5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I've seen in a LONG time, Jan 24 2004
This review is from: Disco Pigs (DVD)
The tag line for this movie is "90 minutes you'll never forget!" and believe me, you won't.

Pig and Runt are best friends, twins from different mothers who have barely spent a minute apart. As a result, they have created their own private world, ignoring those around them. Though it sounds like a fairy tale scenario, it definitely isn't. They've lived in their own world so long, a world apart seems painful, even more so when Runt begins to search for something more.

The casual viewer may watch this movie thinking Pig is absolutely mad and a very unlikeable character. But I don't believe this is so. Pig has a very pure, very raw love for Runt. So pure and so overpowering that it overcomes any morality or sense of right and wrong that he might have. All that matters is that he and Runt stay together, no matter what. He is not an evil character. He is simply incapable of understanding the real world.

Runt, on the other hand, is a very strong, almost level-headed girl who knows that there is a world beyond Pig. A world with people in it, with more love. Love that won't smother her or cling to her. She loves Pig, but is unable to comprehend his level of commitment to her. As they both say, they are the other's world. But Runt is the only one who understands that these two worlds have the ability to merge.

This movie is one of the best I have ever seen. The actors understand their characters and live in their scenes. You don't see performances like the ones Cillian Murphy and Elaine Cassidy put forth very often. Pig and Runt are both extremely likeable characters and there were points where I rooted for both of them, despite their actions. The accents and secret language, to me, were easy to understand and gave it that ethereal, surreal feel. Innocence amid the madness. The tag line doesn't lie. These 90 minutes will stay with you for a very very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for fangirls or those wanting a slasher zombie flick, Dec 7 2003
28 Days Later" is not simply a zombie/horror flick for those who are hoping for blood, gore and information thrown at them. The level at which one must watch this movie is far different from the level needed to watch teen slashers such as "Scream" or other zombie movies. First of all, nowhere is there a mention of zombies. They are infected. That is what is truly frightening about this film. They are humans, they are alive. They are simply incapable of feeling any other emotion but blinding, crippling rage.

This is not by any means a horror in the traditional sense. Rather, it is a psychological horror. The idea of the movie is terrifying. Awakening in a hospital, completely alone and disoriented, knowing only that something has wiped out the civilization of such a large city as London. This is a truly foreshadowing movie, in the wake of the deadly diseases overcoming the world in recent times. One must watch this movie with a complete open mind, ready to accept that this is what society could very well revert to. The soldiers, in particular, are a proper example. They have given up hope after such a short time. They have already convinced themselves that there is no other way.

The film does not contain any well known actors (save for Christopher Eccleston, although here in the US many have not heard of him). Therefore, you are not drawn to any character because of the actor portraying them. You are drawn to them for the way Alex Garland has written them.

Do not watch "28 Days Later" expecting to cower beneath your seat with a soiled pair of pants. The fear inflicted from this movie is a much more real fear. Solitude. Desolation. Destruction. No blood and gore could do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars GTA it's not, Aug 27 2003
This review is from: The Getaway (Video Game)
If you're looking for a Grand Theft Auto, UK version, this isn't the game for you. The Getaway is a game all on its own with realistic controls (you can't look behind you, you don't have a health meter, there is no map), but what one must remember is that this game was made to be more like a movie/real life than anything. There are no health packs in real life, no maps handy. The creaters did make The Getaway fairly simple to use, though. If you get shot too many times, Mark Hammond/DC Carter slouches and limps, gasping for breath and sometimes even stating they're hurt ("Ahh, it hurts!", etc). When this happens, the player can simply press the character to one wall so that he may lean and regain his health. When he's done, he stands upright, ready for action. To figure out where you are, simply look at the signals on the car. At times it may seem like you're going in a circle, which I admit can be frustrating, but eventually they're fairly easy to figure out.

As for the cinematics (cut scenes) in the game, I must admit they're a bit lengthy (epecially "Prodigal Son" and "Meet Mark Hammond," which go on for almost ten minutes). You're unable to bypass any of the cinematics (despite whatever cheat codes people are throwing around on the internet) and if you play it more than once, you may find yourself walking out of the room during the scenes.

All in all, I think the Getaway is an awesome game (if you're not too bothered by the filthy language) with great graphics and engaging characters. To compare it to GTA would be unfair and unneccessary. Rent/buy the game and see for yourself, but remember to think of it as a game in itself, not GTA in London.

Snatch: The Shooting Script
Snatch: The Shooting Script
by Guy Ritchie
Edition: Paperback
Price: CDN$ 13.18

5.0 out of 5 stars Liked the movie? Love the screenplay, Aug 22 2003
If you loved Guy Ritchie's first major movie, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you're sure to love his second movie, Snatch. Like the movie, the shooting script is fast-paced, sharp and amusing. From the introduction to the original script, filled with black and white photos of certain scenes, much like the movie, you can't stop until you're finished.
However, if you were expecting the same humor and nonserious nature of Lock, Stock... you may be in for a surprise. Snatch is a bit more serious at times and works with very different scenery.
Guy Ritchie wins this fight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, Mar 9 2003
This review is from: Angel:S1 (DVD)
I must admit, I've always been a huge fan of the first season of Angel. I haven't even watched any episodes since "To Shanshu..." The show began to go downhill quickly after they left the original office. I love that they finally have the entire first season on DVD.

But I was highly disappointed by the fact that the DVD extras lacked any information on Glenn Quinn/Doyle in anything but his bio and even THAT was a bit insulting. "He lives in LA and is single." And it was released two months after Glenn Quinn's tragic passing.

If you've never seen Angel, I would highly recommend these DVDs, despite its lack of content. The show is poignant, despite its "out-of-this-world" storylines. Even if you fancy yourself to be a science fiction free viewer, give this show a try. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Young And The Hopeless
Young And The Hopeless

1.0 out of 5 stars Mainstream Raped Good Charlotte, Mar 8 2003
This review is from: Young And The Hopeless (Audio CD)
Their CD, The Young and the Hopeless is, simply put, a let down. Their lyrics have done a complete 180. "Riot Girl" is filled with the words to every teenybopper's theme song. I wonder if the twins realized a hoodrat is defined as a prostitute? I find it funny that girls call themselves Riot Girls, not knowing what the song actually means.

"Boys and Girls" is a ridiculous song complaining about money hungry girls, but it seems to me that these are the kinds of girls the band has been attracting recently.

I haven't given up on the band. I'm still waiting for them to come back the way they were at the beginning. Real. But I won't hold my breath.
