2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but disappointing and unsatisfying, Jan 9 2004
This review is from: Palladio (Paperback)
I loved the premise of the book, the idea of creating serious art without using irony, but it really didn't feel like this book was ultimately about that. It was really more of this love story between a character I really liked (John) and a character I initially liked (Molly) but who became more thoughtless, unreasonable and selfish as the book wore on.

I was very dissatisfied by the end. Nothing changed with most characters, which was infuriating after all the havoc they wreaked on other people's lives, and the one character I did like seemed to have lost virtually everything. I never could understand what in the world was wrong with the Howe family, particularly what would drive both kids to never speak with their family members again. I don't feel like I understood who anyone in that family really was. And I didn't understand what on earth that message gibberish interspersed at the end was. Worse, I didn't even care anymore.

Holler If You Hear Me: Searching For Tupac Shakur
Holler If You Hear Me: Searching For Tupac Shakur

2.0 out of 5 stars title misleading, Jun 9 2003
The author offers some insight into cultural issues, but for the most part, this is a very disappointing book that doesn't bring you any closer to understanding Tupac or the choices he made. Both the intended audience and the style of this book are very confused as well - it offers too little insight to be a biography, but is too focused on one individual to be cultural criticism; it's too academic in some ways, and too much like a magazine article in others.

I also echo previous viewers' issues with the author's vocabulary. It's often uncomfortable (like someone is trying too hard to impress you) or completely confounding, such as comparing Tupac's lyrics to 'the ethical poverty of romantic nationalism'. What in the world does that mean, and what does it have to do with Tupac Shakur?

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, May 11 2003
A stunning, ruthless indictment of crass materialism and American disregard for the traditions and values of other countries. It's hard to believe this was written before WW1.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and overwritten, April 14 2003
This review is from: Tourmaline: A Novel (Hardcover)
The kind of book that frequently uses Italian or French phrases and never translates them for you. Also, the author apparently assumes you have an intimate knowledge of the geography of Elba before reading the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Greed, ambition and the cult of celebrity, Jan 14 2003
This review is from: Giants and Toys (DVD)
Like the candy companies in the film that aren't really so sweet, this is a great film that deceptively appears to be fun, but becomes quite a serious examination of greed, celebrity and the rat race. It was made in 1958, but could have been made today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film if you can get past..., Jan 14 2003
the fact that a kidnapped woman thrown into the trunk of a car with a recently-escaped ex-con who is completely unknown to her could never, ever, under any circumstances find the situation a turn-on, even if the ex-con looks like George Clooney. If you can suspend that disbelief, it's an awesome movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so Golden, Nov 25 2001
This review is from: NEW Golden Bowl (DVD) (DVD)
I agree with the reviewer from Cambridge, MA. The only actor I had a problem with was Uma Thurman, who carried no weight or presence in her role. I didn't know who she was or how I was supposed to feel about her, yet the crux of the movie rested on her shoulders. As a result, the movie seemed tepid and dull.

5.0 out of 5 stars lydon, cook, jones, Jan 16 2001
I can't say this is the best rock and roll documentary ever made because I couldn't care less about the music of most other bands, let alone watch a happy little movie about how they became the celebrated, mediocre band they are. I can say this is a touching, hilarious, inspiring, fascinating film about some very young men, their music, their fashion and the social upheaval they caused just by saying what they believed.

Julien Temple does a great job with the movie itself, giving the Pistols a strong sense of context for the American viewer, but his commentary on the DVD leaves something to be desired. Someone should have told him that this isn't an interview, but a chance for him to comment on the images in front of him.

1.0 out of 5 stars one of the worst movies ever made, Jan 15 2001
This review is from: Leaving Las Vegas (VHS Tape)
It's called character development, Mr. Figgis. If you can take a few mins to show Nicolas Cage was a film industry exec who's lost his family, then surely you can take 2 mins to explain why Elisabeth Shue is a hooker with perfect grammar and huge bookshelves in her apt. Female characters aren't just sympathy and sex machines that exist only to listen to the male characters whine throughout the movie. Why can't we give less than 1 star on amazon.com?

Alluring and lovely novel. It's an emotional story told with reserve and a light, precise touch.
