2.0 out of 5 stars 2-disc or not two discs, May 26 2004
WARNING: All the five stars refer to the movie itself, and does not address the issue of whether paying for the second disc is a rip-off. Five stars for the single disc version was richly deserved. I had half expected the 2 disc version to have DTS since they shifted virtually all the extra features from disc 1 to disc two. The only thing left on disc 1 was the movie, same commentary, same subtitles and audio track. If they had an audio track with Audrey singing in place of Marni Nixon, it would have been a dream dvd. For some inexplicable reason, the single disc version was among the Amazon top 100 discs in 2002 for some time, although it has been out since the mid-90s. Amazon's editor was correct when he said the main attraction of the 2nd disc was the 58 minute Documentary hosted by Jeremy Brett. Move along folks, folks, nothing to see here, nothing really new unless you are time warped back one or two decades. A concise version of this documentary would be "The Fairest Fair Lady" which is already in the single disc version.
You already HAVE the Audrey Hepburn Vocals in the single disc version. The rest of the stuff in disc 2 is usually given away FREE, like in Gladiator, Last Samurai, Master and Commander, where one viewing of the stills is more than enough.
Now, the sellers of the 2-disc set have actually REMOVED the CAST AND CREW section found in the one disc version. This Cast and Crew with filmographies and biographies contain a huge chunk of valuable information including the fact that Audrey's given name was Edda, not Audrey. Do not throw away your one disc version. If you bought the 2 disc version, you might want to buy the single- disc version to find out where Audrey Hepburn was born, won the Oscar and got nominated. What were the other actors like Wilfred Hyde-White doing other than My Fair Lady.
I tell you what I like about the 2 Disc version:
1. the interviews with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison at the 1963 production Kickoff Dinner, with a couple of jokes from Mr Warner.
2. George Cukor directing Baroness Rothschild: a Henry Higgins coaching Eliza Doolitle parody. The audio track ran for only a few minutes, and I had a new found respect for Directors. Even a Baroness needs lessons in elocution. When I watch the movie again, I will imagine George Cukor speaking using the actors and actresses as his instrument. It explains how Cukor's actresses got their Oscars.
3. The Los Angeles Premiere in B&W is a few minutes of glitterati distraction.

The rest of Disc 2 is really scraping the floor of the store-room. For those who already own the single disc edition, and do not have disposable income to burn, get the 2 disc edition of the TEN COMMANDMENTS instead. For the price of 5 commandments (about half the price of the 2 disc My Fair Lady), you will get more than double the enjoyment, making it look like "the TWENTY COMMANDMENTS". That is where a second disc is not purely a money making exercise: thou shalt not steal from gullible covetuous dvd buyers.

Rex Harrison Golden Globe Acceptance is a clip from the Andy William's show, where he apologised for not being at the real event, so he accepted it on AW's show. Shame.

Academy Awards Cermony Highlights: just one minute or less of Mr Warner accepting the oscar for best picture. Not one bit of the other awards at all.

So two stars for the additional info on disc two. I would buy anything remotely related to my favourite musical, but if I were to search my heart for value added, I would say two extra stars is very very generous. Now, if ever they come out with a DTS version, we will have to throw the whole TWENTY COMMANDMENTS at this bunch of crooks.
Do you really need Martin Scorsese and Andrew Lloyd Weber's comments to supplement your own?

5.0 out of 5 stars Kristian Alfonso - see more about her, Oct 9 2002
This review is from: Army of One (Full Screen) (DVD)
Too bad we do not get to see many movies with Kristian Alfonso. Great pairing with Lundgren. Two relatively under-rated stars. Action to rival a James Bond movie of circa 1992 vintage. For the money, this is a worthwhile purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Picture quality an eye-strain, Sep 3 2002
This review is from: Flambards (DVD)
With so many good series to watch, the ordeal of an eye-stain is just not worth it. I felt the people who released this dvd took their customers for granted.

I have no quarrel with the material. I like all things British. I collect Telephone Kiosks, Pillar letter boxes, and British swords. Having worked in UK for several years, I have an acquired taste for British films.

Watching this on a small screen 14 inch TV helps to reduce eye-strain. There are no sub-titles. As this genre of movies tend to be watched when the brats are asleep, sub-titles help in allowing the volume to be kept down.

We know this stuff is dated. Nobody is expecting the picture quality of Gosford Park or Pride and Prejudice. But save this purchase until you have seen the rest. Test your eyesight tolerance with Sorrell and Son. Sorrell and Son will of course get the 5 star reviews.

If you have the stomach for the picture quality of Sorrel and Son, you still have some way to go before you can cope with the picture quality of the Flambards.

Be warned. People who buy this sort of dvd usually do not have the time or want to put up with the hassle of returning them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unwatchable. I want my money back, Sep 3 2002
This review is from: Upstairs Downstairs S3 (DVD)
I am not financially challenged. I buy lots of A&E stuff. I read reviews that the first two series were bad in the dvd transfer. OK. I tried the third series.

If this is deemed acceptable, then the first two series must be absolutely horrible. The picture is unwatchable. Do not buy this under any circumstances. Imagine watching a third or fourth generation video tape copy when lightning is going on messing up your electricals. Well, this is how your screen is going to look like. I have seen better with bootlegged pirated Malaysian vcds.

If you are into English accent, stick to the A&E romantic series, Pride and Prejudice and so on. There is no English subtitling in this horrid third series. But you can accept Pride and Prejudice because the widescreen version is so much clearer than the local TV broadcast of the same.

Sorrell and Son from Granada is about as bad as one can take. Buy Sorrell and Son first. If you can accept the low quality, then downgrade to the Flambards. And if you are half blind, you may then try Upstairs, Downstairs.

Hey, nobody is expecting Gosford Park standard. We know the stuff is aged. But this? Buyer beware!!! after this review, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extended edition badly needed, Aug 28 2002
Every scrap of film should be picked up from the floor and the dvd made into an extended edition. Enough stars given for the movie itself. There are already 186 reviews on this movie. The really good stuff is in the DELETED SCENES. Usually, deleted scenes contain seconds, but I was convinced that the primary cuts were in the DELETED SCENES.

There was this heart-renching scene in the church as the helicopters swooped in on a Sunday. A few minutes of this academy award standard material beats the daylights out of the first full hour of Pearl Harbor. How different the effects of depicting similar scenes on a lazy Sunday. The scene cuts poignantly to an ambulance-chopper. Rates at least five Kleenex tissue boxes.

I first wondered what Julia Roberts was doing in the movie on my first browse. Then I realised that the producers saved $20 million bucks by casting the lovely and talented Madeline Stowe.

Then there was the Sergeant Sam Elliott doing the full monty. I thought the director wanted us to examine his battle-scars as substitutes for medals. About face to a full frontal of Sarge with a stack of medals around his naked chest, including two Medals of Honor.

The scene where a yet to be promoted Lt Colonel was being debriefed by General Westmoreland and the Secretary of State was absolutely PRICELESS. Shows the mismatch in the perception of the war by actual combatants and political leaders from day one.
I noticed the Eagles on Mel Gibson's shoulders when he came home, instead of the oak leaves throughout the movie.
He retired a Lt-General, not as a Light Colonel.

Watch the DELETED SCENES for yourself. Alone, they are worth the price of the dvd. I am sure there is much more in the vaults. Somehow WE WERE SOLDIERS II: the sequel would just dishonour the original, so lets get the extended edition ASAP, by yesterday.

1.0 out of 5 stars thanks for the helpful review, Aug 15 2002
After reading the one star review, I was really glad to have checked reviews before buying it. As a doctor, I really have no problems spending thousands of dollars per month on dvds. But once you get a lemon, you are very very annoyed. I must thank the reviewer for pointing out the poor transfer to dvd. As for myself, I am a Kitaro fan. Hey, how can you do justice to Kitaro with a MONO soundtrack. Joke, right?
