2.0 out of 5 stars A Far Cry From Notting Hill, May 1 2003

I've always been a big fan of Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock and I was really looking forward to seeing the two of them together. I sincerely wanted to enjoy myself, but the one thing you heard ALL the critics agree upon about this film turned out to be absolutely true-- It's about as ordinary and unoriginal as a romantic comedy can be. The conflicting question among the critics was: Were Bullock and Grant able to turn a rather dull movie into something good? I didn't think so unfortunately. Heck, I don't even think the pairing of Superman and Wonder Woman could have saved this film. It certainly doesn't compare well to Grants previous picture, ABOUT A BOY.

My recommendation is not to waste your money on this movie unless you're a fan of these two actors... My final review is two and a half stars... Just too average and not many laughs.

Of all the 1000+ CDs I have owned in the past 15 years, I would easily consider PIECES OF YOU to be #1 or #2 on my all-time favorites list. After so many years I've NEVER grown tired of listening to it. It's a folk music masterpiece... brilliant from beginning to end! Unfortunately, her follow-up albums never even came close in comparison. Let's hope that one day the genius work inside of her will again see the light of day.

This movie clearly exemplifies why Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts have been at the top of their game over the last decade or so. It's not just a chick flick-- guys can get into it too!! It's an intelligent film with wonderful character development and lots of light-hearted fun as these two actors are always good at pulling off. I really want to see this pair together again someday!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Flawed, But Fun Ride, April 22 2003
First of all, it upsets me to see critics slamming this movie. True, the dialouge wasn't very good, but hey, this is Star Wars, not Shakespeare! The acting, in spite of some pretty good actors, didn't seem up to par and I often wonder if the fault lied not with the actors themselves, but rather the directing? Or should I say lack of direction towards these fine actors? It seemed like they ALL had a few stick-like moments, especially Natalie Portman.

At other times in the movie, I see what could have been very dramatic moments turn into something less than dramatic. Example: When Anakin gets seriously wounded in a lightsaber battle, it happens so quickly that you will miss it if you blink at the wrong moment. And where was the sweeping soundtrack during scenes like this? It seemed that composer John Williams was caught sleeping at certain points of the film because there was no great music to carry some of the potentially big moments.

All I'm saying is that I recognize the shortcomings that many of the critics were so brutal about, but by no means does it ruin the entire film, because I can happily say that this movie was thoroughly entertaining. It felt like the first time I saw a "real" Star Wars movie since I was a kid in 1983 (Let's face it, Episode 1 was not a real Star Wars movie) and it compares pretty darn well to the original trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Piano" will leave YOU speechless !!!, April 22 2003
I wouldn't even know how to describe this movie effectively, but I can begin by saying that it is truly a great masterpiece and a bargain at ANY price. Surprisingly, it is also extremely hard to find in stores. Rarely will you ever find a movie this original... And just when you think the film is coming to its end, something HUGE happens, and it is by far the most memorable and most artsy scene I have ever seen in ANY film before!!! Your jaw will drop to the floor! And the soundtrack is absolutely haunting... so perfectly suited for this picture. There is little else to say but BUY THIS DVD !!!

Whenever I find an unfavorable review for this film it really mystifies me. This is one of my favorite comedies!! Hugh Grant does his usual excellent job since this story serves as a PERFECT vehicle for his familiar cinematic personna. There are definitely some unforgettable scenes here...I'm talking about the botched up marriage proposal of course, and who can forget the part where James Caan has to teach Grant how to talk like a gangster?! There are soooo many laughs-- never a dull moment and a great bargain for such a fun movie! If you like Grant, this DVD is a must have! If you don't, then you cannot recognize a truly charismatic performer when you see one.

I must admit that when I first watched this movie in the theatre I didn't even care for it much. After a second (and third, and fourth) viewing however, I look back and don't understand why I couldn't recognize it for the truly great movie that it is. There is a ton of dry, "high-brow" humor here. Hugh Grant remains the cinema king of light-hearted humor... But let's hope he goes back to playing more likeable characters, which is what we know him best for.
