5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy!, July 1 2014
When I decided I wanted to start pressure canning (I've been waterbath canning fruits and fruit juices for years), I went to my local hardware and home supply store and bought the model they had, which was a Mirro. Unfortunately, the weight has a major design flaw, and I could never get it to do the rhythmic "jiggle" of it being at full pressure. I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working--I have plenty of experience with using a pressure cooker. The pressure was constantly rising and falling, even though my stove element was at a constant heat. And then after running it for an hour (I was canning meat, which needs to be processed for 75 mins) the bottom warped, even though there was over an inch of water still in the canner. I was extremely disappointed and returned it the next day.

After that, I did more research into pressure canners and decided on the Presto, as I didn't want to shell out over $300 for the All-American, and this one seemed to be the midline choice. I had no troubles with getting it up to pressure (or getting the pressure regulator weight to rock rhythmically). So far, I've run over 12 batches with my canner with no troubles. Very few jars have failed to seal (maybe 5 out of 100). I've canned chicken, broth, beef, milk, onions, garlic and potatoes. I've saved money, and the food tastes awesome! Plus I can control exactly what goes into it. I love that I can make a home-cooked meal ready in just 10 minutes that tastes like it's been simmering all day.

This canner says it can hold 10 standard pint jars in one layer, but there must be a slight variation in jar width where I live, because no matter what I do, I cannot get more than 9 pints per layer. One nice thing though--it says the maximum capacity is 7 quarts, but if you have some wide-mouth half-pints, you can also fit a layer of them above the quarts (just make sure you use another rack!), which was especially useful when canning chicken stock, if you like to have some smaller jars of stock for sauces.

It doubles as a water-bath canner as well. My old water-bath canner warped after only one season of use, so I was happy to have this one when I wanted to make pickles and also preserve a batch of cherries. No warping here.

This canner also comes with a 12 year warranty (that doesn't include parts that need replacement every three years, like the gasket or overpressure plug).

My small complaints are: the canner only includes one canning rack. I had to order a second rack separately (for doing two layers of jars) and it took a week longer to arrive than the canner did. Also, if you are at a lower altitude and want to run your canner at only 5 or 10 lbs of pressure, you need to invest in a convertible weight, or be willing to stand at your stove constantly adjusting the temp to keep it at the lower pressure. Since I am at 2000+ feet above sea level, I need to process at 15 lbs anyway, so this wasn't an issue for me.

Overall, I am very happy with my newest toy, and look forward to lots of canning in the future.

RAINING VIOLETS by Ruth Jean Dale
The way Carrie Duncan saw it, she had two choices. She could either marry Hank Brady as planned, or kill him. Unfortunately for him, cool logic prevailed and she did neither. But now, four months later, thrown together with Carrie as attendants at Hand's sister's wedding, Hand was learning the hard way that forgiving and forgetting was not in his ex-fiancee's vocabulary!

SHE'S THE ONE by Kate Hoffmann
Chase Donnelly had absolutely no intention of heeding his grandmother's prediction about the woman he'd marry. Though it was pretty strange that he encounted Natalie Hillyard the very next day. She fit the description to a T...but she was engaged to someone else. That did it! For Chase, the challenge of conquest was always irresistible!

The heat it on...

Katherine Inskip's life is at a complete standstill. She's overworked, stressed out and feeling blase about love--a bad state for the author of historical romances to find herself in. A vacation is what she needs--sun, sand and relaxation.

But on a beautiful South Seas island, Kate finds a whole lot more than she'd bargained for. Jared Hawthorne, owner of the island resort and resident swashbuckler, could have stepped off the pages of one of her books. He's her perfect fantasy--charming, adventureous and dashing--and more than willing to play the part. But could Jared have too much in common with his pirate ancestors?

He was her victim...

Amid the glittering decadence of the Brighton gaming hall, Jainee Beaumont cooly surveyed her prey. A year ago, Lord Southam had taught her that women were objects to be fondled and toyed with as discreetly as the cards or dice. Now she meant to show him how well she could play his game. The handsome nobelman was just what she needed. Under his protection, she would have access to London's highest circles--and her long-lost father. He'd never know he was being used until she'd gotten what she wanted. But Jainee had reckoned without Southam's knowing caresses and masterful kisses. And all too soon she realized she'd gambled everything only to lose to her own shameless desires!

She was his prey...

Southam watched his lovely opponent with narrowed eyes. Not long ago, she'd been a spirited guttersnipe, eager to carve his heart out. Now she'd become an elegan goddess, determined to wager her virtue for a voucher to Almack's. Though he'd come for an evening's play, nothing more, Southam couldn't resist meeting her challege. It would amuse him to unravel her tantalizing web of half-truths and temptations until he uncovered the woman beneath. And once he had her naked and wanting beneath him, he'd brand her as his with the fires of her own raging passion!

Deceiving appearances...

Her auburn hair tucked into a severe chignon, dressed in a shabby brown bombazine, Merrie Trelawney was the picture of dowdy widowhood and sober respectability. No one would guess that those demurely lowered eyelids hid a sparkle of pure adventure. Or that the white hands so modestly folded in her lap could handle a sword as well as any man. Certainly, no one would ever suspect her of being the notorious leader of the smuggler's band who called themselves "The Gentlemen"...

Dishonorable intentions...

Lord Rutherford who had just inherited some property in this godforsaken corner of Cornwall, looked upon the local gentry with distaste. The men were pompous and stuffy, and the women--that Merry Trelawney, for example--were utterly insipid. How that auburn-haired church mouse had managed to best him in their verbal sparring, was completely beyong him. But if she thought that he was finished with her, she was sadly mistaken. Something about her struck a falso note. And though he was not in the habit of seducing country widows, it might make an interesting change at that...
