4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Helpful book for Professional Development, Nov. 23 2014

As a child therapist with thirty years of experience - there are parts of this book that I will not use in the play room. The authors extensive use of almost confrontational interpretation is I believe dated and inappropriate therapeutically. Having said that some of the "softer" less direct interpretations described are more fitting for the play room and my practice. I really enjoyed the authors emphasis on the importance of increasing the structure of the session for more aggressive children. Their description of how these aggressive children get overwhelmed by their emotions and how a more directive therapeutic approach leads them toward more internal organization and ability to self-regulate was very useful. The numerous case studies/examples and detailed descriptions of therapeutic techniques made this a refreshing and helpful book for my professional development. I would recommend this book to any child therapist uncertain how to help very aggressive children in their practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, Sept. 6 2010
I have been a child therapist for 3 decades and this book was quite inspiring. I found my use of the creative arts in my sessions greatly increased as did my effectiveness after reading Cathy Malchiodi book. What a pleasure :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Parents and Therapists, Sept. 6 2010
I am a child therapist interested in attachment theory and its application to parenting. Hughes has shown in this book the expertise he has developed after many years of clinical practice. He presents the theory in a grounded and easy to understand manner. And with numerous examples of dialogues between the parent and child he has given the reader quite a comprehensive view of attachment focused parenting. Its a nice demonstration of why a behaviourist approach should only be a small part of what is best for raising children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for parent as well as clinician, April 7 2010
Clear, simply worded and described concepts and examples of putting Somatic Experiencing into practice with traumatized children. Lots of practical techniques/ways of assisting children to express and "complete" fixed action patterns. I will share it with my colleagues and use many of the suggested strategies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical and very useful information, July 12 2008
Escaping the Middle Class by Doug Anderson was a quick, but not always easy read. Some of his detailed descriptions of his leveraging/investing were beyond me. However, I was able to follow 95% of his plan for financial freedom, and it made good sense. The specific and mostly straightforward explanations of how to get from being caught in the middle class rat race to being financially free were inspiring. I feel I have enough information to move forward on many of his suggestions. These would include investing like a millionaire and making the equity in the family home work harder. Mr. Anderson has a solid grasp of the topic he is presenting here, he writes in a clear step by step fashion and gives the reader very powerful knowledge to make significant changes in one financial situation. A very useful book on financial education.
