1.0 out of 5 stars Gore - What Is It Good For...Absolutely Nothing...., July 4 2008
This review is from: City of Living Dead (DVD)
...if there isn't a good movie attached to it.

I'm one of those horror fans who bought into the hype over the italian horror films. The usual reasons people who love these films recommend them are either because they find them suspenseful or they like the gore. There's nothing positive about the acting, the plot, or even the continuity, which I think are important elements in a good movie, horror or otherwise.
This movie starts off silly, and ends really badly. The way things happen and the plot devices used make you wonder if it wasn't written by a 10 year old kid. For instance, people are autopsied and then embalmed when they die, so they can't be 'buried alive'. And the gut puking scene that everyone praises, is poorly done. The internal organs are right-side out, so it looks more like the person ate someone elses organs and then starting throwing them up. The infamous drill scene is interesting to watch, but it goes on waaaay long. It stops being suspenseful after the 10th time you see the person, then the drill getting closer, then the person, then the drill getting closer. If it took that long, why didn't he just knee the guy in the groin? LOL.
And the ending is just beyond stupid. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I could probably say what it is, it wouldn't matter, because like a lot of these italian horror flicks, it doesn't add anything to the story itself. So technically it wouldn't even be a spoiler.
I would only recommend this film to people who should watch how NOT to make a horror film. If you really want to see gore with a good story, check out movies like John Carpenter's The Thing or Alien. Stay away from this silly film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy this only for Tales From The Crypt, Sep 29 2007
I say this because Fox has decided to release Vault of Horror as a censored, edited print. For example, in the first story, the payoff scene, which isn't even all that gorey when compared to horror films made today, is shown as a still image with the gorey part of the image blacked out. It's so amateurish it's not even funny. And they don't even mention the alterations in the description on the package. Talk about false advertising.

Assume your just buying the set for Tales From The Crypt. Otherwise, I would suggest you should pass on this until Fox fixes their mistake and puts out the uncensored version of Vault of Horror.

2.0 out of 5 stars Started Off Great, Ended In A Whimper, Mar 12 2005
I love zombie movies. I don't know what it is about the living dead that is so appealing. I was definitely looking forward to a film satirizing the zombie flick, namely Shaun of The Dead. First of all, I'm not a big fan of satire films that use puns of the films they're poking fun at as their titles. Whether it be Shaun of the Dead or Night of The Living Bread, it just comes across to in-your-face "this is supposed to be funny".
I enjoyed the first half or so of the Shaun of The Dead. I thought the gags were funny, like the false alarms when you're thinking 'okay, this is when the dead start to walk' and it doesn't happen. Then when it does start to happen, it's played off as something normal happening, until the very end of the scene. The humour in the film was funny. I didn't laugh out loud, but I enjoyed it.
It wasn't until the survivors make their way to their fortress/sanctuary, Shaun's favorite pub, that the film goes downhill for me. It just gets too dark and depressing and very sad. I just don't see the humor in killing someone you love or care about. I know that part wasn't supposed to be humorous, but because its such a huge downer, the film doesn't recover.
I'd recommend renting this film first just to see if you like it. But if you're expecting a hilarious, gut busting film from beginning to end, you might be disappointed.
Edit: I've since watched Hot Fuzz, which I loved, and the TV series Spaced, which I also loved, both of which feature Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. I'm going to have to give this film another try and hopefully I will be able to give a less nasty review!
Edit: I rewatched Shaun Of The Dead. I think I'd give it maybe 1 1/2 more stars. It was funny, but overall, I just didn't think it was as humourous as Hot Fuzz or the Spaced series. It was nice seeing people from the Spaced series make appearances, and the extras on the DVD are also worth checking out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not As Bad As They Say, Feb 10 2005
I was expecting to see a terrible movie, like Battlefield Earth terrible. But this film was actually well-done. The story was suspenseful and the acting was great. Too bad Robert Forester's role isn't as big as it could have been. First he was in Black Hole, then he's in Supernova. I wonder what solar-related sci-fi film he'll be in next? :)
This film is worth checking out. Even after all the negative hype, it's 1 1/2 hrs well-spent.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Have A Grudge Against This Film., Nov 9 2004
This review is from: Ju-on (DVD)
If you like a movie with the occasional creepy moments, but no story or explanation, then this film is for you. This film is essentially a string of death scenes cause by vengeful spirit(s). There's no real story. There's no explanation as to why the problem/ghost exists. There's no explanation as to why the house it exists continued to stand even when so many people died because of it. I know cliches like the psychic or priest usually kill a movie, but I think it would have helped this film. The conflict would have at least given the film some direction or purpose. Sadly, some directors spend too much time trying to make scenes on the screen create an emotional reaction but fail to tie them all together with a story arc. Skip this film.

1.0 out of 5 stars If I Could Rate It 0 Stars..., Nov 6 2004
...well, you know that cliche.

I'm a HUUUUUUUGE Brady Bunch fan. I'll definitely be one of the people who buys Season 1 of the original series on release day, if Sherwood Schwartz and Paramount ever release it. Also, I thought the Brady films were HILARIOUS!!! Shelly Long and Gary Cole made great Mike and Carol Bradys, and the actors and actresses who played the Brady Kids were funny and memorable.

Sadly, this third entry into the Brady Movie 'trilogy' is horrible, at best. Gary Cole and Shelly Long have to work with weak dialogue, a lame storyline, and a supporting cast that you wished could have stayed locked away in the Presidential Bunker for a long time. I think the only non-veteran actor or actress in the film that went on to something successful was one of the girls at Marcia's slumber party, who's currently in that irritating McDonald's commercial with that guy who can't find his Happy Meal toy.

I'm surprised that this film was even allowed to be broadcast on TV, it was so wretched. It definitely ranks (pun intended) with other misfires, like the Variety Hour and The Bradys spinoff. What's really sad is that I think this also puts the final nail in the coffin of the 'anything Brady' nostalgia phase, which also included the Growing Up Brady movie. After this film, I wonder if any more Brady-related projects will be made.

Already Sherwood and Paramount - it's time to clean the palate with the release of Season 1 of the Brady Bunch TV series!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Stop George Before He Really Goes Too Far!!, Sep 22 2004
I can't believe it. I bought this DVD before reading the reviews, expecting it to be a digitally REMASTERED director's cut in the true sense of the word. Then while watching, and seeing the glaring CGI scenes, I realize director's cut in Lucas' vocabulary means 'anachronistic CGI enhancement'. Why does George insist on doing this? I think there needs to be a psychological term created to describe what he's doing, because it's just not sane. What's next? Digitally introducing a receding hairline on Ron Howard in American Grafitti? Maybe he could digitally add more scenes of Harrison Ford in the film? This makes me so mad, I'm gonna drop some money for a VHS copy of the film so I can see the original flick, unadulterated, unmangled, unface-lifted.
Oh yeah, the movie and the background docs gets 5 stars. -3 for the digital enhancement.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry George, You Aren't Getting My Money This Time., Sep 19 2004
I've seen all three original films and the special edition re-releases in the theatre during their original runs. I own the original and sp.ed. versions on VHS. But I ain't buyin' this one simply because it's a work of art that has been bastardized. Just like with Michael Jackson and is face, George Lucas can't stop altering and fiddling around with his art.

Okay, he came up with the story, and he made the original without any corporate interference, yada yada yada. It's one thing to be anti-corporation. It's another thing to be anti-fan/anti-audience. People loved the originals not necessarily because of the visuals, which were stunning, and still are. They loved the originals because of the acting and the story, which is why the last two additions to the Saga have been widely panned. George should swallow his pride and realize that having strong principles isn't always a demonstration of good character. Sometimes you have to realize that you have to please others as well, and not just yourself.

Kudos to Mr. Lucas for having the guts to stand up to the corporate film industry system. Too bad his new paradigm is just as anti-artist and fascistic as the system he fought against for so long.

4.0 out of 5 stars Uncut and Widescreen., May 6 2004
This review is from: Dragon Fist [Import] (DVD)
For those people looking for the most complete version of 'Dragon Fist', this is the one to buy. It's not only widescreen, but also 90 minutes long! This has been an issue for collectors of this film because the only prints that seem to be available are the cut 75 minute versions. The missing section includes the abduction and death of a child, but you don't see the child get killed, so I'm not sure why it was removed. The quality of the film is okay. Not crisp and clean, but the colors are alright. The source was probably an old VHS tape. That's why I'm giving it only 4 out of 5. But if your a completist, then this is the version of the film you'll want to get!

By the way, I'm referring to the Beverly Wilshire DVD in case this review gets attached to another DVD release.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Whodunit That Falls Apart Towards The End, Mar 25 2004
This review is from: Gothika (Widescreen) (DVD)
I won't go into the plot of this film, so I'll just talk about the good points and the bad. Great suspense thriller, which has a good buildup. The atmosphere is great as well, I guess done in a gothic style, hence the name of the film.
Sadly, the film falls apart at the end. There's no clarification on why Halle Barry's character did what she did. And how could all that stuff be going on at the end without anyone hearing? And of course, someone (I won't say who), shows up right after, which goes nowhere. And the ultimate ending - 'I see dead people'. What was this? An attempt to plant the seed for a sequel? It was really dumb.
So, while the film delivers on chills and suspense, it ultimately falls flat at the end, suffering from the problem of cliches and a lame wrap up.
