5.0 out of 5 stars Game changer, May 25 2012

This machine is a jewel. Rice is not hard to cook, but requires supervision and cleaning of the "rice water" that inevitably bubbles out onto the stovetop. If you're like me, you also regularly end up with some rice overcooked at the bottom of the pan. No more with this machine. Rice cooks automatically after following the easy to read lines adjusting liquid volume to rice volume. You can even set the timer in the morning so the rice starts cooking before you come home. An important benefit for me is the warmer feature that keeps the rice at serving temperature for roughly 1-2 hours after its ready (and in good serving condition). This takes rice out of the equation when timing the other parts of the meal. Several good books here on Amazon have recipes for various simple and exotic rice recipes, including risotto (a more involved experience). The different menu options are invaluable including brown rice and other grains. There is an option for porridge, that you can setup the night before going to bed and wake up to porridge in the morning. An important thing to consider is the time needed to "optimally" cook rice, which includes a soaking period. Depending on the type of rice and quantity wanted the time required to cook rice from start to finish can reach 90mins. This can be shortened by using a quick-cook cycle that can take as little as 25 mins. This size is great for a family of 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great great great, May 25 2012

This is a great product. While all of this can be done by hand and in a conventional oven, there is much to be said for automation. I like having the bread take care of itself while I do other stuff. Some recipes can be setup before going to bed to start kneading in the wee hours of the morning so its ready by the time the family is coming down for breakfast to the smell of fresh bread. The various menu options including whole wheat and dough (for pizza or for unconventional sizes you wish to bake in another pan in the oven) are very useful. The large size allows baking a 2lb loaf, which is roughly the size of a store-bought loaf of pre sliced bread. The bread will stay good for 1-2 weeks in a bread box. Major benefits are knowing what you're eating, trying whole-wheat and other grain/flour options (several great books available on Amazon), and avoiding preservatives. The taste of fresh bread is simply amazing. One thing to consider is the size of the machine, which in our house goes on the floor of the entry to stay out of sight, only to be taken out once a week to bake the bread.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mmmmm, May 25 2012

This device makes great ice cream. I can't compare to other devices since I already had the Kitchen Aid base and it made sense to buy an attachment instead of a whole other machine. The attachment stays in our freezer in the garage so its always ready for use (needs to be close to freezing to do its job); if you have a small freezer then you need to consider how you'll make place and/or put it in there a few hours ahead of time to cool it. I have made a dozen of batches of ice cream, from the low fat to the most decadent and all are amazing. Comparing this to store-bought is like any home-made vs store-made comparison; I also like the fact that no preservatives or additives go into mine. My family likes the ice cream softish, which it is just as you finish making it. The rest of the batch goes in the freezer and becomes very hard for the following servings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to the original, May 25 2012

This is a great book. It is a succession of short chapters focusing on a variety of subjects related to/important for personal finance. It covers the basics but also drives deeper into some complex topics. The design is very different from the original Wealthy Barber (no story line, characters, etc.). Highlights for me were the different chapters discussing real estate/home ownership and mortgages, the real numbers looking at real estate as an investment vs other possible ways to invest your money, and the "couch potato" approach to investing including ETFs. Sometimes I was left wanting more, but realizing that almost everything that needed to be said was already written concisely in 2-3 pages. This is an important feature of the book (and its author): it doesn't promise to deliver great returns (as its acutely evident watching current events that nobody can promise this), it rather explains sound strategies to limit risk and unnecessary spending. Not too sexy but very effective. Now if it was only available as an electronic version...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good way to keep the pantry organized and sundries fresh, May 25 2012

These are great little (or big) containers. They are airtight but don't shake them too much or the lid will fly off under the pressure exerted by the contents (think brown sugar all over the floor...). The variety of shapes and sizes make them perfect for everything from lasagna pasta to pine nuts. The see-through wall make labelling unnecessary except for exotics or multiple grains or rice. The lid can be disassembled for thorough cleaning. I use these (about 30 different containers) in the pantry only (can you spell OCD?) so can't speak to their use in fridge/freezer/microwave.

4.0 out of 5 stars The jury is still out, May 25 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have owned 4 of these espresso cups since 2005. The original 4 were bought in Boston before moving to Canada. I was looking to complete the collection and ordered 4 others 1 week ago. I was surprised to see that the design has changed. These are now called Bodum "Air" and the base does not look like the one on the accompanying picture (as of May 25, 2012). There is now a silicone plug, roughly between sizes of a dime and a nickel (and about as thin), at the centre of the base's outer layer. This plug is very thin and does not change the way the cup sits on the counter. The explanations in the "manual" are to allow equilibration of air pressure without letting liquids (dishwater) penetrate the wall of the cup. I'm a little dubious about this and wondering why they changed a perfectly good design (patent issues maybe?). I'm also concerned that if this plug comes out then dishwater infiltration will become a problem. I also intend to wash these by hand now (contrary to the old model that I just put in the dishwasher) because I worry that repeated dishwasher use may deteriorate the thin silicone plug.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, May 25 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for the office 1 month ago along with some Bodum cups (the ones with the rubber) and tea leaves from Tealux. The device works like a charm: reaches the desired temperature quickly (either preset based on the type of tea or manually adjustable to 5 degree increments), lowers the basket containing the leaves once the right temperature is reached, lets it steep for the desired time (preset vs manual), and then raises the basket out of the water. It will make between 500-1200ml of tea, and keep it warm for up to 1 hour. Its a charm to use and very well designed. Some things to know: the carafe should not be dunked in water as it has some electronics where it connects to the base, but this has not been a limitation; the stainless steel components within the carafe become stained with tea after a few uses, even without leaving the tea in there for very long (purely aesthetic). I now enjoy alternately Silver needle chrysanthemum, Blue unicorn reserve, White pu-erh silver tips, and tai ping you kui. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reported to contain a suspected carcinogen that is banned from pacifiers, Feb. 1 2012
After 3 months of love we removed Sophie the Giraffe from our son's environment. He absolutely loved this toy, spending long minutes teething ("gumming" actually) on the giraffe's muzzle and legs. We got concerned that something spending so much time in his mouth should be above and beyond any suspicion so we googled her. A French agency (consumer agency UFC in its annual toy review) has reported that this toy contains a substance that has been banned from pacifiers. This toy passes under the radar since its not considered a pacifier. It contains a substance that can be transformed into a nitrosamine (classified as a possible or probable carcinogen by the American EPA). The full story is easily googled on French news sites (France Soir for one), that adds that Germany has tightened its laws which will result in this toy's ban from that country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what its supposed to, June 26 2011

Not much to say, other than you obviously need to leave this on a towel/rag on the counter after soaking in water. The wooden box is not meant to be a proper support for sharpening, but only a container for storage. This whetstone does what its supposed to.
