5.0 out of 5 stars The Magic Of Computer Animation At Its Best!, Aug. 20 2002
SHREK is one of those movies that when you first see it amazing you on many levels. From the kids point of view it has characters and color and action and lot of slapstick cartoon humor. For the adults it has innuendos and under tones and a lot of intellectual humor. The subtleties of the dialogue and action of our main characters cannot really be appreciated until you have seen this movie more than once.
The story is great. There is an ogar named Shrek who wants to be left alone in his area of the forest. Due to an egocentric and selfish 'shot-sighted' king - ruler, Shrek is invaded by all the old fairytale character every created by the Brothers Grimm and all the other fairytales we grew up with and loved. From snow white to Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Goldilocks, the Gingerbread Man, the Magic Mirror, Pinocchio and a talking Donkey. A talking Donkey you say...hence the adventure begins.
From this point forward the two opposites (Shrek and the Donkey) must convince the king to get rid of tall the fairytale characters but they found out there is a price. They must rescue a princess from a mean dragon.
The movie is best represented by the talents of Mike Meyers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (The Donkey), John Lithgow (The King to be) and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona - these are the people that make this humorous and touching.
The DVD extras a really great. A bunch of stuff for the kids but for the adult there is the documentaries and the detailing of the computer animation process. Extremely detailed and hours of things to see and watch. I would recommend this for every family. Have fun. 8-20-02

2.0 out of 5 stars They Could Have Done Much Better!, Aug. 17 2002
CINDERELLA II is a movie that is obviously intended for young kids. They took the point of the view of 'story telling' literally. The mice and fairy godmother tell 'stories' as to what happened to Cinderella after her big ball. The problem is - not much happened and there was not much change or growth. In other words the mice tell a story - but there is no story to tell.
The mice try their usual slapstick and comic routines, but they no longer have the charm. The movie has its heart in the right place - its just not Disney to me. It's a wonder why people say 'doesn't anyone read the script anymore'.
There are some fun stuff on the DVD for kids - like the storybook with an interactive menu. There is also a music video and a DVD link. Overall this was a little disappointment. But it is good for the really young kids. (8-15-02)

4.0 out of 5 stars For What It Is, Samuel And Emillio Are Sure Having Fun!, Aug. 17 2002
LOADED WEAPON is one of those movies that is a farce and a comedy potpourri of celebrities and one-time bits. I personally love this kind of humor. It has a limited plot but the rode the characters go to get there is hysterical.
This came out in 1993 and this is one of the better-priced DVD'S out there. If you like Airplane, Top Secret, the Naked Guns films you love looking at this one. Starring Emillio Esteves and Samuel L. Jackson as two Police Officers who must solve the murder of Whoopie Goldberg ....
Make no sense? See the movie and it will all make sense. Bruce Willis, Larry Wilcox, Eric Estrada, Alison Beasley and Charlie Sheen also make appearances. My favorite cameo is James Doohan - the ever-popular Scotty of Star Trek.
There are not a lot of DVD extras, but it was the film and price that brought me to it. If you like to laugh, you'll like this one. The cameo's alone are worth it. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars This Movie Is Manilow Showing Us Wholesome Fun And True Love, Aug. 17 2002
This review is from: Copacabana (1982) [Import] (DVD)
COPACABANA was made back in 1985 for ABC pictures and Dick Clark's production company. Dick approached the thwen famous Barry Manilow about his song Copacabana and actually making a story about it for the small screen. It works very well and has a bitter sweet quality to it. It stars Barry Manilow himself with Annette O'Toole (now on the WB's Smallville).
Directed by Warren Hussen, it tells the story of two aspiring performances meeting at a radio competition and then finding out they have much more than music in common. They strive to be who they are. Tony Star (Manilow) an aspiring writer and performer and Lola Lamar (O'Toole) a singer dance who's on;y dream is to perform at the Copacabana.
Along the way the evil Rico - and owner of another club in Havana tried to steel mis Lamar away. She finds who she really love is Tony and in the end - well. You'll have to listen to Barry's song and you'll know what happens.
The movie is tastefully done and Barry although not a great actor - pulls it off well. Annette is very good and broad in her performance. Other cast members include Estelle Getty, James Callahan and Joeseph Balogna. There are not many extra's, but the movie is still entertaining. A family film. P.S. See my other Manilow Music Reviews and I have seen him 19 times in Person on tour!(8-15-02)

2.0 out of 5 stars The Least Of The Bunch - They All Can't Be Great!, Aug. 13 2002
Star Wars Episode II: The Phantom Menace is the first in the Star Wars stories according to George Lucas. I must say I enjoyed Attack Of the Clones much better than this one.
This movie was filled with too many creatures and special effects that made it seem like a merchandisers warehouse for all the future toys that were going to be released. The story too simple to be enjoyable and the one character that drove me crazy was Jar Jar Binks. I couldn't understand him and ended up hating him. The stand out performance for me was Liam Nielson and Ewan McGregor. The kid and Jar Jar could disappear and the movie might have improved. Natalie Portman was honest and simple but very convincing as the diplomatic ruler of the now failing senate.
That was the theatrical release for me - now the DVD release is much different. This multi-million dollar production works much better for me on the small screen. I can hear everything and skip past jar Jar when I want to. The visual effects and the technical aspects of the film are amazing.
The DVD also has tons of extras including some stuff for your PC. It also has several documentaries and several behind the scenes looks at the technical makings of the movies. It has prints and posters of all kinds. It is a good DVD for the Star Wars fan , but for the Sci-Fi fan -it's like Star Trek V- The Final Frontier - no one really wants it, but you got to have it because it is part of the series. Make sense? (8-13-02)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny, Inventive And Extremely Creative Steve O.!, Aug. 13 2002
This review is from: Thumbtanic (DVD)
Thumbtanic is another clever little short that makes me laugh. It has humor, sarcasm, wit and innuendos that are not always for children. (But the kids will love it.) They are actually Thumbs that have faces that will be superimposed on them.
It parodies very well Jim Cameron's Titanic very well. And duplicates scenes and situations that are all twisted and almost perverted at times but stay true the basic sarcastic tone of the original film. The story is the ship sinks in a very funny way and the funniest part is the theme My Thumb In My Heart. (A Celine Dion parody.)
Steve Oedekerk (Best known for the Ace Ventura films, Jimmy Neutron, The Nutty Professor and recently Kung Pao.) is the writer, producer and creator of several of these O Entertainment productions - including Bat Thumb, Thumb Wars and The Blair Thumb Project. He is slapstick and sarcastic in nature and these Thumbs have personality and an almost weird charm about them.
This is funny, short and they are technically well done. The art direction, special effects and even the music - which I thing is clearly superior - all make this adventure fun and exciting. To those who like oddball humor this is a must DVD to own. The extras include hysterical commentaries, outtakes, previews and storyboards. Get This DVD. (8-13-02)

Bat Thumb is a clever little short that makes me laugh. It has humor, sarcasm, wit and innuendos that are not always for children. (But the kids will love it.) They are actually Thumbs that have faces that will be superimposed on them.
It actually parodies the Tim Burton version of Batman (with Michael Keaton) and duplicates scenes and situations that are all twisted and almost ... at times. The story is Bat Thumb gets a new partner - not by choice - Blue Jay (not Robin) and has to defeat the evil 'No Face' (a thumb with no face on it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars This Star Trek DVD Is A Must! Rock On Kahn!, Aug. 13 2002
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn (Directors Cut) this is a fantastic DVD. Thanks to the genius that is Nicholas Meyer. He took the time to make a really great commentary and it is not your normal commentary either. He speaks of working with various types of actors, he speak with reverence at those who have established careers and he also gives praise to his technical wizards that made this film possible. Director Meyer is a very smart and obvious talented man.
The movie itself is my second favorite of all the Star Trek Movies. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is my favorite.) And the best one for watching adventure. (The Voyage Home has the better story and a lot of humor - by the way Nicholas Meyer also is credited as one of the co-writers on that film too!)
Meyer will tell you himself that being a 'story teller' is a big responsibility and he wanted to bring, reality, color, detail and a sense of humanity to this story. Also credit is due to Producer Harve Bennet for picking the story and getting the cast together to do this film. Most weren't interested in doing another due to the first film being not so critical success - although it was a big financial success.
Kahn was marooned on a planet back when the original series aired. He is back with a vengeance in this one. And he is mean. I won't tell you much more. Let's just say Kirk, Spock and McCoy have their hands full. There final battle scene is the best I have ever seen and the innate humor very real. This edition also contains many scenes that were not in the original.
Other extras on this DVD include interviews with the cast and crew and they are very specific, detailed and funny. There are even interviews that were done in 1982 when the movie was actually made. Also the screen menus are some of the best I have every seen. The only thing that is a little boring is the Star Trek Fan Writers - although noteworthy - not something I would have put on the disc.
This is a must for every sci-fi fan and a MUST for every Star Trek fan. This is two DVD's too! I hope they do this for the rest of the TEN films. Write me and let me know what you think! (8-12-02)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridley Scott Was At His Best!, Aug. 13 2002
This review is from: Legend (Ultimate Edition) (DVD)
Legend (Special Edition) this is probably my favorite of all the Ridley Scott films. The imagery and now the wondrous score of the original European release of Jerry Goldsmith music is back. I have always had the original score on CD but had never seen it to the movie.
What I did find interesting is that they had interviews with all the cast and crew except one person. Tom Cruise. And, ironically enough no one mentioned him either. Now be it 'star' attitude or the fact he would make himself available - either way this makes this DVD that much more special.
Ridley Scott during his commentary does mention Tom's talent and athletic abilities but he really does focus on Tim Curry (Darkness), Billy Barty (Troll), David Bennet (Gump) and Mia Sarrow (Lilly) and the technical aspects of making this movie.
The story is simple. Good verse Evil and Good triumphs. The visuals of the fairies and forest are incredible; one of the most beautiful things in the films is the Unicorns.
There are two versions of this film, (two DVD) one with the less respectable music of Tangerine Dream (although good - not appropriate ion my opinion) and one, which is the European release with the Jerry Goldsmith score. This DVD is a must for the sci-fi and fantasy collector. I watched it several times. (8-13-02)

4.0 out of 5 stars Cuba and Nichelle Are Surprisingly Good!, Aug. 13 2002
This review is from: Snow Dogs (Bilingual) (DVD)
Snow Dogs is a fun family film. Bryan Levant directed this film and you can tell because it does have that Flintstones quality to it. The whole family should like this movie. It's cute and has lots of furry dogs with incredible eyes. The only thing that bugged me a little is that Bryan is obnoxious in his commentary. He is very loud and sometimes annoying. Where the duel commentary with producer Jorden is much more calmer to listen to.
Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in this feature and I must say he is really a good physical actor. As you know, his Academy Award for Jerry McGuire proves he is a extremely gifted comedic actor, but in this movie not only is he funny, but he has great athletic bits as well.
The movie is about a Miami dentist who inherits a team of Snow Dogs that race every year in an Alaskan competition. There are some really great performances by Graham Green and the ever-ominous James Coburn as the bad guy. He is actually got a secret that Cuba doesn't know about. Once he decides to the dogs up north something happens that changes his mind and makes him enter the Mush races as well.
My favorite performance in this film is by far Nichelle Nichols. She is funny, elegant and very charming. She plays the concerned and overly conscious mother like no one I have seen. As you know, she is better known for her role as Commander Uhura in the Star Trek series and feature films.
The extras include some funny deleted scenes, the commentary and a DVD game where you have to ride a snowmobile. Its kind of fun. And very entertaining. Like I said this movie was a much more pleasant surprise than I expected and Nichelle steals the scene while Cuba does hold the film together. (8-13-02)
