5.0 out of 5 stars The must-have Blu-ray set for Batman fans..., Dec 28 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Before Director Christopher Nolan came around, the caped crusader had his fair share of lows over highs in his cinematic history. But by infusing a gritty, hyper-real approach to the masked superhero, Nolan and star Christian Bale effectively brought to life the definitive film interpretation of the crime-fighting character.

This set collects the three films, the opening act 'Batman Begins' - exploring Bruce Wayne's origins and motivations to becoming Batman in a crime-infested Gotham City, the masterpiece middle installment 'The Dark Knight' which pits Batman against an anarchist named The Joker (Academy Award-winner Heath Ledger), and the culminative 'The Dark Knight Rises' that finds Gotham City under siege from the terrorist Bane.

Each film is presented in glorious high-definition with pristine video and audio quality while 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' each have changing aspect ratios to reflect the use of IMAX cameras during the production. All the editions come with extensive hours on bonus content and the box even contains a special booklet that explores artwork and concepts from the films, including additional villains Catwoman, Scarecrow, Two-Face and Ra's Al Ghul.

A true Batman fan can't ignore adding this piece of greatness to a collection shelf, especially if you have not been buying the single editions already over the last few years. One can only hope this is truly not the end of Nolan's run on the franchise, but for now you can't go wrong with this quinessential trilogy edition on Blu-ray.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing taste of horror...in high-definition!, Nov. 9 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Two television shows currently on the air have brought back the horror genre to great heights in the medium. Along with 'The Walking Dead', 'American Horror Story' also deserves some serious credit. Twisted, bizarre, deviant, visceral and layered...these are all words one could used to describe the Season 1 experience on Blu-ray. Created by Ryan Murphy (Glee), AHS is a creepy and brillantly written self-contained anthology show that delivers a full experience beginning to end.

The first season surrounds a family that move into a vintage home in Los Angeles in an effort to save the bonds that have been nearly severed by traumatic and psychological issues. But the house contains a dark and malevolent history that soon becomes prominent in their lives, as it harbours the souls of any persons that died or were violently killed within its walls. These ghosts appear as living people in the residence, with the family none-the-wiser to their true existence. Can the family prevent becoming permanent household spirits as well?

AHS is a wickedly bloody and dramatic horror show that's backed up by a pretty credible cast, including a highlighting award-winning supporting role by Jessica Lange. But the hook is the show's incredible depth of mysterious mythology, especially as it pertains to the ghosts. For example, not only are they able to physically interact with the living, but on Halloween they are able to leave the confines of the house and venture into the world for one night only.

The Season 1 Blu-ray high-definition package is fairly impressive in its sleek 3-disc set. Picture quality is pristine in detail and vibrant on color, backed up by a strong DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track for your home speaker system. The set also contains some good extras including episode commentaries, a tour experience of the house and featurettes about the making of the show, the ghosts/characters and the crazy-cool opening title sequence.

Do yourself a favour, if you love horror and a fresh breath of creativeness into the genre, then check out American Horror Story. What do a rubber man, a demonic baby, and a half-burned homeless person have in common? They are all part of this extremely disturbed and unique show that is unlike anything else ever put to television or Blu-ray digital disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Batman movies...period, and it's only Part 1!, Nov. 7 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's held up as arguably the greatest Batman story every told in the comics. 'The Dark Knight Returns' is the definitive Batman story that resurged the character to new heights in the 1980's, executed by brilliant writer and artist Frank Miller (Sin City, 300). It paved the way for how the character is perceived today and served as the inspiration for Christopher Nolan's final Batman film 'The Dark Rises'.

Since a faithful adaptation will most likely never be made into a live-action film, Warner Animation and the team behind 'Batman: The Animated Series' plus animated adaptations like 'Batman: Year One' and 'Batman: Under The Hood', hit another home run by splitting the four-issue series into two films and executing it almost flawlessly. The story is set in a future Gotham City that has found Batman out of action for roughly ten years. But with crime at an all-time high and a Mutant gang problem abounding, an older Bruce Wayne begins to feel again that familiar calling that haunted him since he witnessed his parent's murder.

Thus, Batman is reborn. Meaner and grittier than ever before, but weathered because of so many years on the shelf. But he's not the only one back on the scene. A supposedly rehabilitated Harvey Dent reverts back into Two-Face mode and holds the city for ransom, plus the Mutant gang leader wants Batman's head on a plate. What is a Dark Knight to do? Bust some heads and get back into the game, that's what.

What makes this animated film such a winner is that it is extremely faithful to the source material and captures Miller's tone and themes perfectly, whether it's Bruce's psyche or the satirical take on politics and media. Everything that fans love about Batman's methods and style is captured beautifully here, backed up by a great voiceover by Peter Weller (Robocop). The action is great, the depth is stellar, and Part 1 of this film puts the recent 'The Dark Knight Rises' to shame on substance.

Miller's artistic style is tranfered nicely in a great animation design and flow. With that said the visual presentation of the high-definition Blu-ray is pretty sweet, but the DTS-HD sound mode audio track is PHENOMENAL on your home speaker system, with every bone-crunching body punch and automatic maching gun bullet fired. The disc is also backed up by some impressive bonus content, including a preview of Part 2, a look at the first female Robin (voiced by Modern Family's Ariel Winter), and a special focus feature on Batman creator Bob Kane.

For Batman fans, this is an absolute must and once it's done you'll be craving Part 2. The Blu-ray is a stellar pick-up in its own right, with excellent picture, sound and bonus content. Job well done, Warner Animation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another interesting layer to the Dark Tower series..., May 21 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Dark Tower series has always been coveted by many Stephen King fans, so it's a welcome sight to see another book added to the mythology even though Roland "The Gunslinger" Deschain's quest came to an end several years ago. Taking place between Volume 4 (Wizard & Glass) and Volume 5 (Wolves Of The Calla) we find Roland and his group seeking shelter from a deadly storm during their venture.

The incident recalls to Roland a past murder mystery he investigated in his youth as well as the story that he heard as a child that connects to the storm and the case from long ago. Roland decides to tell these tales to his comrades to pass the time, with the reader falling progressively into each story and then coming back to the present. Longtime readers are rewarded with bits of info that shed some light on a few characters we 're already familiar with, but the structure is very similar to Volume 4's heavy return to the past and therefore only a bit of time is spent expanding Roland 's current journey.

Still, for fans who believed that this series was over, a return to the wickedly bizarre and fantastical world that King created continues to prove itself as a fascinating read. Definitely a must for faithful followers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great cop show that deserves more attention., March 16 2012

Southland is a top-notch police drama that has been unfairly overlooked by audiences and even TV studios when it debuted its first season on NBC and was subsequently cancelled. Luckily TNT swooped in and saved it during the production of its shortened six-episode second season which you can find here on this DVD package. The series follows a number of officers and detectives who work the streets of Los Angeles and reflects the challenges both personally and professionally that they face on a daily basis.

The drama is compelling, the writing is crisp and the characters are incredibly developed and fleshed out. The show is also shot from angles and locations that make you feel you're right in the middle of a scene or the events, which draws you in even further. The show is not above delivering some shocking moments and risking the lives of characters, so it's never a safe experience like you would find on most procedural shows on TV. Southland also features a gifted cast, led by Regina King, Ben McKenznie and Michael Cudlitz.

If you're not already on board with this gripping drama, do yourself a favour and catch up with any DVD sets you can get your hands on, including this one. It comes with strong picture and audio quality, along with some bonus material like deleted scenes and location shooting trivia. Highly recommended.
