2.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst season..., Feb 11 2008
This review is from: Sliders: The Third Season (DVD)
Sliders was a great series, it was a smart sci-fi show about parallel worlds that was brainy, yet entertaining. Until the third season came around. Network interference turned what was a cool show into a hackneyed Hollywood-block-buster-rip-off farce of epic proportions.

The first part of the season is entertaining, but things get bad about halfway through. As I said, the series was hijacked by the network who wanted to boost raitings by adding sex appeal (Firing John Ryse-Davies and hiring Keri Wuher) and making every episode essentially a rip-off of a popular movie that was released in theaters that year (check it out, there are rip offs of Species, Jurassic Park, Anaconda, and the Island of Dr. Moreau among others)

But, even though some episodes are just embarrassingly bad (Dragonslide for example) it's still watchable, but if you're looking for the same sort of stuff that was in the series first and second seasons you're going to be sorely disappointed.

I'd strongly recommend this box set (which Universal Pictures went very cheap on it with the lack of booklets, episode/chapter breakdowns, double sided discs and minimal special features.. in spite 30+ Dollar price tag) for a completest or somebody who isn't too concerned about where the plot was going and just wants to be entertained.

If you're looking for the series to get back to it's roots, check out Season 4, which at the time of this writing will be released March 25, 2008. That season was aired on a new network with the old writers. They still have an actual on-going plot (With the Kromags) but they also get back to "basics" with the exploration of parallel worlds and so on.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best release of this film to date., Nov 27 2006
This is the third release of Transformers: The Movie on DVD, and it is the best that there is to find.

The original DVD release from Séville pictures, and it's successor released by Rhino Home Video have nothing on this.

First and foremost: This edition is released by Sony, so you know they weren't scrimping on the reproduction of the film. It's a high quality transfer, great sound.

If you're going to shell out money on a Transformers: The Movie DVD, this is the one to get. However, there are a few things you should know about it:

1.) The "bonus footage and deleted scenes" are a small collection of clips, mostly test shots and unfinished scenes, and they show the promotional trailer of the film which features alternate versions of a few scenes, and ones that were cut out of the film. However, you've got the captions over top of everything and a commentary track you can't turn off.

2.) The presentation of Scramble City, additionally has a commentary track you can't turn off, so the original Japanese audio is lost, and you've got some guy from the Transformers Collectors Club and one of the anal-retentive G-1 purists from www.tfw2005.com going on about the difference between Japanese and American Transformers (with obvious contempt and/or disdain.) Additionally there are no English subtitles. So if you want to watch a Transformers episode dubbed over by two guys who's opinions you don't care about explaining to you what's going on, on the screen, then this is for you. As for myself, I would have preferred if they kept the original audio track and had subtitles in English. That would have been a nice touch.

3.) This is more for the sake of humor than a complaint or observation, but all of the old Transformers toy commercials are of poor quality (In fact, you can find better quality versions of them online if you look hard enough) and they also blurred out the faces of live people in the commercials (for obvious legal reasons, it's funny to watch) it's also funny watching the Japanese versions of these commercials that were just dubs of the American toy commercials.

4.) The story board pictures are the same ones featured in the Rhino release.

Other than that, I would have to say the bonus features aren't really that exciting, or interesting, or worth the hype. If you're going to buy this 20th Anniversary edition, buy it for the GREAT quality version of the movie. Otherwise your going to be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you Ready for some Football?, Jan 21 2006
This review is from: Laserblast (Widescreen) (DVD)
Oh Laserblast... Such a bad film, yet oh so good. You're like a guilty pleasure for someone trying to lose weight.

How can you say no to a movie that has Rodney McDowell, Eddie Deezen, a laser gun from space, and claymation aliens created by Jon Berg?

A must for those who like low budget sci-fi

5.0 out of 5 stars An instant Classic, Jan 21 2006
So what do we have here?:

- An incompetent scientist searching for a monster.

- Said monster is an Incredible melting man, who "Get's strong all the time" (How one get's stronger as they are simultaniously losing mass is never really explained.)

- Annoying cutsie 70's children smoking

- A nude scene that moves the plot along (And not a very exciting one to boot.)

- Old people stealing lemons.

And oh so much more! The Incredible Melting Man has a special place in my heart, it's a bad movie, but it's so bad it is enjoyable. Often goofy, often cheesie, often incompetent.

Watch out for the scene at the beginning of the film where the fat nurse runs through the glass door! It's pricesless.

I hope that they put this classic jem back in print, or the wonderful people at Rhino home video release the MST3K version in the not to distant future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, Fun little movie!, Aug 23 2005
In spite of all it's misgivings, MST3K: The Movie is pretty funny, and if you are a MSTie who has always wanted to hear Tom Servo swear, well this is your movie. A few downsides to the film is that the folks at Universal told the MST3K boys that they had to pick one of their movies (obviously) but it couldn't have been a "bad" movie (What the hell? That's the whole point. Movie execs.. I'll never get them.) and while it is shorter than your average MST3K episode (And runs shorter the original version of "This Island Earth" which is the movie the boys riff) it's still an entertaining watch.
Be farwarned though, the movie has been out of print for quite some time and there are certain people out there in internet land who will try and gouge you 100 bucks and upwards for it (as of the time of this writing some knuckle knob is charging 415 bucks for a USED copy.. OBSURD!) I recomend you check EVERYWHERE before you finally open up your wallet.

I managed to find it online for a fairly decent price. Keep your eye out, and if all else fails and your not picky about VHS, get it on VHS as most dealers and getting rid of VHS like the plague.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boasted as the "real sequel", Mar 5 2004
So it said on the promo reel (which was never released) about this Texas Chainsaw flic by the story writer of the original (Kim Henkel). If you ask me that sounds a little bitter.

Really, if your into a movie full of excessive violence at the expense of plot (Hey aren't we all?) Then pick this film up. It's not much for anything else.

I think the only thing this movie had going for it is:
1.) Renee Zelwegger getting brutalized constantly
and
2.) Mathew McConaughey getting hit in the face with an airplane prepeller.

Other than that, it doesn't have much else... No wait!! It also stars Robert Jacks! Who we all remember played the club owner in that movie Slacker....... Okay okay, I pulled that IMDB.. But still.. ROBERT JACKS!!
