5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic season of Newsradio, Sept. 3 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was an absolute gem of a show that got moved around the network schedule far too often. Sadly, the show was cancelled after its 5th season, although at that point, probably deservedly so. With the departure of Phil Hartman after season 4, it just wasn't the same show. That's not to say the show became bad, it just became average.

During season 3 Newsradio was still in peak form, and is one of the all-time best sitcoms on television.

If you like great sitcoms, this is one of the best you'll find, along with Arrested Development, Cheers, and Seinfeld.

With Newsradio, the 5th season is the only one where purchasing the set is debatable. Personally, I'll be getting it just to finish the set. This (along with season 4, and seasons 1&2) are unmissable!

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest show EVER on television, Sept. 3 2006
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I just got Season Three and have only watched most of the first disc, but I've seen them all on TV anyway. Even though they knew the writing was on the wall and the show was about to be cancelled, they still held nothing back and this season is just as funny as the first two.

The only drawback to the show was that it had to be closely followed by the viewer, or you'd miss the humour which is probably why the show never had good ratings, much like Police Squad. Let's hope the rumours are true about an AD movie.

Another complaint about the show by critics was that too much of the humour was "insider humour" and that the average viewer wouldn't get it. While that is true, I don't think it takes away from the show to the casual TV viewer, but makes it so much more funny to those who understand it.

If you're on the fence about the purchasing the series, I encourage you to get them all. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT season 2!, Oct. 13 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This show truly is a gem. It was supposed to have been cancelled after season one, but emmy nominations (and win for best new comedy) probably saved it that year. I'm not sure if it was cancelled at the end of season 2 or not (which is why there are only 18 episodes when the usual season order is for 22) but luckily again, Fox renewed it. I'm not sure what they're commitment to the show is, but hopefully they'll keep it around. It would be a travesty if they cancelled it at this point.
I pre-ordered this set ASAP and have only watched the first 3 episodes thus far (I've only owned the set for 2 days), but I've watched the show religeously on Fox and I can honestly say season 2 is even superior to season 1. Perhaps the producers knew it could be the last season before being cancelled and went all out in making these.
The only potential drawback to Arrested Development would be that you have to pay attention. The jokes and set-ups come fairly quickly and if you're not watching, you'll miss them. If you like quick, witty, intelligent humour, this show is for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars An incredible series, but easily the worst season, Oct. 13 2005
I'm not trying to make The Simpsons sound like a bad show or anything because it's one of my favourites, but the first season they were still working out a lot of the kinks, finding their identity. The episodes are "fine" which is the reason for the 3-star rating, but not the great ones that they started doing once season 2 started.
This set is strictly for completists (like myself), although the comments by Matt Groening on the inside of the cover should be worth an extra half-star.
It's good, but ALL the other seasons are better.

5.0 out of 5 stars This show is PERFECT!, Sept. 26 2005

There's not a ton to add that others haven't already written, but this show truly is a gem. It was supposed to have been cancelled after season one but winning the Emmy for best new comedy series probably gave it a bit of a reprive. I believe it was supposed to have been cancelled after season two, but luckily again, Fox renewed it. I'm not sure what they're commitment to the show is, but hopefully they'll keep it around. I believe DVD sales have been good, so maybe they won't screw up and and cancel it only to have to put it back on the air like Family Guy (another outstanding show).
The only potential drawback to Arrested Development would be that you have to pay attention. The jokes and set-ups come fairly quickly and if you're not watching, you'll miss them.
This is, however, the best original sitcom to come around for a LONG time, and it easily one of the best, PERIOD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big let down, June 15 2005

I want to start by saying that I am a huge fan of the South Park show, Bigger, Longer, and Uncut is one of my all-time favourite movies, and I loved Team America. That being said, I was really disappointed by this movie.
It's not totally without laughs, but after watching it once, I decided right then and there that I didn't want to watch it a second time. If you're a Trey Parker/Matt Stone fan, get their other stuff first, and this one ONLY if you want to complete the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, this gem of a sitcom on DVD!, May 31 2005
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This, in my opinion, was one of the few sitcoms worth watching in the mid to late 90's. It had one of the finest ensemble casts ever put together, and it's hard to find a weak link among actors.
Delivering the best lines is Phil Hartman. After watching these episodes again it shows just how tragic a loss it was when he was shot to death in his sleep after the 4th season (and replaced by friend and SNL alumus Jon Lovitz who also appears in an earlier episode). High marks also to Stephen Root who plays station owner Jimmy James, as well as Dave Foley who plays the station manager (formerly of Kids in the Hall).
Perhaps this show wouldn't have been as good as it was without the talents of producer Paul Simms, who also worked on The Larry Sanders Show, and viewers of both shows will notice some similarities.
If you're on the fence about whether or not to buy this, I highly recommend giving it a shot. If you like quality sitcoms, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC READ!!!, Oct. 29 2003
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There are other great reviews so I'll be brief. This is a fantastic book. Freddie is brutally honest, although it isn't exactly a tell-all book either. If it was, it would have to be a LOT longer because he was in the business for so long.
It's one of the best books on wrestling published, although I think even non-wrestling fans would enjoy the stories, despite the "colourful" language at times.
It may not quite be in the league with Mick Foley's books which should be most people's first choice, but I would highly recommend it if those were already read. Also a good one to check out is Lou Thesz's autobiography called "Hooker."
