4.0 out of 5 stars Well done - but not for teens ..., May 23 2011
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: LA Noire (Video Game)
This is an excellent game for adults: great 1950's music, authentic cars, amazing acting, well designed face animation and a large and detailed city (as well as rooms, environments, etc.). The controls are easy to learn and manouver. The different stories are solid.

The reason I gave this game 4 out of 5 stars is because, although there's 20 plus missions, some missions do get repetitive. In addition, it seems that no matter what you do, you always solve the case. You have 3 options when interacting with suspects, witnesses, leads, etc. - truth, doubt and lie. Even if you get everything wrong, you still solve the cases. I wish that wasn't so - i.e. if you don't get the right clues, you can't finish the case.

This game is not GTA 4. You can't go shooting, kiling, driving erratically, etc. throughout the city without negative consequences. If you don't like investigating, looking for clues, interrogating, driving responsibly, then this game is NOT for you. It's definitely a mature, well done, game - kind of reminds me of MAFIA 1 but from the perspective of the police (as opposed to the gangster). Well done Rockstar! Well done.

Those suffering from claustrophobia will not be helped by watching this movie as it appears that if you wake up buried in a box, you'll probably die there. Another movie that after you watch it you ask yourself: why? What was the point of this movie? Does it make you reflect on being stuck in a place or confront your fears? Not sure I understood the point. 1 star.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not well thought, Mar 26 2011
This review is from: Skyline (DVD)
I gave this movie 1 star because it lacked a convincing plot. In a nut shell, aliens, who have far more advanced technology than us, come to Earth, behave worst than savages and their only goal is to eat people's brains. It begs the question: why? Never mind that it mostly had B actors and mediocre computer-generated animation. If movies like Independence Day or District 9 had well-thought out plots and some logic behind them, Skyline has none of the above.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bugs & Glitches, Nov 1 2010
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Fallout New Vegas (Video Game)
If you bought a high-end super-luxury sedan that had its engine on the back seat bench, the transmission in the engine compartment, the windshield in the trunk and the headlights on its side doors, would you rate it high just because it's a high-end luxury car? I think not. I would think you'd want it fixed so you could drive it properly.

In the same vein, I really don't understand how people can rate FNV five stars. It is well known in the gaming community that FNV has some rather disturbing bugs and glitches. The company released last week a patch that's supposed to fix over 200 bugs. Despite the patch, people are still having issues (Pip-boy freezing comes to mind). Past Fallout games have been amazing, and no doubt FNV will be one as well, once the bugs and glitches have been fixed. Until then, this game is unfortunately broken. 1 out 5 stars. Not impressed at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very poor sequel to Mafia, Sep 4 2010
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mafia II (Video Game)
Very disappointed. Here's the thing:

Mafia 1: 20 missions (plus tutorial mission, plus side-missions), 51 different cars (plus another bonus 19 cars), freeride mode, freeride extreme mode, fully workable tram and subway systems, great characters and above all, an amazing story: Tommy Angelo is forced to join the mob and questions himself, his actions and those around him throughout - making you reflect on society's interpretation of law and order.

By contrast,

Mafia 2: 15 missions (tutorial is the first mission, no side-missions), 36 different cars, no freeride, no freeride extreme mode, no tram system, over-the-top stereotypical characters and unfortunately, a very poor story: Vito Scaletta is a thoughtless thug who, after going to war and prison, is still a thug, obeying orders without any question. Ironically, had the story been about Vito's friend, Joe Barbaro, undoubtedly, the game could have been much better, as he is one of the few characters that's actually enjoyable.

I will not spoil the story for you, suffice to say, that there is no thoughtful theme (as Mafia 1 had) or any kind of mental stimulation -- on the contrary, some of the missions are very dull and include washing urinals in prison (I kid you not). Parts of the story make little sense: for example, Joe lets Vito take the fall on two different occassions, causing very detrimental consequences for Vito. Despite that, after coming out of prison, Vito still follows Joe's orders. Who in their right mind would still follow the person who left them in the cold repeatedly? Apparently Vito would! Characters, including the protagonist, are so bleak and easily forgotten that sometimes you forget why it was you had to do something.

Mission save points are a nightmare, as they are mainly before a big gun fight, but not also after the fight. As a result, if you happen to get killed right before ending the chapter, the game takes you all the way back before the fight. Other strange features include the police, who will tail you for some things (like speed), but not for others (like running red lights).

You will also note that on the PS3 version, swimming pools have no water in them, the grass texture is comparable to Mafia 1 and there is virtually no blood. It feels like you're shooting at straw dummies half the time. There is only one part of Mafia 2 that is remotely interesting, and that is the mission interjecting with Mafia 1.

There is also DLC content, entitled Betrayal of Jimmy and Jimmy's Vendetta, which are supposed to add more flesh to the game. I can only say that although it does add more fun to the game (first DLC is free for PS3 owners, but not subsequent ones), the fact that you have to cough up another $9.99 on top of the $59.99 for the game to make it more fun, does leave a bitter taste.

Overall, although it certainly had potential, Mafia 2 never cashed in on it. 1 out of 5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great beginning ... mediocre end, July 16 2010
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Red Dead Redemption (Video Game)
I purchased this game on release day, played it for about two weeks, and got tired of it. So bad in fact, I didn't even finish the game. I just returned it for max. credit some six weeks later. Here's why:

- riding on a horse in the wild may sound great, and be a totally amazing experience, but it starts to get really dull after the eigth or ninth hour of gameplay. Don't get me wrong, Rockstar did a fantastic job at authenticating the wild west: the scenery, wild animals, weather, roads, people, etc., but I just found myself really bored with it after a while - seeing the exact things over and over again.

- missions are non-repeating (for the most part), which is a great thing, but they're not enough to draw you in or make you feel as if you're really into the game.

- unless you're playing online with other people (i.e. joining/making a gang), the game will, as mentioned before, become very boring.

In the end, it's a love it or hate it type of game. Sadly, I can't say I really enjoyed RDR.

3.0 out of 5 stars An epiphany hits the DT gang!, July 12 2010
If you ever wondered why shows like "South Park" have been on for years, while "Drawn Together" could not make it past the third season, the Drawn Together Movie explains it all, apparently being hit by a realization of what they were doing 'wrong' in the past.

The DT Movie suggests that in order for an animated cartoon to make it nowadays, it must have some satirical spin on a social issue, which, are in great abundance on "South Park" and "the Simpsons" (at least at one point in the series).

So, the DT Movie makes light of Israel(?) -- a machine called I.S.R.A.E.L. is out to get the gang, which sometimes takes rest in the most unsuitable places, like the highway -- not sure if I would find that satirical or funny.

The DT gang were satirical on their own, among others a coward hero, a racist princess, and a gay video game antagonist. To take on social issues would have been not only difficult but awkward as well. In the end, the DT Movie should have stuck with what made the show great: craziness, vulgar, and hilarious fun -- without the satire.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not sufficient enough, May 11 2010
This review is from: Capitalism: A Love Story (DVD)
I will attempt to be brief. The point of the movie is:

- Corporations do nasty things to their employees to maximize profits;
- Former Goldman Sachs execs control Washington;
- Many people lost their homes in the recession.

That's pretty much what the movie says in 2 hours. It does not account for:

- Lehman Brothers as one of the main sources why people lost their homes;
- Unions creating/making harsher conditions for their employers, which caused corporate retaliation by moving their plants overseas;
- The necessary education required to run the financial system of a country.

There are many sides to what happened in U.S., however pointing the finger at only one group of people will not solve much.

I give it 1/5 because it portrays a very skewed/one version of the facts, often blaming "corporations and wall street execs" for the misfortunes of U.S.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's very pretty but..., Mar 28 2010
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: God of War III (Video Game)
God of War 3 is a very pretty game. However, if you're thinking to purchase it, you may want to be aware of the following:

1. Plot issue: the game starts with Kratos attempting along with the Titans, to reach and kill Zeus. For anybody who has not played GoW 1 and 2, this will be confusing. Why is Kratos trying to kill Zeus? The game tries to explain somewhat throughout the way, but doesn't do a good job. I am three quarters through the game, and I still don't understand why I killed the other gods or why I have to kill Zeus, other than the powers you get after killing them.

2. Hack & Slash/enemies issue: you will be doing a lot of button smashing. Enemies appear out of thin air (literally), you hack and slash them, and then they disappear. It is reminiscent of the old video games, where developers would purposely make your fallen enemies disappear so as to conserve memory space for the game. This shouldn't be an issue on a PS3 game.

3. Camera issue: yes, the game has gorgeous surroundings. The problem? The camera is fixed on Kratos (for most of the game), which does not allow you to appreciate the beautifully, well-designed surroundings. What's the point of having such great graphics, if you are limited in what you see?

4. Correct-sequence issue: when you fight large enemies and especially big-bosses you have to punch the correct sequence of buttons in order to defeat them. Although I would have wished to see how Kratos took down all those gods, my focus was always on the part of the screen directing me the correct button sequence.

5. Ads-for-other-Sony-games issue: I refer to the musical notes puzzle. The puzzle looks awfully alot like a Guitar Hero short song, Guitar Hero being another title from Sony. Some players have reported being able to plug in their guitars to get the puzzle, however it is not necessary. I was not too impressed with this move, to say the least.

Overall, I found there was way too much hype for this game. If you're a fan of the first two games and know/understand the plot, then you will forgive the issues and enjoy it well. If you're playing GoW for the first time, you will be well advised to keep in mind the above. Thanks for reading my criticism.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's more of the same thing, really..., Feb 28 2010
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: BioShock 2 (Video Game)
I base my review on the +6 hours I played this game over the weekend.

This is yet another PS3 game that people should seriously consider renting first, and then decide whether to purchase it. Here's why I didn't like Bioshock 2: it offers very little in terms of new material and content than Bioshock 1 had to offer:

- Same or similar plasmids as in Bioshock 1 - electrokinesis, incirenate, telekinesis;
- Same or similar leadhead splicers;
- Same upgrade system for the weapons;
- Similar upgrade system for plasmids;
- Same vending machine units for weapons, aid, etc.;
- Same or similar security bots;
- Same map system (tap 'select' button);
- Similar surroundings, yes you're back in Rapture, alright;

If you say, so what?, consider the difference between Unchartered 1 and Unchartered 2: the game missions, surroundings, foes, weapons and boss fights were as different as night and day.

The same, unfortunately, cannot be concluded about Bioshock 2. You're not playing a new chapter in Rapture, rather re-playing the same game, with some variations.
