Good Movie, Poor Advertising, April 5 2013
The illustration on the website shows the blu ray with a slip cover but none was received with my order. If you are not going to ship it with a slip cover Amazon.ca, please do not show the slip cover in the illustration. Thank you.

Packaging Comment, Dec 28 2012
I just purchased this extended edition set at a great price ($38.99) from Amazon.ca. My only issue is that the box the set of discs comes in appears to have a fault as it is different from the illustration on their site. The front cover of the box set I purchased appears on what would normally be the rear cover side and vice versa.

Inspirational and entertaining true story, Oct 9 2011
I love true stories. This one is about Erik Weihenmayer who is blinded from a rare disease at a young age. It follows him as he grows quickly into a man and takes an interest in rock climbing, eventually focussing on his climb of Mount Everest. The film also touches upon the people in Erik's life as he matures, including his parents, wife and friends. I'm not sure if this movie played in theatres or not because it comes across a bit like a television movie but please do not take this as a slight because I found the movie to be very good including the script, acting and filming. The potential to become too sentimental was a real possibility but the writers and actors avoided this. The script sounded very real to me. I think this is a great inspirational film, suitable for the whole family. It had a little bit of everything in it including heartbreak and humour. For those hard of hearing there are subtitles as well. Well worth the money!

Who's the Turkey?, Feb 12 2011
I purchased this dvd based upon the rave reviews and this one lived up to its billing. An upper-class businessman, Pierre Brochant, and his bourgeoisie buddies have a weekly dinner to which they each invite an unsuspecting "idiot" for their selfish amusement. One of the upper crust, a book publisher, invites a stranger, Francois Pignon, whose claim to fame is building famous landmarks out of toothpicks. In this case however the tables are turned when the well-meaning "idiot" turns his host's life into a living hell. The script and acting are superb! The film is in French but it has English sub-titles which are easy to follow along if you don't parlez-vous. There is a reason someone tried to copy the original. I have not seen Dinner for Schmucks but based upon the Amazon reviews, if you like your comedy a little more on the intelligent side then you would be better to stick with The Dinner Game.

Epic Ancient Chinese War Film, Jan 23 2011
I purchased the extended version of Red Cliff for $11.99 on Amazon.ca which was a great value compared to anywhere else. It is an epic Chinese movie set in the third century. The movie focuses on Cao Cao, a leader portrayed as evil, and desperate to completely control the region by force versus the efforts of a few remaining pockets of unconquered leaders and their smaller armies joining forces to hopefully defeat Cao Cao and his massive 800,000 strong army/navy. The smaller armies are represented in the film as protecting the common folk. There is a lot of fighting consisting of large battle scenes and smaller fights within the larger scenes highlighting specific individuals' abilities. Like many martial arts movies, some of it is over the top so if one of your pet peeves is realism be prepared to have that reality stretched. Overall however the battle scenes are exciting and the scenes/sets throughout the movie are beautiful. The movie is in Mandarin but has English and French subtitles.

Captivating dark film, Oct 7 2010
Highly recommended film noir. This is a movie best watched without knowing much of the storyline beforehand so read on at your own peril. I will set the story up but try to leave most to the imagination. A young man is struggling to help his family survive by doing some roof repairs but the man who hired him dies before the job is finished or the labourer gets paid. The young man steals from the deceased an envelope containing train tickets and a hotel reservation which the young man believes will lead to monetary reward based on conversations he has overheard while working on the roof...be careful what you wish for! The plot and acting are good throughout. While there is ample violence in the film it is not in your face in the traditional sense. There is little blood and guts, the film is shot in black and white, and the violent scenes are carefully constructed. Nonetheless, it is a tense movie that will have you emotionally engaged. French with optional English subtitles.

The Waiting Game, Oct 1 2010
This film centres around a group of Israeli soldiers dug in at a post on top of a mountain in occupied Lebanon. The Israelis have been there since 1982 but are on the verge of pulling out. The name of the movie, Beaufort, refers to the ruins of a fortress on top of the same mountain which hails from the Crusader days. Hezbollah sends mortar rounds and the odd missle into the compound causing a fair amount of angst for the Israelis, most of whom are anxious to return to Israel. The Israeli soldiers must wait however for the word from the chain of command in the meantime. The movie examines closely the emotional toll the situation is taking on those soldiers; carrying out their duty while conflicted with the desire to go home. No doubt this movie is more accurate in its portrayal of war than a number of Hollywood type war flicks but for those who enjoy the latter you may find this movie moves too slowly and does not have enough action.

Love and Lies, Sep 23 2010
The Apartment is a film about love and infidelity but it is more than that. It plays out like a mystery novel as more pieces of the puzzle fall into place. The movie revolves around a man looking for his lost love and a third party attempting to thwart his search through almost any means possible because of her own desires. As I watched this film I was wondering why it seemed so familiar and it is because I had previously seen the 2004 Wicker Park, an American version of the film. While some of the scenes flow better and I enjoyed Matthew Lillard more in the male friend role in the Wicker Park version, overall I enjoyed The Apartment more. The chemistry of stars Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci in the Apartment is quite evident. In fact they later married in real life. The endings of both films are quite different but I think both are worth a watch if only just to compare. There are English subtitles available with either film.

Hollow Script, Dec 16 2009
An FBI agent, ex DEA agent and a hit man combine forces in an attempt to take down a crime syndicate, its bosses and recover a huge pile of cash. While it is a kind of cute romantic/comedy/action flick, it also seemed to me that the writer could not decide which of these it should be and he/she ended up with mediocre results in an attempt to be all things to all people. The only saving grace, in my opinion, was the valiant effort by Donald Sutherland, who does an admirable job playing the role of the unorthodox hit man. There are no subtitles for the hard of hearing.

Intriguing Espionage Movie, Nov 4 2009
This is a compelling film because it is a spy thriller, based on a true story, with historical consequences. A "common" Israeli, who speaks fluent Arabic, is recruited in the 1960's by Israeli Intelligence and assumes the identity of a wealthy Syrian businessman. His ties to those in power in Syria become stronger with time, enabling him to gain the confidence of his Syrian contacts, a number of whom hold strategic posts including within the Syrian military. The movie does have a television production feel to it but this should not be interpreted as a negative comment. The script is good and the acting strong. My greatest disappointment is the lack of subtitles for those who are hearing impaired.
