5.0 out of 5 stars This Album Continues to Amaze Me, Jun 14 2013
Each Beatles record was an advance and a revelation of some sort. Each album introduced something creative and new. Sgt. Pepper, however, rose above the rest. It represented a quantum leap beyond what had gone before, beginning with the cover. It was an explosion of imagery and artistry and innovation from beginning to end. (That might not be apparent now, over 40 years later, as the innovative techniques which the Beatles inspired and pioneered have become commonplace.) The lyrics, the tunes, the voices, the harmonies, the instruments, the orchestrations and the technical wizardry of George Martin all conspired to reflect the spirit of the time. This might be best embodied in the aural perfection of the closing "A Day in the Life." The album continues to amaze me. When you buy Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, as you should, turn down the lights, turn up the sound, and just listen. It's a trip!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beatles! Beatles! Beatles!, May 30 2013
This review is from: 1 (Audio CD)
What more needs to be said? Twenty-seven number 1 hits with 79+1/4 minutes of music on a single CD, and in chronological order, as they should be. The packaging includes a great booklet with close to no text -- a one-page introduction by George Martin and a page of recording credits -- but beautiful reproductions of 45 rpm (single) record sleeves. It even includes the wonderful Richard Avedon photos. It's exciting, it's exhilarating and it brings back a lifetime of memories. As others have commented, it only includes A sides and no B sides. Penny Lane without Strawberry Fields? Hey Jude without Revolution? Well, I suppose that some compromises needed to be made to fit as much music on the CD as is there. If you don't already have this then get it and learn to live.

1.0 out of 5 stars I will look for a better book, May 17 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book because it is recommended for a local university course on publishing. However, I opened the book randomly and found the heading "Subjects, Objects, and Complements". If the author of a book on grammar doesn't even know how to use commas then I am not going to trust the rest of the book. I will keep looking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Evocative, May 8 2013
This review is from: Abba - Greatest Hits (LP Record)
I first heard ABBA, and heard of ABBA, during the spring of 1974 when Waterloo became a hit in North America. I next heard of, and from, them in December of 1976 when Fernando became a hit. I was surprised, then, when that was followed up by a Greatest Hits album. After two hit songs? Of course, by the time they had recorded Waterloo they had been performing and recording for a couple of years in Europe, and they had hits in Europe between Waterloo and Fernando. This is a collection of their early pre-Dancing Queen hits. I bought the LP version of Greatest Hits when it first appeared, and back then I thought that it was great. I still have it. I just received a new, unused CD copy, which I paid a king's ransom for, and it still sounds great. I just had to have it!

As well as serving as a collection of wonderful songs, it brings back a lot of memories of a time and of people and of places from when I was much younger and in my formative years - when I was developing ideas and ideals with which I am still working and to which I am still devoted. To me it is joyous and inspiring.

If you want to buy a copy I certainly wouldn't discourage you. Used copies are available at reasonable prices. However, if you want a new, unused CD copy then, like me, you will pay a pretty price for it. If you don't mind a slightly different version, with songs in a different order and Hasta Manana included, you might want to check out "ABBA's Greatest Hits: 30th Anniversary [Import, Limited Edition]". I may need to get that one, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, April 9 2013
I have been using electric toothbrushes, beginning with a much more expensive Philips Sonicare toothbrush, for several years. After I broke two of the Sonicare toothbrushes (probably by pressing too hard on them), I bought the Vitality because it was the cheapest electric toothbrush around. To my surprise, I found that it works much better than the Sonicare did. The Oral-B Vitality has a small round brush which can get into hard-to-reach areas and to hard-to-reach surfaces that the large brush on the Sonicare couldn't. Also, the circular motion of the Oral-B Vitality works and cleans much better than the back-and-forth motion of the Sonicare brush. After I switched to the Oral-B Vitality my dentist was surprised at how clean my teeth were! You can get Oral-B electric toothbrushes with wide a range of features and at a wide range of prices, but I found that the low-cost Vitality serves me well. The batteries of cordless electric toothbrushes eventually wear out (after several years, depending on use), but replacement of the low-priced Vitality is affordable.

I have also used several different toothbrush heads with the Vitality, but the Floss Action brush is by far my favourite. It's unique design does, indeed, give it the superior cleaning action that the packaging says it does, and it cleans my teeth better than other toothbrush heads do. I highly recommend this toothbrush & brush-head combination.

Ronnie Milsap Live (Audio Cassette)

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare recording that still sounds great, Mar 21 2013
In 1980 I bought this album which was recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and released in 1976. It sounded great then and it still sounds great now. With a great song list and great performances it could almost be a "Greatest Hits" record. (Is that too many "greats"?) Ronnie Milsap is in fine voice and good humour here. In addition to some nice banter between songs, it includes:

1. Pure Love
2. Medley of: I Hate You / The Girl Who Waits on Tables
3. Medley of: (I'm a) Stand By My Woman Man / What Goes On When The Sun Goes Down / Daydreams About Night Things
4. Busy Makin' Plans
5. Kaw-liga
6. Country Cookin'
7. I Can Almost See Houston From Here
8. (After Sweet Memories) Play Born To Lose Again
9. Music Style Medley of: Daydreams About Night Things / Cattle Call
10. Let My Love Be Your Pillow
11. (I'd Be) A Legend In My Time
12. Honky Tonk Woman

I have been hoping that RCA would have the wisdom to put this out on CD, but it hasn't happened yet. So, I strongly recommend that if you find this in any format then snatch it up. If not, then write Sony and ask for its release on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calm, Soothing and Serene, Mar 14 2013
I was given this as a gift many years ago, and it remains a favorite. It makes wonderful background music to work by and even to go to sleep by. I try not to mix those purposes! The sound is gentle, even, solo acoustic guitar without too much flare, voices to distract, or crashing drums or blaring horns. It is a perfect disc to think by, to relax by, or both.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Story of a Landmark Legal Case, Feb 24 2013
This review is from: Gideon's Trumpet (Paperback)
Gideon's Trumpet is a well-written book about justice and injustice in the United States. It discusses how and why Clarence Earl Gideon, an indigent prisoner in Florida, challenged the terms of his trial and imprisonment, appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and won the right to legal representation in criminal cases for all citizens. This was a major step forward for the country and is an important story for people to be familiar with after several decades of the eroding of legal rights. It is notable not only for telling Gideon's own story, but for the insights that it gives us into the state of law in Florida and the operation and deliberations of the Supreme Court at the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, But Not Quite My Favorite, Feb 22 2013
I have been using the Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrush for about six years now, and when I bought my toothbrush this was the standard brush head that came in the package. Since then I have used several different toothbrush heads with it. I found that this does a very good job of cleaning my teeth, but not quite as good a job as the Floss Action brush. This one doesn't seem to do quite as good a job as getting into all of the corners and cleaning all of the stain and plaque. While not my favorite it does come in as a close second.
