5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Novels About Army Life Before World War II., Nov. 3 2003
This review is from: From Here to Eternity (Paperback)
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY is an American classic and one of the very best novels about army life before World War II. It is obvious that the author knows his subject and one of the strengths of the book is his ability to describe army life so realistically. The story is also greatly enhanced by some of the most believable and interesting characters you will ever meet in fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fairly Good History Lesson, Aug. 25 2003
This review is from: Midway (VHS Tape)
MIDWAY moves a little faster than TORA,TORA,TORA and is only slightly shorter. It will be entertaining for those who are interested in World War II and the crucial Battle of Midway which is really more of an air battle than a good old-fashioned naval battle. The strong cast is led by Henry Fonda and Charlton Heston and includes James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Robert Mitchum, Toshire Mifune and James Shigeta.
MIDWAY failed to receive any Oscar nominations in 1978 when the Academy Award competition was dominated by ROCKY and NETWORK

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine Performances By Stewart and O'Hara, Aug. 7 2003
THE RARE BREED is a film about the delivery of a white-faced Hereford bull from England to the Texas range for breeding purposes. The man responsible for the task is James Stewart. The women who own the bull are Maureen O'Hara and her daughter played by Juliet Mills. THE RARE BREED is a fairly good Western with strong performances by Stewart and O'Hara. A fine supporting cast includes Brian Keith, Don Galloway and David Brian.
Andrew V. McLaglen directed many other good movies such as MCLINTOCK and SHENANDOAH.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made For Each Other, Aug. 7 2003
This review is from: Macao (VHS Tape)
MACAO is a fairly entertaining story of crime and adventure in the Portuguese colony near Hong Kong after World War II. Jane Russell is a singer working for a local gambling boss (Brad Dexter). Robert Mitchum is an American who is on the run and William Bendix is pretending to be a salesman but he really has another more mysterious identity. The best thing about MACAO is the pairing of Russell and Mitchum who seem to be made for each other.
Josef von Sternberg also directed THE BLUE ANGEL.

4.0 out of 5 stars Framed By Crooked Politicians, July 25 2003
EACH DAWN I DIE is a movie about a reporter who is framed for manslaughter by crooked politicians and sent to prison where he befriends a hardened criminal. Most of the story takes place in prison as the reporter slowly turns into an embittered inmate. James Cagney stars as the reporter and George Raft plays the part of his prison buddy. The strong supporting cast includes Jane Bryan, George Bancroft, Victor Jury and Maxie Rosenbloom.
Director William Keighley also directed THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER and THE FIGHTING 69th.

The Da Vinci Code: A Novel

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Waste, July 23 2003
THE DA VINCI CODE starts out as a murder mystery and then slowly evolves into a search for the Holy Grail. It reminds me in some ways of Hammett's MALTESE FALCON. The big difference is that THE DA VINCI CODE contains too much waste and is sadly lacking in stimulating characters and memorable dialogue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Expect Any Bombshells, July 18 2003
This review is from: Living History (Hardcover)
I really don't understand why there are so many complaints about this book. It's about what I expect from a woman in her position. She mentions Vince Foster and Paula Jones frequently and gives her own version of events. At the same time she damns Dick Morris with faint praise.
LIVING HISTORY is thick enough to be considered a legitimate book. It is also padded with numerous photos which will please Hillary's fans. The one thing you won't find is any bombshells.

4.0 out of 5 stars Defending Joe McCarthy Is A Waste Of Time, July 15 2003
Ann Coulter makes some good points in TREASON. I wish, however, that less space was devoted to a defense of Joe McCarthy.
If the author eliminated the personal attacks on some of her enemies, the book would then have more credibility - but of course it would not be quite so entertaining. On balance TREASON was definitely a worthwhile reading experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Science Fiction Film For Its Time, July 7 2003
This review is from: Invisible Man (VHS Tape)
THE INVISIBLE MAN can be an enjoyable movie - particularly if you don't take it too seriously. By the standards of the early 1930's the special effects are good enough and the acting by Claude Rains as the invisible man is superb.
The story by H.G. Wells about a scientist who develops a method of becoming invisible and then gradually goes insane is unique. Local police who try to capture the invisible man provide much slapstick humor.
Gloria Stuart who played the girl friend of the invisible man also acted in REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM and THE THREE MUSKETEERS in the 1930's as well as TITANIC and THE LOVE LETTER in the 1990's. Director James Whale directed FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN in the 1930's.

Joseph Campbell Companion

5.0 out of 5 stars The Divine Lives Within You, July 4 2003
It is helpful if the reader already has an appreciation for the author's breadth and depth of understanding of mythology before beginning A JOSEPH CAMPBELL COMPANION. It is particularly useful if one is familiar with Campbell's belief that certain mythic motifs are found in virtually all of the world's traditions.
Much of A JOSEPH CAMPBELL COMPANION is written in the easy conversational style of the author . It is highly readable and relies very little on scholarly jargon.
The parts of the book I find most interesting are those pages devoted to a discussion of Buddhism and the relevance of some of its teachings for all of us.
