4.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD of a not-so great movie, Mar 2 2004
The special effects of this monumental world event are stupendous. The fictionalized soap opera story of the three sexy young leads, however, is mind-numbing cliche that seems to last longer than the war itself. This is why "Scene Selection" was created!

Fortunately, history buffs will be able to enjoy the battle scenes and the wonderful Bonus Features including a "Making Of" special and a History Channel documentary.

However, if you really want the best of the Pearl Harbor movie experiences, check out TORA! TORA! TORA!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Poseidon Adventure on fire, but not as good...., Feb 28 2004
This review is from: Towering Inferno (DVD)
What made "Poseidon" so compelling was following a small band of characters in their struggle to survive a major disaster. This fiery follow up is overlong and pales in comparison--not only thrusting five times as many characters at us (does anyone really care if OJ Simpson saves a kitty cat?), so we don't care about them...it's just one flailing rag doll plunging to a pitiful death after another! There are also countless "Poseidon" rip offs throughout, proving that it doesn't always work the second time around. You'd think screenwriter Silliphant would have done more than just change some character names! (Robert Wagner "ran the 100 yard dash" much the same way Shelley Winters held a swimming record... Fred Astaire channels Jack Albertson with the addition of a bad toupee... Susan Flannery is dressed like Stella Stevens and suffers the same fate. Sheila (Mrs. Irwin) Allen turns up with a bigger role this time plus gets to survive! Carol Lynley must not have wanted to reprise her role as the willowy pop singer who croons the Oscar-winning best song, so Maureen McGovern dyed her hair blonde. There's Bobby Brady being even more obnoxious than Eric Shea's "Robin." It goes on and on. The DVD offers no exciting special features, although the picture quality of the film is excellent as are the action sequences directed by Allen.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Blue Lagoon" goes Renaissance, Feb 28 2004
This review is from: Lady Jane [Import] (DVD)
It's a shame that the interesting and relatively untapped story of Lady Jane got this sugary sweet treatment. It alternates between nubile pulp romance and engrossing costume drama. So when it's good, it's very good...and when it's corny, it's ridiculous (even the score is over the top). Excellent supporting cast. DVD offers no compelling special features...it would have been nice to have some extra Tudor treat in there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great quality version of a true classic!, Feb 24 2004
This review is from: Deliverance (DVD)
This DVD is a wonderful quality version of the classic suspense drama, DELIVERANCE. Everything about this feature film is perfect---the performances, the direction, the cinematography and the sheer elegance of the amazingly understated writing. Unfortunately, other than a trailer and short, dated "behind the scenes" featurette, there are no notable special features to enhance this magnificent movie. How could none of the stars make themselves available for a commentary track? Nonetheless, a definite must-have for your collection...this one never ceases to engross the viewer and sure beats the sanitized, chopped up version you'll catch on the tube.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, disappointing DVD...., Feb 21 2004
This review is from: Sixteen Candles [Import] (DVD)
This wonderful comedy is as much a slice of the 1980s as "Saturday Night Fever" is of the 1970s. It is still laugh-out-loud funny, especially for those of us who lived through that time period. Unfortunately, the DVD offers no special features that could really enhance the experience. A scene selection menu is hardly worth it! What about some of the music videos from the soundtrack or a commentary track from someone involved in the production? What a waste! Plus, there is also an inescapable commercial stuck on to the beginning, which stinks!

5.0 out of 5 stars M y favorite children's book...still stands up!, Feb 16 2004
This charmingly illustrated book was mine as a child of the 1960s and always stayed with me throughout my life. Happily, my mother held on to it and I still have it in my library. It's a magical and memorable book for all ages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing DVD version of Funny Flick, Feb 14 2004
This review is from: Sixteen Candles [Import] (DVD)
After countless viewings, this John Hughes modern classic is still laugh-out-loud hilarious. It's also a great time capsule for the styles of the 1980s. Unfortunately, the producers of the DVD version didn't capitalize on any of that and the almost non-existent Special Features are a serious disappointment. At least you will enjoy seeing the movie uncut!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Costume Drama with Boffo Blanchett!, Feb 14 2004
This review is from: Elizabeth (DVD)
As long as you don't rely on this to pass your English History exam, you will really enjoy this exquisite costume drama about the early reign of Elizabeth I. Beautiful, Oscar nomintaed Cate Blanchett is magnificent as the "Virgin Queen" and even Fiennes can be forgiven for resurrecting his "Shakespeare in Love" persona. The art direction, score, locations and supporting cast are all stellar, although one wonders what they must have paid Sir John Geilgud to be propped up for a handful of lines as the English-accented Pope--an uncalled for bit of stunt casting. "Bloody" Mary Tudor, as played by Kathy Burke, deserves a biopic all her own! Long live the Queen...

Ripley Under Water
Ripley Under Water
by Patricia Highsmith
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars This sequel's all wet...., Feb 11 2004
This review is from: Ripley Under Water (Paperback)
Fans of the Ripley series will find a few enjoyable moments, particularly in the characterizations of the well known characters of Tom, Mme Anette and Heloise. Otherwise, there is little suspense and even less ultimate payoff. Strangers to the Highsmith works will most likely be left completely non-plussed. This is a particularly dated and unclever work.

Orphans of the Storm

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Melodrama!, Feb 1 2004
This review is from: Orphans of the Storm (DVD)
D.W. Griffith's wonderful historical melodrama can keep viewers on the edge of their seats just as masterfully as it did nearly a century ago. The Gish sisters are spectacular, as are the supporting players, sets and costumes. Too bad the DVD version offers no additional features, but at least the movie itself will provide 2 hours of delicious melodrama.
