Prayers For Rain

5.0 out of 5 stars Prayers for More, Sept. 19 2000
This review is from: Prayers For Rain (Hardcover)
Before you read this book and enjoy the story, the plot, the language, and the characters; make sure you also read the first four books in the series. All of them including the latest book "Prayers for Rain" are absolute top-class - intelligent, witty, and hard-boiled - all at once. I keep the books by Lehane on the same shelf as the books by Raymond Chandler and Michael Connelly.

The words makes you feel like if you were there yourself inside the book. I keep the books by Lehane on the same shelf as the books by Raymond Chandler and Michael Connelly.

The Standoff
The Standoff
by Chuck Hogan
Edition: Paperback
37 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book and form your own opinion, Sept. 8 2000
This review is from: The Standoff (Paperback)
If Hammond Innes (e.g. "Campbell's kingdom") and Donald Harstad (e.g. "Eleven Days") had written a book together; this book could have been the result of their effort. Chuck Hogan's novel mixes police procedural with a high-tension drama up in the remote mountains of Montana. The main character FBI Special Agent John Banish is not only trying to save the innocent people taken as hostage, he must also handle the local police and population as well as trying to come to terms with himself and the tragic events of his past. This is a book that you remember afterwards and it is good enough to read a second time.

Emerald Flash
Emerald Flash

Edition: Mass Market Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but the two former books were better, Sept. 3 2000
Emerald Flash is a recommended read. Make sure you first read the first two books in the series, since there are a lot of references to these in this third book. Out of the three books I think Sand Dollar is the best one. If you like these books you will problaby also like the books by Richard Barre, Steve Hamilton, and William Kent Kreuger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story, Sept. 3 2000
This review is from: Fatherland (Mass Market Paperback)
Well written police novel of what could have been a chilling reality of a Europe after a German WW2 victory. If you like this book you should also read "SS-GB" by Len Deighton, which is a police novel set in a German occupied London after winning the battle of Britain.

Galactic Bounty
Galactic Bounty
by William Dietz
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
24 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard-boiled space opera at its best, Sept. 3 2000
The McCade series of 1. "Galactic Bounty" (earlier published as "War world"), 2. "Imperial bounty", 3. Alien bounty", and 4. "McCade's bounty"; presents a completely new kind of science fiction character in Sam McCade. McCade is the bounty hunter within the terran empire that finds himself in the center of intergalactic politics and conflicts where his past military career in the terran fleet catches up with him. Hard-boiled and impossible to corrupt; McCade is facing adventures, together with his two odd friends Rico and Phil, that could be described as a unique mix of a wild west novel set in a military science fiction world with a flavor of Jack Vance and Robert Henlein. You will not be disappointed. Try also his other novels in the "legion" series.

The Cobra Event

5.0 out of 5 stars A very exciting and entertaining novel, Sept. 2 2000
I normally avoid these novels where some kind of plague or ebola-like viruses threatens to wipe out humanity, but I found this one to be extremely well written and interesting to read. I'm now going to order "Hot Zone" from the same author to see if that can cure me, but I'm afraid that Richard Preston is too contagious...

Where Eagles Dare
Where Eagles Dare
by Alistair Maclean
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
14 used & new from CDN$ 0.01

5.0 out of 5 stars How often do you read the same book twice or more?, Sept. 2 2000
I seldom read the same book more than once, but the books by MacLean are an exception from that rule. You can have them in the shelf for years and every now and when you dust your books you will start to look at one of them. Before you know it you have finished of three or four of them. I can't recall any other author having the same effect on me. Today I just finished "The dark crusader" after reading "When eight bells toll"... I think I've read those two books three times by now. The MacLean books I rank to be among his very best are; "Where Eagles Dare", "Fear is the key", Ice station Zebra", "H.M.S. Ulysses", Circus", "The last frontier", "The golden rendevouz", "The satan bug", "The guns of Navarone", and "Puppet on a chain". The following books are also worth while reading: "Force 10 from Navarone", When Eight bells toll", "Night without end", South by Java Head", "Bear Island", "The dark crusader". Alistair MacLean mixes suspense, spy stories, heroism, plots, characters of good and evil, and humour like noone else. Thinking about it, its obvious why I keep coming back for the same books over and over again. If you buy and read them; you will agree with me. If you already have them; you know what I mean. Let me end this review by saying; Thank you, Alistair MacLean for having written so many good books! Finally; if you like Alistair MacLean you will also like the books of Desmond Bagley, the earlier books by Jack Higgins, and Dennis Lehane.
