First-rate - Mrs. Beeton is my heroine!, Sep 16 2010
This is an excellent production. It seems quite true to the real story of Mrs. Beeton. Her life was not at all the way I had imagined it. Parts of this film are really heartbreaking, other parts are funny, but overall this is just a beautiful film. Brilliant actors and sets - I loved this film so much I bought a vintage copy of Mrs. Beeton's cookbook.

beautiful sets but painfully slow, July 14 2010
I have read some of Tolstoy's works and I was interested to learn more about his life, but my husband and I couldn't even get half way through this movie. The acting is very good and the costumes and sets are wonderful, but for some reason it failed to engage us. It moves at a slow pace and the story line just isn't that captivating. A somewhat disappointing film, however it might be of interest to anyone studying Tolstoy.

Beautifully done, Jun 24 2010
This film is visually stunning and the costumes are fabulous. The acting is superb and the story is romantic and interesting. I'm always amazed that films like this are even still produced. Anything Julian Fellowes (made Gosford Park too) puts his hand to is pure gold.

one of the best novels I've read in years, Feb 28 2010
What a gem! I didn't want this novel to end. Fellowes is a brilliant writer with a wicked sense of humour. His novel Snobs is just as clever.

Hilarious, touching film, Dec 16 2009
This film manages to be deep, light, sad and funny all at the same time. The three main actors in this film are just outstanding. A hidden gem - highly recommended!

Most enjoyable set of mysteries, Dec 16 2009
Julian Fellowes gives his own theories at the end of each mystery about what really happened in these famous real-life British murder stories. As one could only expect from Fellowes, his theories are clever and interesting. The mysteries themselves are intriguing and the acting is first-rate. There is one story, however, about a murder in Kenya, which pales in comparison to the movie based on that story called White Mischief.

good value for the money, Dec 16 2009
This was a good deal for getting four Victorian dramas in one. All four are pretty good, but I wouldn't rate any one of them as excellent. I thought Lady Audley's Secret was the best.

felt like watching a recording of a stage play, Dec 16 2009
This was a disappointing film. Maggie Smith is of course fabulous, but even she can't make this work. Unfortunately it's one of those older BBC productions where you feel as though you are sitting in a theatre audience with a one-dimensional view. It's stiff, stagey, and I thought, boring. I didn't even watch it to the end.

worth watching, Dec 16 2009
This is an older BBC drama, so the film quality isn't as good as say Little Dorrit, but it's not one of those stiff stagey ones either. The acting in this film is superb, and like all of Dickens' stories, it's chock full of interesting, humorous, and colourful characters. The captain and "Joey B" are priceless, Mr.Dombey is a brilliant Scrooge-like character, and his lovely daughter Florence is of higher than ordinary moral worth. I really liked this story and the end was moving.
