Heartwarming series, Oct. 14 2008
ARIA is a unique series simply for the fact that it almost feels as if it's an anime that may never have been made if not for the tremendous amount of thought and care that was put into it. It really does not seem to have been simply churned out like so many other anime releases.
The series follows its adaptation of the manga closely enough, and in animated form will give the viewer as much a sense of discovery and wonder of Neo-Venezia as the characters experience themselves. The soundtrack is excellent and fits the mood of the show perfectly and series creator Kozue Amano's artwork is expertly brought to (animated) life.
Nozomi/RightStuf made a great decision in releasing the first season as a complete collection only. The boxset packaging is simple but well thought out. There are no English dubs, but only subtitles for the original Japanese voice track and since this release was really for the fans, all the bonus making-of and voice cast interviews are also included and subtitled.
It really may not be a series for everyone - there are no mind-bending story arcs or intense action scenes. Give it a chance though, and it will draw you in with its personality, humour and simple yet warm stories.
