1.0 out of 5 stars Castlevania in Name Only, Feb. 26 2012
If this game was titled Lords of Shadow without the Castlevania in it, I would have been quite pleased. However, for an old school fan of the franchise this game is an absolute travesty to the Castlevania franchise. It has done nothing but divide the Castlevania fan base.

Gone are the wonderfully eccentric musical stylings and driving beats of Michiru Yamane, and replaced by an absolutely generic 'Hollywood' movie score from some Spanish idiot. The art direction and style has moved towards a boring Lord of the Rings/D&D western look and away from the wonderfully imaginative Gustav Klimt-by-way-of-manga inspired work of Ayami Kojima. Castlevania was once well known for its extreme difficulty. Well, no one can accuse this game of that. Taking the lead from other game companies, by targeting a more general audience, the difficulty curve is set far below that of previous entries.

I am thankful for one thing about this game, and that this copycat of Devil May Cry and God of War is a reboot and has absolutely no connection to previous titles in the Castlevania franchise. I will keep this game but I'm going to Photoshop the Castlevania name off the cover and create a new one that says Lords of Shadow only. Hopefully, Konami will not sully the franchise any further by continuing to associate a possible sequel to this game with Castlevania.

For a fun romp, it is what it is. If you grew up on the older Castlevania titles Lords of Shadow is worth a play through, but do NOT go in thinking that you are playing a real Castlevania game because it isn't. For those who have never played a Castlevania game this is a perfect title for you since you will not have any preconceptions going in, and will not feel the utter disappointment and sheer devastation that true Castlevania fans have felt when they stuck this Western developed piece of crap in their console. Oh, and for those people that say, 'Hideo Kojima help make this game so it's real good.' All he did was consultation work on Gabriel's facial design and that was it.

David Cox can go suck my Cox for destroying this beloved franchise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, Nov. 26 2011
I was a little worried since a couple of the other reviews stated not receiving their order, however I did receive my game from Amazon along with Eternal Diva with absolutely no problems.

In terms of the game, well it has all the Layton goodness you have come to expect from the previous installments with some great new additions. Last Specter has more puzzles than ever before and Level-5 has been kind enough to add extra content in the form of a fully playable RPG called 'London Life'. That's two full games for the price of one. You cannot go wrong with this purchase.

This game is the start of a new trilogy and is a prequel to the first three games. I don't want to spoil anything but I would also like to add that the Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva movie takes place directly after the events of the Last Specter, so I really highly encourage anyone who is thinking of purchasing Professor Layton and the Last Specter to also consider picking up the movie.

All-in-all, it was wonderful and I am looking forward to seeing how this new trilogy plays out. Thank-you Level-5 for making such great games, and thanks to Amazon for delivering my most anticipated game of the year.
