2.0 out of 5 stars B as in Boring..., Oct. 21 2003
This review is from: Prague: A Novel (Paperback)
What a profound disappointment this book turned out to be! After waiting months for this book to finally be available at the library, I find myself endeavoring to pore through a narrative of dreary tedium....sad to say, this is one I will not finish....or should I say, can not finish because of its soporific effects.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointing Yawn........, July 26 2003
I was looking so forward to reading this BIG book by Stewart O'Nan..I think he is a wonderful story teller. However, I prefer his slim, elegant and minimalistic novels (almost novellas) to this big old book about nothing going on...just goes on and on and on and on and I am simply bored with it. I am disappointed...I think he bit off more than he could chew. The characters are lackluster, one dimensional and inspired nothing but apathy from me. Another one bites the dust....I am not finishing this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars only one good thing about this book, March 30 2002
the only good thing about this book is the title. very predictable ending and if the main character fell down one more time, i think i would have screamed. where was the editor for this book?

I went to the library and found this unassuming little book perched among the new releases...sounded good, took it home, opened it up and WOW!!! What a pleasant surprise...this is a very charismatic story...one of those rare books I could not put down...it's actually a pretty simple story of a woman with a terminal disease who reflects upon the circumstances of her life with lovely allegories of colors and glass and simple symbols. I highly recommend this uncomplicated yet poetic novel........

5.0 out of 5 stars a rare treasure, Feb. 28 2002
This review is from: The Officer's Ward (Hardcover)
every once in a while, a book pops up that really succeeds in almost every way imaginable...that is, capturing the imagination, feeling empathy with/for the characters and then simply getting so involved with the story that nothing else exists except the written word...The Officers'Ward is one of these jewels...the lovely thing about it is that it may be read in one sitting and even though the story is quite tragic, there is a certain slant of optimism that keeps the story alive. a simple, elegant story...i highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars rainy day reading, Feb. 26 2000
This review is from: Collectors: A Novel (Hardcover)
here's a good weekend novel; does not take a long time to read and captures your attention full-force. one knows something is going to happen and it will be something creepy so one's attention is never diverted by extraneous descriptions and gratuitous verbosity. the characters don't have much dimension (or physical description) but that somehow helps in the success of the suspense. i don't want to reveal anything about the circumstances of this novel; but i do want to suggest it as a good recreational read for those who enjoy a bit of suspense without a lot of violence.

after all the raves i heard about this book, i daresay i was abjectly disappointed. nobody had any real character; it was mainly as if everybody was described but not explored. i sincerely kept waiting for the action to erupt but everything just dribbled. a big yawn.
