The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip
The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip
by George Saunders
Edition: Hardcover
21 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Silly, Fun and it includes a good lesson!, Feb 18 2005
"The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip" is truly delightful and funny and for readers of all ages. George Saunders creates a tale about a small village (of all of three houses) that live by a sea where the 5 little children go out three times a day to brush gappers off their goats, which supply the milk and literately the income of the village.

The characters of this story are truly amazing and so silly that it makes for an entertaining read. There is the main character Capable (who is indeed very capable) who lives with her widowed father who believes that everything should stay the same. The other two that families living in Frip, Mrs. Bea Romo (who also seems to be a widow although it isn't really mentioned in the story) who lives with her two sons Gilbert and Robert (who have an IQ of around 3.7) and Sid and Carol Ronsen and their two daughters (that believe that when they stand still they are very pretty) are truly weird and wacky and very silly. The gappers themselves are truly imaginative. They are little orange creatures that have multiple eyes and the IQ or 3.7 (the same as the two Romo boys). Their actions of jumping onto the goats and shrieking at high pitches are done with a reason that explains their character a little better. The characters help create develop the story into something truly remarkable with they attributes.

This story also has a lesson woven into its plot. Help others (and don't call people a snoot). That is what is needed to overcome the gapper problem of Frip; the families must overcome their own selfishness. This story is truly remarkable and is for all ages. It makes you laugh uncountable times (something that not every book can do), I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good laugh and great illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trickster's Queen, Jan 21 2005
This review is from: Trickster's Queen (Hardcover)
Tamora Pierce has done it again! In her sequel to "Trickster's Choice" the raka further their rebellion against the luarin. Aly now is much more responsible and has taken on the role of 'Duani' (grandmother)(her name is like The Whisper Man (her father) with the pack of spies that she has trained over the winter at Tanair. However I find that sometimes Aly seems to get cocky and unprofessional which is probably the only setback about this story. The are a great many suprises that will leave you hooked on the book. Most of the characters are still part of story however Nawat does not make many apperances until the middle/end . Tamora Pierce's writing style gets better with every book and this is no exception! I would recommend this to all Tamora Pierce fans (however I suggest that you read all the Tortall books before becuase there is a lot of references to them) and all other fantasy lovers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eragon, Christopher Poalini, Jan 14 2005
This review is from: Eragon (Audio Cassette)
One of my favorite books is Eragon (pronounced EHR-uh-gahn) is written by Christopher Paolini. This 500-page fantasy book was published in 2003. Eragon is set at least five hundred years ago. The main character, whose name is Eragon, is a farm boy. He has to go on an adventure with his dragon to try and save Alagaesia, the Empire. It all starts when he finds a blue stone but in reality it is a dragon's egg! Soon after the dragon hatches, a tragedy caused by evil occurs that will change his life forever. After that happens he is forced to go on an adventure with Brom (a storyteller) and when he is doing that he must make decisions that could change the Empire.
The reason I like it, is because of the action packed adventure that Eragon had. The people and the animals were very well developed which made reading the story that much more interesting. Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, become more mature as the story unfolds. The author portrays the two main characters through telepathic conversations. Christopher Paolini describes the characters so that you can visualize them in your head. Through hardships they are forced to develop traits such as bravery, team work, responsibility and maturity. Also I think that the author did a wonderful job writing it, using great vocabulary as well as Old Norse for the magic words! Another thing, the author was only fifteen when he started to write Eragon. Which makes it even more amazing! I found Christopher Paolini made his book seem like reality even though it was fantasy. I understand Eragon when he has to make decisions about real life problems. Although this book was written for children it is a fabulous read for anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Noughts and Crosses, Dec 16 2004
This review is from: Noughts & Crosses (Paperback)
Wow, fantastic and thrilling are all I have to say about this. This story is set in a world where Crosses rule over noughts. Things are slowly starting change because noughts start getting into Crosse's school. This is to the disliking of a very powerful man, father of a Cross that is a best friends with a nought.

This is about a Cross and a nought who are trying to save their friendship when their two different worlds split. It takes it from when they are little kids to when they are 18+. A friend recommened it to me and I am so glad that she did. I read it one night for 6 hours straight finishing at 12:00AM.

This story has everything that someone could wish for. After you finish it, it leaves you thinking (in a good way). I would not recommend it to people uderneath the age of 12, but any that age and over will enjoy this book until the last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dragon Rider, Dec 14 2004
This review is from: Dragon Rider (Hardcover)
Another great read by Cornelia Funke!

When humans start to come to where the dragons are hiding a young dragon volunteers to find the Rim of Heaven, the last sanctuary for dragons. When he and his friend (a brownie named Sorrel) go to get a map from a rat they meet a orphan boy (Ben) that joins them on their journey. The rest of the story is about them flying across the world to find the Rim of Heaven. They meet many marvelous creatures (as well as humans) on the way. The odd trio also has to avoid a huge gold dragon during their journey.

At the very beginning I found it rather confusing with things like what a brownie is (I never figured it out!), also it seemed like another cheesy book. However when one of my friends ask me if I was finished so that she could borrow it gave me the incentive to finish it. I am glad that I did! I found myself completely hooked onto the book, so much so that my mom had to pull it out of my hands so that I would do school work.

Cornelia Funke made a wonderful world using the world that we live in. She added a whole different side, one of fabulous creatures such as dragons and brownies. The author creates a fabolous tale when her protangonists face new dangers, meet new creatures and see different parts of the world. This book is for anyone who loves a great adventure, marvelous creatures and well anyone who enjoys a great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ratastrophe Carastrophe, Dec 14 2004
Another version of the pied piper... Yet "Ratastrophe Catastrophe" is the best pied piper version for kids. Not because it is babyish but because it is fun, imanginative, funny and full of action!:-)

When a young nobody gets possesed by an evil creature he gets the power to enchant animals and people. Dullitch (a city) has a giant rat infestion, so they offer a huge award to anyone who will rid the city of the monstrous rats. Of course the evil enchanter does and when he gets told that the city has no money to Voice (inside his head) tells him to take all the children. The only people that can save the city are a dawrf, giant and a old time sorcerer that has lost his spell book and has a terrible memory.

Yes it sounds like just another ordinairy adventure were the heros are perfect and of course they are going to save the world but in this story the heroes are not perfect. They are ordinairy (well as ordinairy as you can get in a city run be thieves and assasins) that have their own problems.

All the characters in this story are funny by their personalities, faults or decisions. This is a truly hilarious book that any kid should read. It gives you a different version of the pied piper and in my mind a truly better one. This is a must read for any one looking for a less then perfect adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Either you hate it or you love it., Nov 5 2004
Just from reading the reviews you either get the picture that it is a complete flop, copycat, poor writing style or the best book that the reader has ever read, it is intriguing, wonderful and complete. I must say that I fall into the it is the most wonderful book ever catergory. I since I am in the middle of trying to write a book myself I find I get a lot of inspiration from my favorite authours, Tamora Pierce... and I find myself getting ideas from them although you vary them slightly. That is what Christopher Paolini has done with many books but for his first book it is very good. He wrote the book for children not adults who are going to pick apart with every little mistake and find everything that is bad with it. Now that there are so many fantasy books out there is it hard not to get an idea that doesn't have some relation with another book. I am not going to tell the story becuase there are 844 some reviews that do that already including an earlier one of mine. I think that many of the aldults that are trashing this book should realize that this is a children's fantasy book not some highly experienced authour that has written an adult's book. This is a truly good book that many children and adults will like. I have recommened this book to all my friends cousins, aunts, uncles, parents and they have all liked it so I think that if you look at it from a different point of view, not one of he copied Lord of the Rings and many other books and all those other negative comments but that this is his first book and he was only 15 when he started it you might enjoy it much better. His writing style will imrpove with years of practice. I recommend this book to all children who like fantasy books and are at a lost of books while we are all waiting for the 6th Harry Potter book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fantasy Book, Jan 27 2003
This review is from: The Serpent's Egg (Hardcover)
I thought that The Serpent's Egg was a fabulous parallel-world fantasy book. Joan FitzGerald McCurdy has a way of capturing the reader with her wondrous story of Miranda and all her friends battling the demon Hate to save the world. It was a fabulous read and I can't wait until the next one comes out. All children ages nine and up must read this book. The plot was one of the best aspects of this book for I couldn't put it down. It was a great read while waiting for the next Harry Potter book. The sequel The Burning Crown is another fabulous book and it is also a must read for children ages nine and up.

This review is from: Just Ella (Paperback)
It was okay. I read the look inside and it looked very interesting but as it progressed I wasn't a good as the first bit. If you want a Cinderella book get Ella Enchanted. I think it just ruins the chance that there was a faerie god mother and magic. It was good enough read but the author could have thought of better ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book! Couln't put it down!!!!!!!!!!!, Jan 21 2003
This review is from: The Serpent's Egg (Hardcover)
This is one of the best books I have ever read! I couldn't put it down. My favorite race are the elves. I was a wonderful mixture of real life and fantasy life. Or so I thought. There are many funny bits, most of them were in the beggining but there were still some funny bits during the whole book. It is about friendship, courage and a bad guy. You have to read it! It was so good I wish that she had made it longer for I finished it in one day in and half.
