Can I Give This Away???, Mar 14 2013
I bought this despite the poor reviews. Should have paid more attention to them. This is not a very good production. The story has the potential to be absolutely great but I'm not sure what went wrong here, was it the direction, was it the acting? I just don't know. It seemed all very disjointed to me. The first part is very amatuerish with the heroine running around acting more like a child than an adult. Perhaps that how she was in real life but it just came across badly for me. Tom Wilkinson, who is normally fabulous, played a very minor role and quite an insignificant one. The ending is disturbing considering it actually happened. I don't think our justice system today would have played out quite like that but shows how severe justice was in that era and how it seems from the way this movie tells it, they got it wrong. If you can get this movie for next to nothing it is worth watching but it you have to pay what I paid for it, then don't bother. It isn't very good at all. Too bad really.

Very Good, Jan 12 2013
Great little pocket guide with some good tips and lots of information. Good size for carrying around and a good fold out map in the back. Can't go wrong with Rick Steves!

A Good Rendition of Madam Bovary, Jan 12 2013
I enjoyed this movie. I thought Hugh Bonnieville was his usual great self despite the somewhat pathetic role the story calls for. Francis O'Connor was very good but I would have liked her to have grown a little harder in looks as her character developed from the innocent nun she starts out as and develops into a confused promiscuious woman. Other than that I thought it was good. Another super production from BBC!

Time Waster and Sappy, Jan 12 2013
I have to disagree with the other reviewers on this book. Perhaps I shouldn't be writing a review as I didn't finish it. I found it uninteresting and a waste of time when there are so many other amazing books out there. I found the writing very immature. Was this book written for a teenage market? I found it quite juvenile and unbelievable. Who puts mementos in a tin box and buries them for years and years? I know it is only a story but I like more believable stories than this. I also like more in depth writing. This is the first book I have attempted to read of Karen White and I won't try another one. I gave it two stars because I might be judging it unfairly since I didn't finish the book. I could pretty much tell how the story line was going to play out which kind of takes away from the incentive to continue reading. If it had continued on as boring as what I read, I would have given it one star. Perhaps I am not very poetic but I found the line on page 36 "It was what I imagined I'd feel if I looked up into the sun to find the answers and found only blindness"....kinda stupid??? Then another line from the same page "Lillian Harrington had fizzled, then gone flat like a Coke left open too long"....I thought that was a juvenile analogy.

Takes you to Another World, Dec 28 2012
I vowed I would not watch another Lark Rise to Candleford after the first one, but I did. The second is similar to the first one. It is a series that kind of grows on you. It isn't of the real world at all and if you feel like a little escapism it certainly does the trick, right down to the music. It could be called a Soap Opera circa 1850. I get a chuckle out of the fact that it is always summer and even when Christmas is approaching the characters have warmer clothes on but the trees still have lots of leaves on them and the sky is bright. It rarely rains in Lark Rise or Candleford and considering this is in England, you know it is a bit of a fairy story. All very entertaining though!

More of the Same, Dec 28 2012
Land Girls is entertaining but not very accurate for the times. It keeps you interested but is more along the soap opera line than the way things were for these women in reality. As long as you keep that in mind, you will find the series enjoyable. It is a "fluffy" kind of work, with not much substance.

Good story, Dec 28 2012
I really liked Body and Soul. It is an older dvd, from the early 1990's, but very well done. It must have been one Kristen Scott Thomas's first movies. The acting was very good and it was quite enlightening re the environment of the 1950's in a nunnery. It isn't much of an action film but certainly keeps you interested. The main character is a nun for about 16 years when a family crises forces her to visit her home and while she returns to the nunnery, her life will never be the same, and the event changes the course of the movie. I would recommend it if you live Brit productions.

Very good, Dec 28 2012
Enjoyed this dvd a lot. Told me a lot about Disraeli I didn't know and embellished some of the things I did know. While it is an older dvd, it was still entertaining and informative.

Enlightening, Dec 28 2012
I read this book because I had been hearing a lot recently about the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. I had watched the movie The Way and thought, maybe, just maybe, I could attempt such walk even at my advanced age! This book was incredibly enlightening. The walk is obviously not for the faint of heart or certainly the elderly. The movie made it look like a walk in the park, this book I am presuming tells it like it really is, a very difficult walk. I enjoyed the way it was written and the experiences and encounters the author had with others. She is very entertaining. I didn't find her whiney at all, I thought she was very stoic and I would have left the other women behind as well with all their little cliques and infantile ways. I kept thinking while reading that she probably would not complete the walk because she repeatedly kept threatening to quit.Kudos to her that that she did. Why I gave this book only three stars is because I felt very let down at the end regarding the English man she met. The odd relationship was never explained satisfactorily at all and leaves the reader hanging. I understand perhaps his situation was very personal and he didn't want information disclosed but it would have been better to have left him out of the storyline completely or mentioned him vaguely as if he was just yet another of her encounters enroute thus confirming the psychic's prediction. The hotel room experience she relates I found very odd.I came to the conclusion that not many make this walk as your typical "pilgrimage" but everyone seems to end it with some sort of positive enlightenment. It's a good book which thoroughly convinced me I should have done the walk twenty years ago!

Love Hawaii - Love this movie, Aug 17 2012
Excellent movie. It explains a lot about how the land in Hawaii is being sold off to developers and how one family who has owned a large parcel of land is being pressured into selling. Along with this story line is the story of the main character and how his wife is tragically killed in an accident and consequently how her life prior to her death is exposed. Very good movie. The music is marvelous and so appropriate. You will especially enjoy this movie if you know Hawaii!
