all the Carry On moviess have not yet been released in the US in DVD format. I certainly hope they do bring them out soon. The rest of the Carry On collection (starting from where this box set left) is available in UK.This box set contains the first 12 Carry Ons that were made and a 13th one made as a tribute to all the Carry Ons (That's Carry On). It is needless to say that the cast and crew in them were always spectacular and outrageously hilarious. Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Kenneth Connor, Jim Dale, Joan Sims all gave stellar performances in each Carry On. It is rather sad to face the fact that most of this crew is no longer with us. There are few who come close to the facial expressions of Kenneth Williams, his famous flaring nostrils, and his manner of speech, Sid James' famous yak-yak and Charles Hawtrey's "Oh-Hello's" and silly grins, not to mention their extremely natural and hilarious acting. Most of them were talented actors from a very young age. On the bright side, it is good to know that some of them like Barbara Windsor and Jim Dale are still carrying on in the entertainment world. For all Carry On fans wanting to know more about the lives of these actors and detailed description on each film, there is www.carryonline.com and there are books on the lives of Sid James, Kenneth Williams (who was a very private and a sad man in real life) and others. Truly, it is hard to carry on living till the rest of the Carry Ons are released in the US on DVD.

Good source for MO beginners, could have been better, Sep 11 2003
I am currently learning ESRI MapObjects 2, and was recommended this book as it was quite tough to really understand the vast object model of MapObjects 2 through the samples alone. This book gives quite a good explanation of the MapObjects 2 object model. However, be warned of a few things - Some of the explanations are terse and you wish the author spent some more time to explain them. Also, there are some mistakes in the code printed in the book (I prefer typing down the code to learn rather than looking at it on the CDROM). For the intermediate level VB programmers, there are better ways to code some parts of a project than mentioned in the book. For example, in Chapter 5, where the author uses a cumbersome method to split a filename - something that can be done in 3 single lines. A final thing I disliked was the editing/format of the print. It would be a lot better to print the code in a better manner (to make it really apart from the rest of the text), and also the indenting and spacing between lines in the code. The code looks like one long sentence in some places, making it a little difficult to read. Otherwise this book is a good source, and something that you will want to refer to while coding MapObjects - but do not blindly follow the bad coding habits, try to use your knowledge to accomplish the task in a better way once you have understood the MapObjects model.

An excellent book for VB 6 beginners!, Jan 16 2003
This is an extremely well written book. Peter Wright has this way of writing that keeps you hooked on to the book. There is a sense of humor which helps. The book explains the topics in quite good detail with screen shots so that one won't get lost! The examples are bug-free and work fine. The chapter on objects and classes, though short gives quite a clear idea of object oriented programming and how VB handles it.The only hitch I found was that Chapter 12 onwards, the book gets a little too fast and some things are explained very tersely. Moreover, there are quite a lot of grammatical errors in Chapter 13 that ruin the train of thought and are irritating! It's as though the editors didn't go through the last few chapters very well. Overall, a very good book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of VB 6.

Major A-ha | Major DVD, Dec 15 2002
Coming out with a DVD of their historical come-back concert is one of the second best things since a-ha were formed in the 80s. This DVD is wonderfully edited and contains a lot of additional stuff. What I really liked were the 4 videos from the MEMS album, the 7 year itch describing the things these guys did while they stayed apart, and the interview with the band members included in this DVD. I was thrilled to see the 'Dragonfly' video in the '7 year itch' section. It is a wonderful piece by Magne and I'm glad that I can watch it anytime. The concert is wonderful and I loved the way they played their songs and made them sound different yet as amazing and as entertaining as the originals! These guys have proved themselves to be a great live band. Seeing this DVD makes you crave for more of A-ha. You will want to watch this DVD time and again. I end up watching bits and pieces of it almost daily. I am glad its finally out in the USA and am waiting for them to release their latest stuff out here soon. I also wish they come up with more DVDs covering their latest Lifelines tour as well as a DVD containing all the videos they have made so far. Those would be great buys and cherished items!
