Incredible, Aug 24 2011
This book is incredible. Steyn pulls out remarkable one-liners on every single page. The book is fantastic, get it anyway you can. MatthewO1991, your review is an ad hominem. I understand why you did that, you disliked the ideas expressed but they are impervious to genuine criticism, so just attack the author instead.

Broken Record, Nov 29 2010
Win the Noble Prize and you have license to publish any old tat. This old committed communist only had a few things to say and kept coming back to them in redundant essay after redundant essay. Ok, you side with the Palestinians over the Israelis, fine, you don't have to tell me every third essay. His thoughts range from Utopian to Dystopian, doesn't make for nice reading.

Sharp, Nov 29 2010
Jarrell had one of the sharpest literary minds you will ever come across. I loved this book, his criticism is beyond comparison. Really enjoyable.

Great stuff, Nov 29 2010
I loved this book, it is one of my favorites. I'm a fan of Scotland, the 70s and directionless young people, so it was a real fun read. Makes you nostalgic for the good old light house days.

Not so great, Nov 29 2010
I wanted to like this book, but I didn't. Very little discussion about books, which was strange. No flow to the stories, just bits and bobs of unconnected information mixed with jibber jabber mixed with personal reminiscing that had nothing to do with anything. Give it a miss.

Sad, May 13 2009
I could only read this book once. It's like a horror story. I'm truly ashamed to be Canadian. Good luck Ezra.

Realistic?, Oct 30 2008
This woman suggests that you should ask your child's teacher for permission to come and watch a class, and evaluate the teacher. Think about that. Yes, teachers are paid by taxpayers, but so are doctors, nurses, police officers, fire fighters, etc. Imagine phoning them up and going: Hi there, I just want to come watch you work and evaluate you because I just read a book and now I know more than you do. This woman is not realistic, and just proves my theory to be very careful of any teacher's advice who couldn't hack it and left the classroom.

Brilliant, Jun 18 2008
If I could only save one book from my library, this would be it. I enjoyed these stories immensely. Forget all the so-called "classics" which are better placed in a seminar for PhD students, this is a real story with real punch. An absolute joy to read. I await the day teachers and professors use this, instead of the usual tat.

garbage, Jun 18 2008
I've been reading my entire life, this is only the third book I have ever put away, unfinished, and disgusted. I am ashamed to have bought it. The stories are neither funny, nor enlightening in anyway. I assume people only buy it because of the title, and when they open it, the first story is decent. The rest is simply garbage. I was hoping to find the female equivalent to Tucker Max's- I hope they serve beer in Hell, which is FUNNY. Gillespie failed miserably. Avoid at all costs, unless you need something to set your drinks on so they don't leave ring marks on your table.
