JULIUS CAESAR (PLAYERS' SHAKESPEARE)
JULIUS CAESAR (PLAYERS' SHAKESPEARE)
by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Edition: Hardcover
6 used & new from CDN$ 1.27

1.0 out of 5 stars This story was meant for the stage, Jan 11 2012
Haha, I bought this book used and it was obviously from a school. One of the students wrote on the inside cover, "Use the Cole's notes. They're faster." I must agree.

Or better yet, if you want to experience Shakespeare's telling of Julius Caesar then contact your local theatre company and request it.

This review is from: Antony and Cleopatra (Paperback)
This play was never meant to be read in a book and should be enjoyed in a theatre. A university class is the only reason I purchased this book and I had to force myself to read it. If you want to experience Shakespeare's telling of Antony and Cleopatra, then call your local theatre company and request it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every man will cry, Jan 11 2012
This is a powerful story. I read it in my early 20s and it helped me to comprehend the complexity of human relationships.

3.0 out of 5 stars I remember enjoying this book, Jan 11 2012

I remember reading this book in the mid-90s while in university. It's powerful at times, tender at others. Worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars I didn't read past the first chapter, Jan 11 2012
I have enjoyed many of Margaret Atwood's books. This wasn't one of them. I am not sure whether to blame it on the book or the timing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not better than online sources, Jan 11 2012
Let's be honest. This book was published in 1937. Many things have changed a great deal since then and there are online sources which are simultaneously more in-depth and more accessible.

I might be in favour of using this text in eBook format because I'm sure it has helped many scholars in the past. However, if it's ever printed again it will be a waste of paper.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not necessary, Jan 11 2012
I own this book because it was required for a class in university. "Required" but not actually used in that class. The contents of the book appear interesting but my life is neither diminished nor enriched having owned and read or not read this book.

A better way to experience the concepts in this book would be to gather in a coffee shop with excellent teachers and ask them to talk about their classrooms.

Choral Techniques
Choral Techniques

1.0 out of 5 stars Obsolete and expensive, Jan 10 2012
This review is from: Choral Techniques (Spiral-bound)
I can't believe this text is so expensive. It was expensive in the early 90s when I had to buy it for a university course, and it's still over-priced.

It's obvious to me that the publisher and the author have enjoyed significant royalties from this book since 1974 and have enjoyed a relative monopoly being that it's been used so frequently by choral instructors throughout North America. Rather than lower the price in response to their success (to provide greater value to their customers at a lower cost) they have kept this price as high as the market can bare and instructors simply haven't paid attention to the effect that has had on their students' bank accounts.

Why any instructor would insist that this text is "required reading" for a university course these days is beyond me!? There's nothing in this text that cannot be gained from the multitude of free sources of information and exercises online. Not only is this text obsolete, but the fact that it's still being sold at such high prices is frankly shameful.

My advice to students: buy it used or not at all. There are plenty of used copies around and there's a great chance that you'll never use this text after finishing your music degree.

Guide to Teaching Strings

Edition: Spiral-bound

1.0 out of 5 stars Obsolete and expensive, Jan 10 2012
I don't mean that the content is obsolete -- just the media. This book was expensive when I had to buy it in the early 90s and obviously it's still a cash cow for the publisher. Considering the amount of related content online these days, it's hard to understand why string instructors still force their students to buy this book!?

A tip for all university students: buy it used! There are millions, by now, of these texts collecting dust on shelves all over North America (and elsewhere no doubt). You will use it through your semester, then there's a GREAT chance you'll never open it again.

I don't mean that the CONTENT is obsolete -- actually it's top notch. I mean that the medium is obsolete and that the publisher should be ashamed of the price they've been charging all these years. It was expensive when I had to buy it in the early 90s and obviously it's still a cash cow for the publisher.
