Very good, informative, and slightly scary read, Nov 29 2009
I love to learn about the history behind stuff. As a doctor, I think it's important to know where we've been in order to know where were going. And nutrition, which is too often forgotten about in day to day care, has a fascinating and occasionally gross history. We've taken for granted the great variety and access to food we now have. Not to mention all the regulatory bodies that ensure that we get the most unadulterated and untainted products as possible. This was not always the case. We've also forgotten about the ravages of malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. This book covers all of these subjects, the people who worked on the discoveries, the process of trial and error to get to these findings, etc. You will be amazed at the amount of time it took to figure these things out, the false/erroneous/downright dangerous views we had on the subject of eating, digestion, food handling, vitamin deficiencies, nutritional needs of children, etc. The writing is not boring, approaches it as though it was storytelling, and has all these interesting asides as footnotes to augment the story. I found it quite enthralling, and it these anecdotes make for great conversation. There are also pictures in the middle of the book. My only complaint is that the type is tiny but that means that the books lasts longer. I would recommend this book to anyone who's in the healthcare field, or food industry, or is something of a gourmand. Beware those with a sensitive stomach, there are some pretty disgusting descriptions (such as the amount of pus and blood that is in the milk you buy) and you will look at food differently.

Great movies, Nov 18 2007
I first watched Night Watch in some art house theater with 3 other people, after seeing the banner ads non-stop on nytimes.com for months on end. I remember thinking to myself while watching it the first time do I like this movie or not ? It's different from North American blockbusters yet uses a lot of its techniques to tell the story and wow you. Yet, it's different. Some stuff was lost on me or I didn't get, but I chalked it up for being lost in translation or just differing in cultures. But I came to the conclusion that I LOVED this movie and story. I even bought the books as soon as the translations were released in North America. The movies themselves are different, Daywatch having more production value and more bang for your buck. It was sometimes funny how over-the-top it was, but I imagine it must of looked cool on the big screen. I preferred Nightwatch, myself. So if you're into vampire stuff, and a bit of fantasy, and explosions, this is the movie for you. Also, make sure that you can watch in russian with the subtitles, so that way, you really get the full flavour of the storytelling.

Great for med students, April 27 2007
I'm a second year med student, and right in the middle of the GI block. This is a great book for PBL sessions and probably for 3rd year clinical rotations. The first part of the book describes approaches to various GI symptoms such as acute abdomen, bleeding, etc. Those chapters are accompanied with algorithms to aid you in your decision making. The second part describes various GI ailments. The writing is concise and comprehensible. They do quote some studies and research but not so much as so the message is lost in all the quoting. They explain tests, surgeries, mecanism of action for medications, and the rationale behind everything. The only thing I wish was in this book was a basic physiology section and some pictures, then it would be a really complete handbook, in my opinion. Otherwise, I will add this title to my collection of medical books because I think it will be useful for years to come.

Excellent for med students, April 1 2007
I've borrowed this book from the library to aid me in the study of ORL during Senses block. I thought that it was just right for my level of knowledge on the subject (which is virtually nil). I liked the fact that there were pictures, coz it's nice to see an example of what they're talking about. Although, if I have to give one criticism, they should adjust the contrast or make them in colour since it would make it a tad easier to see what they're trying to show. The writing is engaging, concise, and comprehensible. And everything is broken up into little chapters, which makes for an easy read. They also include a guide to examination and useful tips, all with pictures. There is even a section on the psychological causes of ORL problems ! I will buy this title to add to my personal library once I can scrape up the money because I think that this book will be useful for the future, especially as a GP. Also, the book's small format makes it a great pocket book that would be potentially useful for clinical placement. Enjoy !

Great for beginners, like me..., Mar 31 2007
I got this book for my birthday and I didn't even request it, and I must say, it is a GREAT book. I've fallen in love with vietnamese food, through pho and bun and banh mi, and this book contains all those recipes and more. It explains the history on this whole culinary world, and has detailed descriptions and pictures to help you identify ingredients and understand them. That way, you can go shopping with a little bit more ease and you'll have the vietnamese names available when you need the help. I was able to get the ingredients I needed when the shop lady couldn't understand what I wanted since I wrote the vietnamese names (accents and everything)of them and I just showed them to her. There are also tips and notes on techniques and substitutions. There is also explanations on how to eat and live this different culinary experience. I learned a ton of stuff. And everything is so easy and fresh, it's really nice and fun to do something new and not have to go to a restaurant for it. There's even a section on vietnamese charcuteries (cold cuts, if you will) so that you can make your own banh mi ! So if you love vietnamese food or are just curious, and you need something that will walk you through it and not frustrate the heck out of you, I reccommend this book. It should be part of every cookbook library.

Excellent book for the MSK bloc, Jan 5 2007
I kept this book in my bag for a straight 5 weeks during the MSK bloc for med school. Extensively used for problem-based learning. And it will be a book that I will be able to refer to for years. Small in size, it can be carried anywhere. Language was easy to understand, did not go over your head, and helped to make me feel more adequate with the subject matter. It wasn't too simple, but wasn't in too much detail either. It was really all you needed to know for a med student. I wouldn't buy anything else. Well worth its price.

There's nothing basic about this book., Nov 17 2006
I'm a medical student and I bought this for my endocrinology block. Now, I don't know if I'm just dense, but this book was way too much for my level. Considering I was starting from very little knowledge on the subject, this book did not do the job of introducing me easily to the subject. I think it's because of the way that it's written that makes it hard to assimilate and makes it appear pretty daunting. I didn't like the way everything was written, in paragraph and narrative form, with lots of notations. It felt more like reading a research paper, and wasn't straightforward enough for my tastes. So for a beginner, like me, this was not the right book. I guess it wasn't dumbed down enough for me and there weren't enough diagrams. And after the exam, the subject matter covered in the book was way too much for what we needed to know for our level. This might be good later on in your training if you're really into endocrinology. Now I'm not saying this is a bad book, it just wasn't right for me and I want to say buyer beware. Endocrinology at a Glance was way better for beginners. I hope this was helpful.

Do you need the basics ? The real ones ? This is for you !, Nov 16 2006
I'm a medical student who used this book extensively for the endocrinology block. And I must say for a subject I was having a hard time with, this book rocked my world ! Short, sweet, lots of diagrams (great if you're a visual learner), and included clinical examples. This book made the subject less overwhelming and I was able to participate in my classes way better thanks to it. Now keep in mind, it is the basics. But for the price, and for someone who didn't know much in endocrinology, this book was an excellent and smart buy. I cannot emphasize enough how great this book was. And I bought Basic and Clinical Endocrinology by Greenspan first and found it too overwhelming and complicated for my level. So do yourself a favour and save some tears and money, and buy this book first. I hope this was helpful.
