3.0 out of 5 stars Cronenberg's Homage to Burroughs, Aug. 6 2013
This review is from: Naked Lunch (DVD)
I just watched Naked Lunch for the first time on DVD, after seeing the original film away back. I finally figured out what it was all about, as I was a bit 'confused' following the original viewing. The cat is just 'halucinating', now I get-it! The only thing I don't like about the film is the homo-inferences. I realize you can't make a film about William Burroughs - and avoid these references, but I wish Cronenberg had been more discreet, or even eliminated this theme altogether. The film is apparently an amalgamation of all Burroughs writings, and Cronenberg admits to adding some of his 'own fiction' during the commentary track. Too bad he didn't take his fiction one-step further.
I never read Naked Lunch, and am not sure I'd ever want to. But I have read Burrough's book 'Junkie', and actually enjoyed it - as it focused mostly on drug addiction. Naked Lunch (film) has two counter-themes; Junk and homo-sex. Kind of limit's the audience-range. None of Cronenberg's other films have ever journeyed this far - left. A good film, but it could have been better - with a more sexual discretion. Just fade to black - to imply an act. Burrough's wife in the film - was hot. Too bad she got knocked-off early in the film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been 'Happening', May 31 2009
This review is from: The Happening (DVD)
An interesting theme, but the film should have been developed more. Knight seems to focus upon the mundane, everday-life, within his films. (almost a made-for-tv approach). His films appear to have a touch of a '19th century feel' to them. This remains okay, but when your trying to sell a film (and dvd) to an audience, the film has to include the same technological inovations which people endure in everyday life. Unless of course, your filming a historical film or documentary, which this film clearly is not.
Steven Spielburg could have had a 'field-day' with this premise. Knight should instead commune more with some 21st century producers. Knight should realize he now has the budget to exceed earlier 'high-school film project' concepts. Having said this, his direction and camera angles remain a distinct feature within his films. Still, no reason to look back at his earlier successful films - and not ahead to new ideas. Diversification is the key to a successful career in the arts. Life indeed moves in circles, and eventually he can return to his earlier film concepts. Instead, Knight should start reading sci-fi novels for future film concept ideas. Then take the time and budget, to invest in modern special effects, including CGI.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inside Rock Review, March 28 2009
I really don't like Metallica, and don't own any of their cd's. I am more into Hard Rock. Having said that, I enjoyed this film very much. It brought us right inside the recording studio, and we could see the various members recording their tracks individually. As a result, it focussed on individual musicianship, as well as their individual personalities. A cool film.

This is an epic live album release. Frank really lays his soul out on this 2-cd recording. Longtime fans will not be disappointed. Guitar Gurus will rave-on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Canadian origins, Nov. 27 2007
This review is from: A Bear Named Winnie (DVD)
Filmed entirely in Manitoba, Canada, this low-budget film concentrates on the original bear-cub Winnipeg (Winnie), which later ended up in a London, England, Zoo during WWI. This film focuses almost entirely upon the original Winnipeg Bear ('Winnie'), not the war, or A.A. Milne. Ten years later, in 1926, A.A. Milne visited the London Zoo, to create the now legendary, Winnie-the Pooh character.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow Gradually Moving Old Guys, Feb. 2 2007
This review is from: Space Cowboys (DVD)
This movie starts out at 2:12 minutes - and gradually builds to an interesting sci-fi cresendo. I say Science Fiction, because the film is a fiction - which is based around NASA, and outer-space. Besides, the special effects are pretty cool for the last 45 minutes. So lets call this, a social plot, gentle sci-fi film.

Actually, Clint Eastwood is clearly the best actor of the four stars. Afterall, Clint directed and Produced this effort. The film has some emotional moments - which inevitably draw the viewer in. It's a fiction, so I rode along with the implausability of it all, but the science element was intriguing. Worth a view, besides, Donald Sutherland wouldn't have enlisted in this film, if he didn't feel it had a fringe element.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uma Thurman......Purr., Jan. 26 2007
I found the dialogue in this film - quite dreary. On the other hand, I was infatuated with Uma Thurman in her cat-suit. Too bad the DVD Menu did not allow the viewer to watch this film - with the soundtrack only. Maybe in it's next dvd incarnation. Until then, watch this film with no volume - and turn up your stereo. It's a visual delight, only.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Phantom Crusader, Oct. 9 2006
The Phantom is a superhero based on a South Pacific Island circa 1930. His mission is to fight pirateering, greed, and crime. I found this film (metaphorically) represented todays modern world - quite acurately. A modern world which is marred with white-collar corporate crime; featuring politicians, manager-representatives, and everday street-charlatans, out to swindle his fellow (hu)man. The Phantom also commutes to NYC to follow a crime.

The film has many great action-sequences filmed in the South Pacific, where the Phantom resides. The scenery is breath-taking, and The Phantom truly is a super-action comic book hero. I enjoyed this film. The Phantom has a great moralistic side. He is indeed human afterall. He is a friend of nature, and all it's animal friends. He is also out to fight for justice, and protect honest hard-working folks. In other words, this film still resonates with a minority today. Folk's who honour collective values, and not primarily - the self. This film would appeal towards this branch of people, and probably most comic book fans in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Great Electric Blues Guitar", March 5 2006
This 48 minute disc is half live and half studio.
The playing here is extra-ordinary, as BJG is clearly influenced by Guitar Gods; Eric Clapton (Cream), SRV, and Elmore James. I mention these three, because BJG is not only a great picker, but also an awesome electric slide player as well. Where he stands out, is when he plays slide - while working the (Cry Baby) foot pedal. Not too many players incorporate this sound. An unheralded North American Guitar Hero - located north of the USA, but clearly influenced by the Chicago/Texas Blues Scene. Hopefully BJG's next cd - will be a full 80 minute live disc. Awesome talent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Film - which entertains, March 4 2006
This review is from: WarGames (Widescreen) (DVD)
This is an interesting drama, filmed in the mid-80's. It works, because it is suspenseful, and full of wonderful plausabilities, when one considers the intrigue introduced by computer hackers.
