5.0 out of 5 stars Nipaiamianan by FLORENT VOLLANT ( of Kashtin), Aug 9 2010
This review is from: Nipaiamianan (Audio CD)
I sincerely pity those who don't know FLORENT VOLLANT yet.

Although there are songs in this album that I seldom listen to, the best ones alone make this CD worth 5*. I have compiled my favourites from it together with my favourites from his first album, KATAK, and this makes for a powerful compilation.

I would have written a review for both albums years ago, if only I could do them justice; but it's hard to describe the magic of songs like Tshishe Manitu ( Great Spirit ), an entrancing prayer, or Makue (actually sung by a friend of his, Gabriel Jourdain), with its overwhelmingly mystical feel.

Nipaiamianan, a naturally meditative album brimming with passion, is a Christmas album, but the songs I love in it do not remind me of Christmas, and can be listened to ALL YEAR round.
On the other hand, a small number of them are well-known classic Christmas songs and I have a problem with these, since I never really enjoy hearing 'mainstream' music that everybody has heard a thousand times ( they are however sung in Innu too, and Florent's uncomparable voice does give them a new freshness and purity - The title song Nipaiamianan for example is a relatively well-known song, but I did not recognize it for a long time! It is actually among my favourites' compilation ).

FLORENT VOLLANT ( formerly of the duo KASHTIN) is a songwriter, composer and singer, so most of his songs are his, and he sings in his beautiful INNU tongue ( Native American from Subarctic Canada / Northern Quebec & Labrador).
He explains that in this album, he has gathered together the seasonal songs he remembers from his childhood, some that were only known to the Innu, and some that we all know, but all are sung in INNU.

Marginally contributing are other special artists such as Zachary Richard and Richard Seguin.

Of course, I recommend his first album KATAK too (and compiling the two together in one's own order).
His third and latest album, Eku Mamu, is a good follow-up, but I wouldn't start with it if I didn't know Florent Vollant yet.

" On n'est pas prophête en son propre pays" - Not one review here yet, in Florent Vollant's own country? Shame.

D'instinct, by Richard Seguin with Marc Chabot and FLORENT VOLLANT

Richard Seguin is a VG artist in his own right, and I have several of his CDs.
All the same, in this CD the pleasure is tripled by contributions of giant artists such as Marc Chabot and Florent Vollant.

Pierre Chabot is one of the geniuses behind the marvellous Claire Pelletier's CDs, songwriting together with her. He is a songwriter but also a philosophy teacher - His lyrics in Claire pelletier's first two albums were brilliant and thrilling, here they are more on the poetic side, than philosophical.

Florent Vollant, one of my very favourite artists, used to be part of the well-known duo Kashtin, and although usually singing in his Native American language ( Innu / Montagnais), has achieved international fame, especially in France and Germany. He chants here on the song " Le Son Des Songes" ( the sound of daydreams ), making it a favourite for me.

In a lovely 24-page booklet ( which contains all the lyrics), next to the song Seguin has written a nice message for Florent's family: " Le Son Des Songes" is dedicated to the family of Tekuanen Florent Vollant .. ( etc..). ... for your so generous hospitality and for these shared days on the ancestral land of Tshipetshanekuan. Which shows a connection with Florent (and his Innu world) deeper than just from co-working.

Note that Seguin & Vollant have an history of working together and Seguin has also contributed to some Florent Vollant albums.

Beautiful music by a great mix of talented artists from Quebec.

5.0 out of 5 stars TWO different CDs by the same name, Aug 31 2006
I know 2 different music CD albums by this title, but I can't see the label " Red Feather " on any of the two, as the one listed here seems to be ... so if anybody around here could enlighten us about a third CD with this title, I'd be very interested !

Here are bits of info about the 2 I know...

Of course, they both refer to Leonard Peltier, the famous US political prisonner, who's spent the last 30+ years in prison and is still there, and about whom a book also by the title " In the spirit of Crazy Horse" was written.

The first CD by this title ( 1992 )is by various artists who have contributed their songs for this cause.

Complete title: " In the ...: Songs for Leonard Peltier "

TRACK LIST of this CD:

1. Please Sign here ~ Joanne Shenandoah ( a different version from the known one);

2. Eagle Horse ~ Mitch Walking Elk

3. Dakota Wind ~ Ellen Klaver

4. Pray for the people ~ Carolyn M Brittell

5. Anna Mae ~ Larry Long

6. Not for sale ~ Alice Di Micele

7. Stolen land ~ Bruce Cockburn

8. You're a brave one ~ Joanne Shenandoah

9. Song for Leonard Peltier ~ Jim Page

10. A crime that isn't mine ~ Julie Robbins

11. Blow Dakota blow ~ Jim Page

12. Patriot ~ City Folk

13. Bury my heart in Wounded Knee ~ Buffy Sainte-Marie

14. Leonard Peltier : IN HIS OWN WORDS

The insert includes art by Leonard Peltier himself, a photo of him & notes about him, a poem, a card to send the President of the US ...

The second CD by this title ( 1997 )is by Longacre Indian Head Penny Band / Clayton Longacre

TRACK LIST for that CD:

1. Too late, too late, to right the wrong

2. Talk to the sky

- Set Leonard Peltier free

3. Our Crazy Horse

4. The Indian gives, The government breaks

( Despite having only 4 tracks, it is not an EP or single, but rather a full-length album, if rather short, as most tracks are quite long ).

This one is possibly my favourite, as it has more originality than the above more folkey one. It has perhaps some folkey notes too, but the voice is quite unique and fresh; it is also gentle and easy on the ear. I also find the music itself has much more Native American sound & elements in it, for example including traditional native instruments as well as modern, and bits of traditional Native chorussing / chanting in the background ( all in great harmony!) ...

All the lyrics are included in the 8-page leaflet, which also has lengthy notes & a close-up photo of the main artist.

A very rare CD, which I think is well worth looking for & discovering ( Think of trying different Amazon branches if unavailable or unaffordable on one ).

5.0 out of 5 stars A revelation, the start of a passion...., Mar 15 2004
This review is from: Native American Legends (Audio CD)
.
This was my 1st introduction to Native American music, together with Sacred Spirit, and I can't think of a more exciting and balanced introduction (for someone totally ignorant of tribal music) than those two CDs together.

Ever since I've been listening only to Native American music, widening my range of styles within this category( some take a little ear-training), but still loving my first 2 cds.

I don't recall ever being so excited by music before. This music and these voices seem to get into your skin, and compel you to get up and dance or exercise to spend sudden overflows of energy, or just move eyeshut in a sort of entranced blissful state.

Somehow the music overspilled into my life, affecting me and my thoughts so much that I had to go out and find all the info I could find about Indian culture, past and present, etc., and before I knew it I had found myself an all-engulfing kind of a new passion.

Anyway; what is this cd made of? the vocals are genuine Indian vocals, but the accompanying music is not: there are modern additions, such as light and subtle synth's and keyboards (the best I've ever heard), and good consistent rythms. This music really sounds wonderful, balances and supports the vocals making them sound so much better than alone - I know because I took the same cd at the library - but one that has only the vocals (exactly the same tracks otherwise), no music whatsoever, and contains only authentic Indian vocals.

If you don't know this cd you're missing out. It's incredibly cheering & stimulating, at the same time as calming & comforting! It makes an excellent introduction to Native American music.

Keywords are: vibrant, exuberant, carrying you above the ground/lifting, relaxing, spiritual, very ethnic and evoking vast West American landscapes and wild spaces. Music and vocals blend together marvellously, and I am still amazed at the musicians' skill level.

By the way, these artists sometimes sell under the name 'Navajo' (but so do another - not so great - band: careful!). if you buy this cd as part of the 3cd-boxset called "Native American Collection", know that the No 2 inthere is not by the same artists. The credits for the above cd (and Nos 1 & 3 of the boxset) are: Wasskoenig and Reklov.
