5.0 out of 5 stars We're mad as hell!, July 16 2004
'Network' should be seen together with 'EdTv' and 'The Truman Show'. They all show the effect of television on people and also what goes on behind the scenes, the eternal fight for higher ratings, no matter what it is about.
Faye Dunaway wants to try everything to get higher ratings, she is so obsessed that even life has become a scenario to her, she almost has no ties to 'normal' life anymore, everything has become a spectacle.
When a newsbroadcaster tells his audience he is going to kill himself on tv in two weeks hell breaks loose. No one cares about human life, it's all about ratings. They would go as far as they can possibly go...

4.0 out of 5 stars Three Mile Island: A Warning, July 16 2004
This movie came out a year before the incident at Three Mile Island but it is freakishly alike.
A news-reporter is making an item at a nuclear power plant and sees an incident happening right before her eyes. The camerman (Michael Douglas) tapes it all and gives to tape to the anti-nuclear people.
First the corperation does not want to come out and says nothing has happened. One of the people working at the plant (Jack Lemmon) get regrets and wants to come out. The movie has it's highpoint in the end, in the contral room of the plant...
It is a very important movie to show to people the dangers of nuclear power plants and especially the role of human error. Still topical after 25 years, a must-see

5.0 out of 5 stars 1984, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies, Truman Show!, July 15 2004
This review is from: Truman Show (Widescreen) (DVD)
Who would have thought that 'The Truman Show' would be entered among the great literary and movie classics ever made. Where 1984 gives a bleak look at a government who looks at everything and Brave New World about cloning, The Truman show is the premierve movie about the most horrible of all television rages in the last 10 years: Reality-TV.
But in this case Truman does not it. The awful outside world has made him into an item of fun, a person used for the amusement of others.
Are we all watchers or maybe in a way all Trumans? Trying to get out if this spectacle called life?
Deep, great, wonderfullly acted and a seminal movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good settings, bad script, July 15 2004
This review is from: The Majestic (Widescreen) (DVD)
Funny that a movie about a scriptwriter has a very sweet but unimaginable scenario. From the moment on you have a pretty good idea about what is going to happen. Making the 2,5 hours a long sit.
Guy is wanted for communist sympathies - gets amnesia - ends up in a town where they think he is someone else - they find out - he goes back but understands that life is better there than in 1950s LA.
The end is even a little too moralizing: The Constitution is open for every belief, even communism!!
The acting is however fine, Jim Carrey shows again he is a lot more than the Mask and he almost reaches the standard he set for himself in the superb 'Truman Show', Martin Landau is sweet as his 'father'.
The settings of the movie are great, the feeling of the 1950 is perfectly shown. The warm cosiness of a small town glows from the screen and the setting of the movietheater is great.
Too bad it's so incredibly predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life Ain't So Bad!, July 14 2004
This review is from: Daisies Of The Galaxy (Audio CD)
eels' 'Electro-Shock Blues' was dark and gloomy. DotG starts with a fanfare, horns that set the stage for a happy song. And Grace Kelly blues is a happy song, though the content is a little sad. Just an acoustic guitar (mostly capoed) and sometimes a piano are the instruments mostly used. Keyboards are a favorite instrument and many organ sounds like in 'Tiger in my Tank'
There has never been an eels-album that has made me happier than this one.
'God**** right it's a beautiful day'!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and some beautiful songs., July 14 2004
This review is from: Electro-Shock Blues (Audio CD)
The sound-songs with many samples and grooves have never compelled me in the eels. It is sometimes a little too much. Unfortunately half of this album are songs like this. Fortunately there are also some very beautiful 'songs'.
Songs like Climbing Up To The Moon and Ant Farm are acoustic, slow songwriter higlights on this album. 3 Speed has the best lyrics.
A funny song is Last Stop This Town. A fun, uptempo happy song which falls a little out of place but it maybe the best song on the album. Another good eels album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Debut, a little up and down but a classic, July 14 2004
This review is from: Beautiful Freak (Audio CD)
Mark Everett had already made some albums under the name of "E". 'Beautiful Freak' was the first album under the name of Eels, hoping that his E albums would be standing next to the new ones, totally forgetting about bands like the Eagles.
The first track of this album to be released is the indie-classic 'Novocaine for the soul' with a great sample and piano intro. Many instruments are used on this album. Piano, Guitar, Banjo and many samples making it an interesting album to listen to. There are no bad songs and some very good ones. Beloved Monster is fun, Spunky very sweet. The quality of songs got better after this album, but this one is very diverse.

To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown : An Autobiography
by Berry Gordy

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, though a little self-centered., July 14 2004
It is always hard to believe autobriographies, especially in the music-biz where people are fighting others constantly for power, money and all those things. Since Berry Gordy is a controversial figure, we have to doubt it.
Doesn't take away the fact that is interesting seeing the rise of his Motown label through his eyes. He discoverd many acts and also wrote and produced many hits in the 50's through 80's. Jackie Wilson, Martha Reeves, Mary Wells, The Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations and Miracles all are very much part of the Gordy legacy.
He started as a boxer, admiring Joe Louis before turning to music. One of his earliest friends was Smokey Robinson, someone who he also admired and who never turned his back to him. Something the Jackson 5 did, though they were almost part of his family.
His familymember were often married to people from his company. Jermaine Jackson and Marvin Gaye for example. He himself married often and had more than 8 children with 4 different wives, including Diana Ross.
It is very interesting to read about how he felt about the music business and Motown, but doubt the honesty

4.0 out of 5 stars Even good with overdubs, July 13 2004
This review is from: Ninja Scroll (DVD)
The thing that bothers me the most with Anime from Asia is the sometimes horrible overdubs in English that sound flat and unimaginative. Ninja Scroll (and Princess Mononoke) is an exception.
The drawings are as always superb and the story line is as well. This story is about Ninjas in 16th century Japan, but with supernatural powers. REally interesting.
It is very graphic and the language is sometimes very coarse, does make it more 'real' in some strange way or another.
Really good movie, watch it twice, once in Japanese, once in English and be surprised

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good now, July 12 2004
This review is from: Parenthood (Full Screen) (DVD)
When I first saw this movie about 7 years ago I did not like it. I did not get why it was so funny back then and thought it all rather sad.
But I tried and it was worth it! It is sometimes very gripping in what happens in the lives of people, though it is sometimes a little exaggerated, like in an Irving book.
It is also funny. The things that happen in itself are hilarious, and sometimes also there are some funny things interspersed ("Take Grandma away from the Nintendo").
The part of Keanu Reeves is also interesting. He plays a dumb guy like in Bill and Ted's excellent adventure. There is a touching scene where he talks to his wife's mother about her son's masturbation ("That's why little dude's do"). Even though he is the stupidest, he has the best advice.
Tom Hulce is brilliant as the youngest gambler son. The dad, useless in the beginning, now finally realized what he has to do.
It is a funny movie and sometimes touching. One of the better Steve Martin movies.
