5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Comedy Team in the Perfect Comedy, July 10 2004
This review is from: Odd Couple (Widescreen) (DVD)
Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy? This movie proves that the answer is no. Oscar is a sloppy New York sports writer. Felix is a fussy neat freak who writes the news for television. Both are divorced and share an apartment together. Felix complains about a pickle on the floor, and Oscar complains about Felix washing Oscar's poker cards. Yes, they get on each other's nerves endlessly, that is, until Oscar throws Felix out. This movie is one of my all-time favorites, and unlike other movies I've seen, it doesn't get stale with repeated viewings. All in all, a classic comedy by Neil Simon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Classic, July 9 2004
This review is from: Some Like It Hot (DVD)
Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe are hilarious in this classic Billy Wilder film. Two musicians, Jerry and Joe, whitness a shooting and flee to an all-girl band and disguise themselves as Josephine and Daphne. Their job is three weeks in Florida. However, when millionaire Osgood Fielding develops a crush on Daphne and the gang catches up to them in Florida, they're in for trouble, big trouble. This DVD is great; extras are plentiful, the movie is presented in widescreen. Any fan of Jack Lemmon or Billy Wilder won't want to be without this great movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Explain, July 1 2004
This review is from: The Best of The Who (Audio CD)
Why are so many hit songs from the Who missing on this CD? "I Can't Explain," "Baba O'Reily," "The Kids Are All Right," and other hit songs are all missing. If you're a die-hard fan of the Who and this is the only CD you don't have, go ahead and buy it. But if you're new to the Who, here's what to do: get "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" and "Who's Next." Those two CDs offer what really is the best of the Who. I call that a bargain, the best I ever had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative Genius, July 1 2004
This review is from: Anthology 2 (Audio CD)
The seven live tracks on disc 1 of this compilation are evidence that Beatlemania is not long for the world. In fact, the closing tracks on disc 1 are songs recorded live at the Budokan Hall in Japan. Two months later the Beatles were through touring. Now they could continue to develop their music even further. Here for the first time, listeners can enjoy totally new versions of songs recorded in 1965 and '66, at the height of creative minds. The emerging creative genius would soon create such powerful works as "Sgt. Pepper" and "Magical Mystery Tour." Disc 2 is full of ultra rare outtakes from that period. Buy this set, and enjoy the early versions of what would become some of the Beatles' most memorable songs...and a little humor on the side.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stick to the Original, Jun 30 2004
This review is from: Out-of-Towners (DVD)
If you've seen the original "Out-of-Towners" with Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis, there's really no reason to see the remake. Jack was so funny and put everything into his performance, but this time the humor just isn't there. The story is very rushed and it hurts the movie. For example, the couple leave Ohio, get on a plane, it can't land in New York, they can't find their luggage and are rerouted to Boston all in the first 20 minutes of the movie! And they altered the story a little, which cuts even more of the humor out of it. Like, instead of the hotel giving their room away, their credit card was decined. There's just nothing funny about that. Nor do I remember their going to a group in the hotel to talk about sex in the original movie! Making a remake of this incredible movie was a mistake. Or if they did want to do it, they could've taken the time to do it right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still Powerful, Jun 30 2004
This review is from: Elvis In Concert (Audio CD)
On January 8, 1977, Elvis turned 42. It would be his last birthday. This CD is the soundtrack to a TV special filmed in June of 1977, on Elvis' last concert tour. He was bloated, weak and ill, but that didn't stop him from putting on a good show. He put all the strength he had left into this show. He takes the stage and gives an energetic performance of "See See Rider"; this is followed by a mix of old and new hits. Occasionally he sound bored or tired, but his powerful renditions of gospel songs make up for that. Buy this CD, and enjoy Elvis' last tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Jun 30 2004
On November 27, 2000, the Who closed their tour with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall. In my opinion they've never played a better concert. The looseness of the group makes for a relaxed atmosphere and some really great rock and roll. There is a lot of improvisational jamming in between songs. The band acts very free onstage. For instance, when Roger sings the line, "Can I buy your magic bus" Pete screams out "No!" All in all a wonderful performance and a great DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here Comes The Big One, Jun 22 2004
This first season of Sanford and Son is the best! The episodes are hysterical, with Fred up to his usual old tricks, and Lamont being a big dummy. Get this and enjoy a good laugh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best, Jun 19 2004
This DVD features three segments: the Beatles' 1964 Washington, DC concert, their 1964 Hollywood Bowl concert, and a press conference from their August 1966 final tour. In between segments you see a blue screen with music notes all over it, which looks like it was done on a home computer. Next comes the quality issue: I have bootlegs that look and sound better than this DVD. Then comes the issue of completeness: At least two out of the three shows (I'm not sure about the interview) are incomplete. Of the Washington concert, only 8 of the 12 songs are presented. I have a bootleg DVD with all twelve - including "Long Tall Sally." Of the Hollywood Bowl concert, 2 of the 10 existing songs are here. I have a bootleg of the entire performance. If you want the complete Washington concert, check out the Beatles Around the World DVD. As for the Hollywood Bowl, one other song is presented (and in much better quality too) on the Anthology. So after all that, why is my rating so high? Well, yes the quality is bad and the shows are incomplete, but there are few other places where you can legally find this material. So it may not be a bad buy.
