4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Picture!, Jun 27 2004
If you are an Elvis fan, this 2 DVD set is one that needs to be in your collection. Capturing the historic Hawaii concert, the DVD brings home the sights and sounds in terrific 5.1 Digital sound and truly wonderful pictures. Not only does it provide the original USA broadcast of the 1973 concert, it also has the original feed that was shown live to most of the world (the US did not see it until weeks later). Also provided is the rehersal show the night before and raw video of Elvis arriving to greet fans. The reason to buy the package, though, is the sound. It is obvious that a reat deal of care went into presenting the music in the 2 DVDs. A great job is also done with recreating the original live show, using the original video, which looks like it could have been shot this year. For fans of Presley or those who have an appreciation for the history of rock, this is one worth owning.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a K, but not quite a basehit either, Mar 9 2004
This is a book I wanted to like from the start. I thought it sounded quirky, and I kind of like quirky- well, OK I am quirky, so I thought the book would be a good fit. Baseball book, oddball characters, unusual setting, everything I would typically enjoy. I have read a fair amount of baseball themed literature and was looking forward to this effort. The problem is, the book did not quite reach me. The baseball didn't ring quite true, but mostly, the characters did not work for me. Others clearly like this book, and that's OK, I have read much worse than this, and Miller clearly had good intentions in writing the book, but it falls short. Of course maybe my expectations were too high but I think the fault lies more with the multiple story lines, which merge a little too neatly for my taste. Having said all that, I would still give Miller another shot. After all, writing is like hitting- nobody bats 1.000.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pot of Gold at the end of this Adventure, Jan 16 2004
This is a great example of what makes the DVD format so wonderful. A great, classic movie with wonderful commentaries, intersting short subjects, a cartoon, and many other extras. The documentary on John Huston is well done and interesting as is the feature on the film itself. And what a film! Great acting, writing and terrific direction make this a classic. The story still holds up today as do the performances of Humphrey Bogart and Walton Huston. Huston desrved his Oscar that year, and the fact that Bogie was not even nominated has to be one of the all time worst decisions of the Academy. He is brilliant in his role as the surly, menacing Fred Dobbs. Everything about this movie works- it deserves its place on AFI's 100 Greatest Movies list. This is a perfect gift for anyone who loves really good movies.

Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Writing, great legacy, Nov 4 2003
I have read a great many baseball books over the years and usually don't have a particularly high hope for the writing of most biographies, especially when the subject is still alive. Either the writing comes off as trying to impress too hard or the writer is trying to make his or her reputation off the subject. That is not true in this case. Ms. Leavy is a wonderful writer and she works hard to create an honest portrait of one of the all time great pitchers, Sandy Koufax. The style of the book, intersecting his perfect game with his life will delight baseball and non-baseball fans alike. Her discussion of Koufax and his faith is thought provoking and well developed. She also provides a glimpse into the 1950's in Brooklyn that is terrific. This book certainly ranks as one of the finest baseball related books to be published in some time, and unlike the Cubs who were silenced by Koufax on that great night in 1965, this book contains plenty of hits. Read it- give it as a gift. This is a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Island, love the Book, Oct 28 2003
This is a great guide book. My wife and I used it for 12 days recently visiting Maui and found it incredibly helpful. The dining reviews are right on the mark (though one great place, Lahiana Fish Co.-is not in this edition), and the tips to get around the island are very helpful. We found the great banana bread and some little special places that were recommended. I can't imagine visiting the island without this book, and apparently others could not as well. We saw many copies in other people's hands. This is the only guide book you need when visiting Maui!

Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
de Jon Krakauer
Édition : Hardcover
Price: CDN$ 23.31

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Moving, Sep 21 2003
Jon Krakauer continues to write brilliant, well-researched books that make the reader think long after completing the book. Following up Into Thin Air and Into the Wild with another terrific book seemed unlikely, but Krakauer has managed to do it. His look at a tragic double murder, and the Mormon Fundamendalist movement, will shock and outrage most rational people. He gives us an insight into a part of America that most of us will never see. As terrible as the murders were, the most horrifying aspect of the book is the disregard that these groups have for women, and their use of underage innocent girls in the name of religion. For someone who enjoys non-fiction, this is a terrific read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, funny, interesting- a fun read!, Jun 19 2003
This book by Stefan Fatsis contains the drama, excitement and heartbreak that one expects from a well-written sports book. Of course, this is not a sports book but rather a book about SCRABBLE- the game and the world's best players. Fatsis becomes a part of the action and captures his obsession to become an expert player perfectly. He starts out by gently mocking the players but by the end he is including himself as one of the word-studying freaks in his pages. Fatsis is a terrific writer and makes SCRABBLE strategy entertaining to the reader. The obsessive players that he writes about could as easily be addicted to collecting baseball cards, playing backgammon or any other activity. The game is a wonderful backdrop to the quirky characters, including himself, that the author introduces to us. Whether you played the game or not, the book will capture your imagination. It is a game of words but the word the book most often brings to mind is entertaining. Who knows, you may want to engage in a little SCRABBLE of your own once you finish this book. If you enjoy well-written non-fiction sprinkled with humor and wit, this is a great book for you, even if you don't know the last word in the Official SCRABBLE Player's Dictionary- zyzzyva- a tropical weevil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!, May 12 2003
This two-disc set really should be a lesson to everyone else who is releasing DVD's today. Full of great extras, two different versions of the film, some cool easter eggs and wonderful commentary, this is a perfect DVD set. First off, the movie is wonderful- it really did not get the attention it deserved when it came out. The acting, writing, soundtrack- all wonderful. Every performance is wonderful- not a weak actor in the film though I have to give a special nod to Philip Seymour Hoffman as rock critic Lester Bangs- just a great fit. Based on Director Cameron Crowe's life as a teen writing for Rolling Stone in the 1970's- the movie has a gentle touch to it with a delightful love story and a fair amount of laughs. The sound (both Dolby Digital and DTS) is great as is the picture quality. The extras are many and the disappointments few. Crowe's mom rocks as she watches a part of her life on the screen. This is a fun package. This is a DVD that should be part of the collection of anyone who enjoys good movies and the potential fulfilled of a great DVD package. Keep rocking Stillwater!

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific History- Reads like fiction but its not!, Mar 25 2003
I admit that I started reading this book with a couple of built in biases- first, I enjoyed his previous book, Issac's Storm, and second I have always loved Chicago, the home of my wife, great architecture, and two baseball teams! So I hoped to like this book and I was not disappointed. Set in Chicago during the great Columbia Exposition of 1893, it is able to immerse you in the place and the time. Well written and researched, Larson writes with the timing of a novelist, bringing you into the dark world of Dr. Holmes, the devil in this book, and the White City, the amazing fair put together in a little more than two years by one of this country's great architect's, Daniel Burham. Though almost half the book is about Dr. Holmes, a grisley mass murderer, Larson spares us much of the gory details in favor of describing Chicago and the United States as it prepared to enter the 20th century. Larson keeps your interest with great little snippets about such characters as Buffalo Bill, Fredrick Law Olmstead, and other figures from America's past. The background to how the White City came to past is fascinating and provides a window on a time when civic pride meant everything. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Chicago, architecture, or true life crime stories. As much as I enjoyed Issac's Storm, Larson tops himself with this latest effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great island!, Mar 8 2003
I have used this book during my visit to Kauai, and it is a great guide to steer you to the wonderful spots on the island. The book is written in a useful format that is easy to follow while you visit the island. The reviews of hotels and resturants are fair and are very helpful. The directions are wonderful and easy to use. This is what a guidebook should be like all the time. The pictures are wonderful and are an accurate representation of what you see during your visit. This book is a great investment before you go to help narrow down all the great things you will want to do on the island. The description and location of all the beaches was dead-on correct. I enjoyed reading it on the plan ride to Hawaii and have looked at it since I got back to give me ideas for my next visit. It is the best guidebook I found to Kauai!
